The older i get the more i understand why some people become obsessed with privacy, not because they’re hiding something, but because being constantly perceived starts to feel spiritually exhausting.
Did you know that soda machines at restaurants and movie theaters spy on you? That most common new cars now record your sexual preferences and send it to the manufacturer (and also data about anyone who also gets in your car, walks by your car, and maybe happens to be within visual range of your car)? That grocery stores are trying to force customers to download an app to scan barcodes on shelves instead of putting up prices, so the app can scan the phone, decide how much that customer should be squeezed for, and adjust the price? That more and more innocent people are being sent to jail for crimes committed hundreds of miles away because an AI facial recognition algorithm spit their faces out and the cops didn't bother to do the most basic of checks?
I am not uptight about privacy because I'm hiding something. I'm uptight about it because the people who dismiss my right to privacy are dangerous to you and me and our families, personally, all the time.
And often, they are assholes, too.
i think we should be talking about the semi-recent advancements in cystic fibrosis treatment like all the time every day. there hasn’t been a drug like this since AZT medications for HIV infection it is truly fucking miraculous and very important
basically: cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease which makes the mucous a person generates extra sticky. it used to kill people in infancy, then with advancements in medical tech it killed people in young childhood, and until very recently cystic fibrosis patients could expect to live until about thirty years old with consistent painful lung infections and complications.
in 2019 the FDA approved a drug called trikafta (which is really three drugs in one) for cystic fibrosis treatment. what it essentially does is patch up the malfunctioning proteins that cause the extra sticky mucus. trikafta is effective on about 90% of cystic fibrosis patients.
people who had spent their entire lives in and out of hospitals, on and off of ventilators, suffering from pneumonia and sometimes treated through painful procedures like intubation took this drug, got out of bed, coughed up an entire lifetimes worth of mucus out of their lungs over the course of a few hours, breathed clearly for perhaps the first time in their lives, and now go on to live well into their seventies.
like isn’t that insane. isn’t that amazing. doesn’t that give you hope for the future of medical advancements and treatment. fuck. i think about it all the time……

Additionally, it should be noted that metrics like life expectancy are in no way a guarantee of... Anything. There are significant outlier CF patients who are at an advanced age now despite the odds due to a variety of different factors, having lived the majority of their lives before the development of modulators.
But the fact remains that the odds are better now than they have ever ever been before, by leaps and bounds. It isn't cured, and many patients still need significant treatment in addition to Trikafta, but it is so much better than anyone could have dreamed of twenty years ago, and that is a triumph.
Yes! My sister has a serious form of cf and finally is living a more comfortable and active life. She was also part of many of the clinical trials leading to these breakthroughs due to the nature of her cf. It's been very exciting to see.

Finding out something big related to trans people happened in the news by an increase of "don't kill yourself" posts
Studies show that approaching youth with a bystander-intervention model is actually a lot more effective for reducing sexual assault, and it is also more enthusiastically received than programs that bill themselves as anti-rape.
We can tell youth that they are basically “rapists waiting to happen” (anti-rape initiative), or we can tell them that we know they would intervene if they saw harm happening to someone and we want to help empower them to do that (bystander intervention). The kids jump in with both feet for the latter! It was amazing to see children (and young boys in particular) excited to do this work and engage their creativity with it. Also, studies show that not only do they go on to intervene, but they also do not go on to sexually assault people themselves. Bystander intervention also takes the onus off the person being targeted to deter rape and empowers the collective to do something about it. It answers the question in the room when giggling boys are carrying an unconscious young woman up the stairs at a house party, and people are not sure how to respond and are waiting for “someone” to say or do something.

