Ok, I finally watched Project Hail Mary, and I liked it a lot! I liked the practical effects, and the puppetry, and Ryan Gosling has really grown on me as an actor, I thought he did a good job.
I do have a few questions though:
Was the score really intrusive for anyone else? I don't know whether it was because I was watching on my laptop and not in a cinema or even a TV, but the sound mix and balancing seemed really out. The music dominated the speech, and I had to put the subtitles on which I never normally do. Even when I could hear, I felt the score was a little overblown. There's a fine line between "supporting the emotions of the scene" and "over the top" and I don't think it always walked it.
Also, I may have missed it (because I wasn't paying too much attention to stuff about the film as I wanted to avoid spoilers) but I'd've appreciated a heads up for some extended sequences of flashing lights around the time they were gathering the taumeba, and when Grace was hurt. I couldn't actually watch Rocky getting him back onto the ship and to the med bay because of the flashing and flickering (it can trigger my migraines) and I feel I saw no one mention it. So this is a head's up!
Lastly, again might have missed it, might be in the book (which I haven't read) but we don't actually see Rocky's mate right? So why does literally every fanart have them drawn the same way, as a vaguely pyramidal teal form?
I loooove PHM and when I'm finally done with my exams tomorrow I'll have a rewatch!!
As to your questions:
I loved the score, but I watched the movie dubbed into German and in cinema, so the balancing might've been different.
We don't see Adrien in either the book or the movie! I can't say why the fanart leans the way it does.
