—- “hey varian!” karmi greeted, strolling up to him. she had her hands behind her back and rocking on the balls of her feet. “what’s up? whatcha working on?”
“Oh, um, hey, Karmi,” he replied, barely glancing up from his notebook. “Just sorta working on some idea concepts for inventions. Not really anything specific yet. What’s up with you?” he finally looked up at her. “You, um... you work on anything interesting lately?”

“yo, dude.” pascal called out, knocking on the door frame as he stood by the door, looking his friend over as he was hunched over his work, raising a brow as a small smirk began to curve his lips as he made his way over with a coffee in both hands, taking the moment to place varian’s down on the table he was currently occupying. “thought i’d stop by and getcha some go-go juice…you haven’t been here all night, right…?” he slowly questioned, trailing off at the end as he looked around at all formulas the other was looking at that pas was sure would never understand in a million years. @varianbanks
Varian looked up at the noise. He thought about telling Pas he was busy and didn’t have time for small talk, but before he could, he was walking in, coffee in hand, and he gave one to him. “Oh, um, thank you,” he said, giving a slightly awkward smile. “Phs, whaat, no,” he said, his voice a little higher than normal. Varian waved his hand as if to clear it from the air. “Maybe, but it’s fine. I’m just... I thought I was so close to figuring this one out but then I realized my math was off in one part so i had to backtrack through like hours of work, but it’s fine.” He took a sip of the coffee, the bitterness and warmth waking him a bit more. “Anyway, um, how’re- How’re you doing?”
“Um, I don’t know. I thought they looked kinda dashing.” (Lance)
“Well, they don’t look bad, but I need them,” Varian said, reaching for the gloves Lance had taken from him. “Unless you know how to solder and know which wires go where,” he motioned to the wires and circuit boards and chassis he was working with, “then go right ahead and keep ‘em on.”

🌟 Varian & Lance
Varian likes Lance a lot more than he shows. He gets annoyed with Lance getting in his way whenever he’s working on an invention or an experiment, but honestly, if Lance did ever really ‘get lost’ when he told him to, Varian would be a little upset.
If there’s someone bothering Varian, Lance is usually the first person he’ll tell. Not because he wants him to fight them or anything, but if there was to be any sort of incident, he’d want Lance backing him up.
If Lance asks him to hang out, Varian will, but he’s always nervous to be the one to initiate hanging out because he’s worried Lance won’t want to and he doesn’t want to get rejected.
Lance is like the cool and fun brother he didn’t know he wanted (or needed) in his life.
Lance helps Varian out of his comfort zone and while Varian might act like sometimes its too much, he always appreciates the nudge from Lance.

“I mean... probably not,” he said, brow furrowing, trying to sound supportive. However... if any of his friends did peak that early, Pas would be the most likely candidate for that. “You’re pretty cool now, and I’m sure you’ll just keep getting cooler. Since you’re like, entering the prime of your life and that apparently matters to some people and I dunno, I guess statistically speaking your best years are still ahead of you.”

“well how else are we supposed to know if you’re actually getting any better at chess,” Varian said with a grin. “This way, we can see how long it takes for you to win, and then can chart your growth. It’s... scientific to keep score.” And it felt good to actually beat Flynn at something for once.

“Well, sorry, you startled me,” he said defensively, feeling embarrassed he had tripped. “Don’t usually see people dropping out of trees with axes in their hands.” He looked up at her, still a little startled, but now mostly just confused. “What um. What were you doing up there?”

“So this is... fun, right? Lots, um. Lots of people around, but that’s alright.” Varian felt like he was too close to everyone at the picnic but he knew that was ridiculous. Nobody was really all that close, but there were just so many people. Which was great, but also loud and annoying. And even though that for the most part he couldn’t stand her and all her peppiness, at least Rapunzel was a familiar face. “Can’t imagine what that rave thing is gonna be like, right?” He chuckled almost awkwardly. “Are, um, are you gonna go to that?”

