logging into tumblr.com really is our daily dose of recess huh. i take a stroll down my dash and people are playing make-believe with cursed amulets, pondering their orbs, playing with jpegs like dolls. some of us are pretending to be wizards and villains and evil advisors and blob monsters (my preference). there's always a group playing Animals (wolf is very popular). the main topic of conversation is tv shows and cartoon characters, which we enjoy arguing about. recently there's been a juggling craze

If I and other autistics of color can recognize the signs, experience the outcomes, can even find different ways to explain them to you, then you can take the time to recognize how, regardless of your intent, you're being a bigot. I loathe this mentality here. Absolutely despise it. It fills me with a deep disdain and utter disrespect for people who act like it. It's not cute, it's not funny, and it's not acceptable.

I know this might make people mad, but absolutely refusing to even attempt to treat your mental illness, and instead just endlessly inflicting your unmitigated episodes on the people around you, is abusive. Your loved ones are not stress toys that you can just squeeze every time you feel bad. It is bad if someone says your repeated behavior is hurting them, and you take no steps to change. I know damn well that you can’t always help how your brain acts, but I’ve also spent a lot of years trying to stop my spiraling brain in its tracks, work on strategies to calm down, and consider the impact I’m having on others, because I grew up in a household with people who have the attitude of, “I have the right to consume all the attention in the house and drain your energy every single day because I feel miserable, and you’re the bad guy if you say that I’m making you feel bad and that I need to get help. I can treat you however I want because of my anxiety.”

i'll never forgive a certain genre of person for fostering this common conception that dostoeyvsky's works are all these horribly depressing, hard to read novels because that man's writing is funny as hell and reads like a long distance friend telling you about a local drama on facetime at 2am

this is a common phenomenon. the better you get, the more you recognize flaws. the good thing is you can strive to get better. but the bad thing is that you see nothing but flaws. you are actually getting better, but your editing/critical brain is getting tuned up and can see more things to improve. someone post the graph, I can't find it

a scene can start wherever you want it to

writing isn't real life. You don't need to set up a character walking into a room or two characters greeting each other and talking about the weather or what-have-you in order to lead into the conversation you actually want them to have. just start at the conversation.

hell, start in the middle of the conversation. you could even start at the end and then have one of them leave and the other one left behind to reflect back on what just happened.

writing gets easier when you open yourself up to writing the parts that are interesting, to starting where it's easy instead of where you think you should start.

if it ends up not working? that's okay. you tried it, and sometimes just getting something out of your head is a necessary first step to getting the words right

Piece of advice I've often been given (but don't necessarily agree with broadly) is "if you're bored, the reader's bored", so while I don't think you should use your personal interests singly as the driving force behind what appears on the page, I *do* think this is very useful first draft advice. Write what intrigues you. Write what excites you. Then, when your beta readers or agent or best friend tells you they feel like something's missing, go back and fill in the parts that are needed to connect the dots. But don't think "this filler is always there, so I must write it!" because I PROMISE you will end up with way more than you need and everyone will be bored, including you.
