wifies arg has me going crazy because if you listen at around the 1:05 mark para asks wifies “what do you mean we’ll bring it back” (about the redstone) and just. hummer was probably never there huh. he’s no more real than the leviathan is.

and that makes it hit so much harder when wifies tells him “I don’t know if I can believe in something that might not even exist” and hummer responds “then believe in me.”

because as the viewer, once you catch the fact that hummer NEVER interacts with anyone other than wifies, you can’t be sure if he exists, any more than wifies is sure the leviathan exists. and suddenly you’re not sure about anything at all.

The only thing I could think about when I heard that the first female translator of the Odyssey into English, Emily Wilson, lambasted Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey movie (which he claimed to have based upon her translation) is how the first woman to ever translate the Odyssey, Anne Dacier, rebuked Alexander Pope when he claimed to have based his work off of her French translation.

He held her in high regard and valued her opinion as a scholar. Here’s what she had to say about that, in the second edition foreword of her Iliad translation, titled Reflections on Part 1 of Mr. Pope’s Preface:

She scolds Pope for being ignorant of Homer, for harming his reputation, for using her work without attribution, for willful ignorance of Aristotle (so well illuminated by her husband André) and of generally talking nonsense. Moreover, according to Madame Dacier, Pope implies that he could correct Homer and thus also implies that he could correct his nation's politics.

Like, the Amazons? The Amazons who are "equal to men", except they’re constantly defeated by them, thereby reaffirming who is truly stronger (Penthesilea with Achilles, Hyppolita with Heracles, the Amazons in general with Priam, the Amazons in general with the Greek during the Trojan War, the Amazons in general with Bellerophon)? The Amazons, often constructed as a xenophobic analogy for a foreign people who are exotic and attractive yet must be subjugated (in a way that is very much in line with the current definition of Orientalism, by the way), complementing the centaurs, who serve as an analogy for a foreign people who are not at all attractive and must also be subjugated because they are "irrational savages"? The Amazons who, when portrayed as the object of a male Greek hero's sexual desire, generally meet a tragic fate with that desire serving as the catalyst (Antiope/Hyppolita with Theseus, Penthesilea with Achilles)?

I mean, don't get me wrong, I also think they represent an interesting concept! They do indeed have gender-nonconforming traits! But calling their potrayal in ancient sources "feminism" is a a stretch and gives them too much credit. Warrior women are not synonymous with feminism...feminism is far more complex than just that. By that logic, any female character who knows how to fight is the pinnacle of feminism.
