At least, he thought he did. He just didn’t know what kind of love.
He never knew what Rose he would receive from her. Maybe one with soft and silk petals or sharp thorns on a stem. She was a ball of energy and no one wanted to get on her bad side. She also had her moments of compassion. A side of her he experienced the most. He didn’t know it at first, but she understood him better than others. As if it were a special talent she tapped in over the past decades.
Does this mean their friendship changed? Could be. Again, he wasn't sure. The more time she went on her own, the closer he wanted to be with her. The more she left, the quicker he wanted her back. It was weird. As a child, she’d join him on his adventures, but now, he wanted to join hers.
But the moments they’d spent together had shrunk over time. Though her patience with him never faltered. Her love never faltered.
Initially, romance wasn’t his thing. He couldn’t have guessed when he’d started to attain these feelings, but romance felt too far-fetched. His sentiment of love could be described in one word. Slow.
It was like a heavy weight on his back. It could explain why his running lagged whenever she'd chase after him. Or was it her undying persistence and strength? Heck, he might've wanted her to catch up for all he knew. Either way, he'd usually conclude with “friendship is easier” and leave it there. But being friends didn’t satisfy him anymore. Romance sounded too cheesy but friendship felt dishonest.
To reiterate, it was weird.
The fastest thing alive isn’t able to figure out which road to run on. He always ran but never went anywhere. So much for living up to his title. He wasn’t the type to overthink, but his ever-growing heart for her became undeniable. With her around, how could he not overthink?
How she hugged him. How he hugged back. How frequently he'd think about her. How awkward their short-lived greetings became. It all rushed through his head like a missile being fired.
Why was he thinking about this now?
What was happening to him?
How long had he felt this way?
Luckily, the questions became durable after a while. He didn't remember what day it was, but she told him something he'd never forget.
“You just keep being yourself and leave the waiting to me.”
From then on, his thoughts on how he loved her became certain. However, it didn’t matter. Regardless, his rose was loved.