“It’s tons of fun!” Rapunzel was beaming. She was always cheery and happy. She adored the events on the island and was sure to attend each and every one if she was able to. “I really want to go. I don’t quite think my parents would approve of me going to that but they don’t have to know everything I do, right?” She giggled. “Are you enjoying yourself?”
Varian shrugged. “I mean, true but also... you’re an adult, right? Does it really matter if they’d approve or not?” He knew the answer was yes, it always mattered if your parents approved; at least in his mind. He always wondered if his dad would approve of the things he did, but the thought just makes him sad so he doesn’t dwell on those thoughts for long. “Oh, um. I dunno. Doesn’t really, uh, seem like my kinda scene, but ya never know... Maybe I’ll get a stroke of bravery and pop on by,” he chuckles a bit. He’d definitely be more inclined to go if he knew that Rapunzel or Flynn or really anyone he knew would be there.

Scuffing his feet against the ground for a minute, Dipper looked around the picnic area set up for everyone. So far no one he really knew very well was here - he should have known better than to come this early - but then he saw a semi-familiar looking face standing off by himself under a tree. Heading over there, Dipper figured the worst that could happen was a short, awkward conversation.. and that seemed a lot more bearable than looking like a complete loser standing in the middle of the picnic by himself. “Hey,” he greeted with a nod. “It’s uhm…. Valian, right?” @varianbanks
Varian leaned against a tree, one hand in his pocket, as he looked around the group of people. He didn’t see Flynn or Pas, or even Lance yet. Which meant, for now, it felt like he was there for no reason. He kept considering leaving, or at least going a little farther away from the festivities. But then someone walks up to him. He recognizes him. “Sure,” he says an instinct, but quickly corrects himself. “Actually, it’s Varian, but you’re close enough. And you’re Dipper, right?” He thought about saying his name wrong on purpose, but he doesn’t. Hard to mess up a name like that. “What do you, um... How are you?”

Varian couldn’t believe he was at the party for as long as he was. But his ‘friends’ kept convincing him. Honestly it made all his plans harder because it seemed like they actually liked him. And there was maybe a part of him that actually liked them too. Which, again, made his scheming a whole lot more complicated.
So he stayed at the dance. And after the second time of him asking, Varian finally turned to Pascal. “Fine, one dance. But only one, okay?” He already knew he’d feel ridiculous dancing in public. But at least Pascal would be there, so they’d at least look like idiots together, right? At least, that’s how Varian was looking at this.

Smee liked to think of himself as being generally a rather agreeable man. He wasn’t a pushover by any means, but he left well enough alone unless someone started something with him, in which case, yes, he stood up for himself. He’d had to, had to learn to, growing up in the situation he did, and those lessons he learned in his most formative years were the ones that stuck with him to this day. So when some idiot kid on the street bumped into him, he was on high alert, yes, but he wasn’t entirely ready to fight, because accidents happened, and he was trying to work on jumping to conclusions. When that same idiot kid, however, told him to watch where he was going? It couldn’t have been more than a moment before Smee was giving him a steady shove, perhaps towards the street, as he got a good look at him, and yeah. This would’ve ended badly either way. “Are you fuckin’ playing with me?”
Varian felt himself get shoved. He was both paying more attention and also slowly beginning to panic realizing he wasn’t really sure how to handle this situation. This guy would probably be able to fuck him up, and he’s very aware of this. “Yes,” he said, as an instinct, then quickly rushed, her heartrate spiking, “No! No, sir, I’m not.” Fuuuuuck! In that moment, Varian wished he couldn’t speak. He doesn’t know what to do. “I’m not- why would I be playing with you, I don’t... know what you’d mean by that, so I’m definitely not,” he took a step back, pausing when he realized he was about to step off the curb. That was just a stupid thing to say, of course he knew what he’d meant. He was just an idiot when it came to an actual confrontation. Or at least confrontation when people actually retaliated. “I, um. Fuck.”
Varian wasn’t paying as much attention to walking as he should’ve been. Honestly, he’d been doing it long enough, he didn’t think he’d need to. But of course, he ended up crashing into someone. Typical. Sure, he might not have been paying attention, but they weren’t either, so who’s fault was it really. “Watch where you’re going,” he griped, brushing himself off, making sure he hadn’t dropped anything. He looked up at the other young man, then shifted, hands twisting tight around the strap of his messenger bag. “Sorry,” he muttered, knowing he shouldn’t be so outwardly bitter, especially when he knew it was partially his own fault.
