It always makes me laugh and roll my eyes when certain international anime fans try to act like Japan is some apolitical world that is free of anything “woke,” when Tiger and Bunny 2 is currently ranked #5 over on Netflix Japan’s Top 10 List (and it rose up from #7 to #5 over the past day, so I won’t be surprised if it keeps rising). This franchise was also voted as the best anime back in 2017 (literally #1) through an NHK poll with over 10,000 anime to choose from and with 600,000 votes (links can mess up visibility of posts sometimes, so I won’t link the ANN article on it, but you can find it with a quick google search).

So Tiger and Bunny is an extremely popular anime and the sequel is proving to be popular, well liked, and well received. Yet, this anime has all of the things that those certain international anime fans always moan and groan about being “Western ideals” and such. We have:

Oh, how quickly the past is forgotten. 

They are part of the reason A03 is a thing now. Not the whole reason, but part of it. 

The Great Purges of 2002 and 2012 are when ff.net got a wild hair up their ass about THINK OF THE CHILDREN and nuked any fic posted on there that was explicit. Thousands upon thousands of nc-17 smutfics were lost.

It’s what led to the creation of alternate hosting sites for smutty fic…AdultFanfiction was the one I went to…but thousands of fics would never be recovered.

AO3 IS OUR SITE.

It is by fans, for fans. Fans do all the coding. All the legal paperwork. All the abuse/tos violation complaints. Fans make all the choices about policies. Fans decide how to run the fundraisers. Fans write the blog posts. All the volunteer staff are fans; all the people who train them are fans. Fans wrangle all the tags. 

(And the other OTW projects, too. Fans manage the entries at Fanlore. Fans run the Open Doors project. Fans publish Transformative Works and Cultures.)

EVERYONE WORKING FOR THE OTW LOVES FANDOM. Wants it to survive. Wants it to be awesome for everyone.

(Knows that it can’t be awesome for everyone; some approaches to fandom just clash hard. But they strive to minimize those clashes as much as possible, because they love fandom.) 

AO3 is not some company that decided, “we’ll make a site for fanfic and then…” I don’t know what people are thinking is the reason. Money? Data harvesting? Tax shelter? Amusement and pity?

Nope; AO3 was fans saying, “Livejournal sucks; we’re tired of this fucked-up ‘rebuild every three years’ garbage; WE NEED TO OWN THE DAMN SERVERS.”

That’s the “of our own” part of the name. OTW isn’t a “them” running the site “for us.” It’s “us” making places for “us” to share what we love with others of “us.”

MP100 Analysis: Teru’s Sexuality

(Honestly, “Teru’s Sexuality” isn’t what I really wanted to title this, but it was the simplest one I could think of. This analysis mostly focus on Teruki’s feelings for Kageyama and his gay coding. So I guess the extended title would be “MP100 Analysis: Teruki’s Romantic Orientation and His Feelings Towards Mob,” but that one doesn’t roll off the tongue as well.)

Okay, well, it took me a week to prepare for this, but here it is! I apologize for the long wait. Here are some ground rules:

1. I will only be using manga pictures. I am aware of the official art and the anime adding extra scenes. However, the canoncity (canonness?) of such material could be debated since it’s not the source material, but instead derived from it. I don’t want to face debates on me using faulty evidence.

2. Since I am using the manga, there will be HEAVY manga spoilers. Not slight such as “oh, Teru oogles Mob during this arc,” but MAJOR things such as screencaps of the last few arcs. If you’re okay with that, then good! But if you haven’t read the manga, I highly suggest you do that first. (AND that you read it from the beginning!)

3. While I am doing this because I personally believe Teru is gay, please do not take this post as fact/canon. I don’t want this to cause any drama in the fandom. It’s all for fun after all! And on that note, I don’t mind seeing everyone else’s takes on this.

4. As I was writing this I realized that I used “Kageyama” instead of “Mob.” So just to specify: “Kageyama” only refers to Shigeo. “Ritsu” is, well, Ritsu.

Adding to this, the Inuit communities in Nunavut KNEW where both the wrecks of the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were literally the entire time but Europeans/white people didn’t even bother consulting them about either ship until like…last year.

Indigenous Australians have had stories about giant kangaroos and wombats for thousands of years, and European settlers just kinda assumed they were myths. Cut to more recently when evidence of megafauna was discovered, giant versions of Australian animals that died out 41 000 years ago.

Similarly, scientists have been stumped about how native Palm trees got to a valley in the middle of Australia, and it wasn’t until a few years ago that someone did DNA testing and concluded that seeds had been carried there from the north around 30 000 years ago… aaand someone pointed out that Indigenous people have had stories about gods from the north carrying the seeds to a valley in the central desert.

SVSSS ABO AU where A!LBH goes into rut because of some stupid sex plot device (my awful brain imagined it happening some point close to or even during if you want to be truly awful the Immortal Alliance Conference which…I guess can be pushed back to after LBH is 18 for comfort’s sake) and is alone and scared and begs his beloved Shizun to help him. O!SQQ gives in because poor Binghe! The poor boy has enough pain coming his way, he deserves something kinda good to happen!

After the Endless Abyss happens SQQ discovers he’s pregnant. But is also heavy in denial. 

He literally denies he’s pregnant until he feels them move. At that point he has to come to terms with the fact that he’s going to be a parent. 

