The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.

I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widder’s work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals can’t perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And that’s how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!

So much of paleontology is "what did this beaked thing eat?" And then your best guess for years turns out to be so so so wrong.

Like Gastornis was thought to be a carnivore for decades and then carbon isotopes were like, "nah this thing was basically a giant goose honk honk".

Oviraptor was thought to be an egg eater, then much ink was spilled about whether it ate mollusks, and now it's thought to be an omnivore, but mostly a fruit/seed eater like a parrot.

Somehow this Adobe Stock image is the only art of an Oviraptor eating plants I can find. How is that?

And even birds with some teeth are getting in on these dietary mysteries.

Longipteryx was first thought to be a kingfisher-like hunter of aquatic prey, but it has since been found with seed contents in its guts, making it another surprise frugivore.

genuine question tho: What drives the assumption that a sample of stomach contents in an individual animal is representative of ALL individuals and all occasions? Is there a stats model at work here? -because; we keep doing this with actual living animals as well? many animals are opportunists! if you're hungry you'll eat things outside your usual preferences.. some animals are obviously more limited- obligate carnivores need meat.. but we all know cats will ALSO eat many other things. Geese eat fish and snails and eggs and seeds; and Deer eat birds and small rodents and eggs. and horses.. well, let's not think about what horses will eat.. My point is, there's a high likelihood of MORE DIVERSITY in many of our assumptions.

I think in the case of Longipteryx it wasn't just the seeds but also the presence of gastroliths that make it unlikely Longipteryx was a specialized fish eater as originally thought.

You are right though, a single specimen with stomach contents doesnt tell us the breadth of an animal's diet.

A great example is Microraptor, which we are lucky enough to have 4 confirmed specimens with gut contents preserved, and they all consist of different prey (birds, lizards, fish, etc.) When the first stomach contents were found (pieces of a bird) it was immediately posited that Microraptor was a bird specialist, but obviously that hasn't passed the test of time.