This is also, btw, how the US drastically reduced drunk driving in the US. Telling people they shouldn’t drive when intoxicated made absolutely zero difference. A slogan-and-ad-campaign for “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk!” changed drinking culture. Going after the bystanders is quite often the most effective thing to do in any social change.
This is I'm sure very obvious for most people already but I just had a belated realization about specific aspects of a specific genre of discourse regarding fiction, kink, etc. The emphasis certain people have on what is and isn't "normal," emphasizing how certain people are "freaks," and so on isn't just a weird quirk, I'm realizing, but rather a critical part of their argument.
The moment you say "Why should I not be allowed to read/write/watch/draw this when I do not have the same emotional responses to the subject matter that you do, when I would not attempt to dissuade you to do the same when you don't have the same emotional responses to certain subjects that I do?" It feels, at least to me, pretty cut and dry as an argument, but that's where framing the other person as an outlier whose opinions can not only be discarded morally but as a kind of demographic aberration comes in. The only rebuttal you can make to that, really, is "Because you are abnormal, and I am not, and therefore an argument about equal treatment does not stand." It's not a good argument, but it is a more topically-relevant rebuttal than the belabored arguments about how X is actually a form of harm, so I think you see the former much more than the latter
I also find that this argument is at the very least a lot more honest. Arguments about harm I think are difficult to apply to certain discussions (unless you do whole-heartedly believe in thought crimes, but that's a different group that I don't really find interesting enough to comment on because they're not people you can rationally argue with), because no matter the subject, unless you have VERY strong evidence to suggest it, it is very difficult to directly link broader societal trends of harm to the creative decisions of a single individual. Again, not impossible, there are plenty of easy examples where this would be the case, but again unless there is actual harm being done it is, once again, a belabored argument that typically concludes in extremely generic hand-waving statements about the Importance Of Critical Engagement that more often than not are tantamount to "In a just world, if you thought about this enough you would feel bad and stop engaging with it altogether," which is, I think most people would agree, pretty silly.
The honesty of the "You're a huge fucking freakazoid whose creative opinions and hobbies I neither respect nor (and this is key here) can stop thinking about" argument is in some ways much more directly relevant because it at the very least addresses the key issue of why such people should not have the same say over what you enjoy
(I do have certain thoughts over what I think is a wildly asymmetrical fixation in these arguments. When I say "can't stop thinking about" I do mean it almost literally, such people have an almost compulsive obsession with the notion that someone, somewhere, may Like This Thing In The Wrong Way, an overwhelming addiction to thinking about such people with dismay and disgust that, I've found, just simply does not exist the other way around. And of course people will argue "That's because those people are moral degenerates who have no ethical boundaries at all," which like, whatever, not going to address that, but I do think it's weird how nobody in that camp ever talks about how unusual it is, objectively, irrespective of whether you like x or y, to constantly think about the hypothetical camp of hideous perverts who are Getting Off To This, who are Trying To Normalize It, are Definitely Getting Mad At You For Not Being Into It)
Yeah. It is wild. Sometimes we do get obsessed with a kink we don’t like. But we have to recognize it’s a physical response, not a moral one, when it’s a kink.
The fine line I guess is if a kink requiring lots of safe, sane and consensual input in real life doesn’t show it in a story, when is the toxic dynamic fun for the reader. It feels like fanfic is written for fun so you can get as toxic as you like. For paid original fiction, though; the question of normalizing a kink without safe, sane and consensual emerges.
I guess fifty shades would be one example of kink controversy, but the author has the right to draft that sort of toxic relationship. It’s annoying she thinks English majors would complain about getting a newspaper gig, normalizing underpaid writing culture, but it’s her right.

See I find the issue of "normalization of unsafe kink" to be itself a pretty contentious topic because I find the belabored emphasis of sane/consensual/safety in fiction, unless explicitly, thematically centered on safety, astonishingly boring and poorly done, often dragging the entire story to a screeching halt and (again, unless this was baked into the marrow of the text) often poorly characterized and does a poor job of incorporating kink into the narrative as a result of having to break the kayfabe to be like "well hold on guys, here's how to do this RIGHT." I just like, y'know, won't insist that the "correct" way to approach it is to not include it at all.
But personally I find that the concern over the hypothetical reader who is 1) too ignorant to do their own research and will wholeheartedly accept the notion that Abuse Is Good, 2) is incapable of articulating their discomforts or advocating for their sexual needs in a way that can be explicitly attributed to the work itself to be overstated. I don't love the idea that this is a population that is the standard fiction audience, or that, even if it were the case, there is any kind of creative obligation to keep such a population in mind so as to avoid any kind of causal link between one's work and someone else's exploitation. Like taking Fifty Shades for example, sure, not safe, not consensual, etc., drawing from misogynistic ideas about sexuality, yes, contributing to misogynistic ideas about sexuality, possibly/probably, but I find that broader moral angle less interesting the fact that is is simply, as a whole, just not very good. If someone reads that book and enters an abusive relationship, I nevertheless believe there are a lengthy series of dominoes between point A and point B that we're a little too quick to fold. Again, I am apathetic about when other people DO choose to do this because I'll just avoid that stuff or find it kind of patronizing without necessarily thinking it shouldn't exist, but this is kind of exactly the issue I'm talking about