This is pretty impressive considering he ends up delivering triplets (two girls and a boy, boy is the middle child, youngest girl is very small when she was born) (No names decided for the bbys yet though)

He raises those babies for about two and a half years (triplets are often premature) and he loves them while still trying to do the whole Peak Lord thing (literally imagine his kids calling him Shizun because his disciples all call him that and toddlers are parrots). No one knows for sure who their father is. He won’t say. (But there are some theories, some are even correct!) but he has help caring for them (LQG helps him a LOT)

Then LBH returns. And hears that in the three years he’s been gone, his Shizun has become a parent (!). He is, predictably, VERY jealous and upset by the whole thing. LBH wants to see his Shizun’s babies (note: he doesn’t know they are his because he misjudges how old they should be since they were born early. According to LBH’s timeline, SQQ would have been already pregnant when they slept together) because well…they are Shizun’s!

I have this very heartbreaking image of SQQ being torn on being afraid for his children (since he doesn’t know how LBH will react to being a father, especially when the other parent is the man who ‘tried to kill him’) but also wanting them to know each other because well…LBH is their father!

LBH would never hurt those children, even thinking they were fathered by someone else (he suspects LQG) because well…he was beaten and abused as a child and…they are Shizun’s babies! He actually kind of loves them from the first moment he sees them.

Maybe SQQ tells LBH that he can do whatever he likes to him, torture him, even kill him, just so long as he promises now he will take care of the triplets. Because they deserve to grow up with at least ONE of their parents!

And when Binghe puts two and two together and realizes HE’S those babies’ father!!??? Tears. Absolute waterfalls of them.

(Little did Shen Yuan know that this world’s Luo Binghe is the same sadistic Heavenly Demon “Bing gē” who’d stumbled upon the alternate universe version of his “Shizun” enjoying marital bliss with “Bing mèi” in one of the released Extra short stories. It was also too bad that Shen Yuan, in his mortal form, resembled Shen Qingqiu by a good thirty-to-forty percent.)

(It’s a sort-of redemption fic. I think Bing gē deserves his own Shen Yuan. Some soulmates are just meant to be….)

Scumbag System Donghua: A pleasant surprise

I know SVSS fans had low expectations for the donghua, including myself, but it has a lot of heart put into it. Sure, the animation isn’t the best but that’s more a budgeting issue. With what they did get, the donghua team did amazing work!

Scumbag System makes up for it’s subpar animation with very good storytelling. It managed to capture the essence of SVSS immediately.

This mocking narration by Shen Yuan of the basic premise with 2D animation so perfectly establishes the story and what kind of a person SY is. His humour, personality and how he sees the novel gets established very quickly and you can’t help but get attached to this dumbass who hate-read 6666 chapters of novel. 

The next thing that caught my attention is the relationship between Sy!sqq and Lbh, how they establish where they are now and what they will be to one another in the future. I was happy to see that they didn’t try to imply any romance between Nyy and Lbh to un-homo it all. So far, they’re doing a lot to show how much sy cares for lbh.  The observations from afar, they little moments between them in the op, and the BIGGEST, most beautiful fucking symbolism of all;

The Jade pendant and the Leaf

That pendant plays a really important role in their relationship in the novel, but the visual representation of it here exemplifies it. You have to watch the scene to know how beautifully it panned out. Leaves are very explicitly related to Sy!sqq here. Shen Yuan uses them to protect Luo Binghe from the shadows. Yes, Luo Binghe lost his mother and she is irreplaceable but he isn’t alone anymore. Shen Yuan will protect him.

The third thing which I loved was the attention to detail when it came to the MCs. Shen Qingqiu is absolutely, mind-boglingly gorgeous. They put in so much effort to make him beautiful. It’s nothing like the first few trailers. 

THIS MAN! LOOK AT HIM!! WHAT’S HE SO GORGEOUS FOR!?(to distract us from the ctrl c+ ctrl v bg characters). He isn’t just pretty though. He’s expressive as heck. My main concern with 3D was expression, but the combination of all the painful effort into facial expressions added to the VA’s amazing work made Shen Yuan come alive!

They didn’t skimp on Luo Binghe. Oh no no no. This baby had me cooing at him in his entrance scene. He has large eyes and the prettiest face, plus he is even shorter than Ning Yingying when 14. They did a lot to make him the “pure white sheep”.

Look at this and tell me your heart didn’t break a little.

The VA also captures the “I’m so baby UwU!” thing perfectly and it just makes me want to protect this kid even more. Watching the episode, Luo Binghe had so many expressions going on when he got beat up by Ming Fan and his dumbass friends, I could feel his panic. The scene where he’s searching for the pendant, his frantic body language + the micro-expressions they tried to fit in. Perfection. I want to weep. 

The donghua team is doing their very best to preserve the feel of the novel. It’s fast paced but it doesn’t feel like it and leaves you wanting more. Both episodes ended in such cliffhangers I wish I could just binge through this. They’re preserving the romantic elements between sy!sqq and lbh to whatever extent they can(the ed and op, my god they have me screaming)

Speaking of, the Opening and Ending are so beautiful. The Opening is stuck in my head. 

JUST WATCH THE DAMN THING!

Yes the animation is clunky but the dialogue delivery, the comedic timing and the MC character designs+the soundtrack make up for it. Don’t let it go just because it’s a little difficult to get used to because you’ll be missing out. The donghua team did their best and I applaud them for doing so well.
