It’s honestly just fundamentally bizarre to see people really earnestly talk about representation being so important, and then in their next breath explain how having a gay character in anything besides children’s media or fluffy romcoms is immoral, actually, and also that writing any media not entirely centered around characters of your own publicly claimed race/religion/sexuality/culture is essentially theft. 

Like, unless you’ve got a line to God and a plan for rapturing up all the straights, there’s a real tension between “There should be more stories with queer characters in every sort of role, to the point where it’s entirely normalized” and “Only a small minority of creators are allowed to write queer characters, and also only for stories that meet my exacting specifications”. You do kind of have to pick one or the other.

It’s part of a large problem present in internet spaces where its taboo to just say “I don’t like this, it’s not for me, but I recognize it’s importance to someone else.” 

There’s quite the allergy for accepting things one personally does not like without raising pitchforks and torches because so many on this website (and on the internet in general) spend their formative years in fandom-based social media circles that are propped up on witch hunts and drama, and any negative feeling is all negative feelings at once and must be expunged - including whoever caused the negative emotion, all of their works, and anyone who stands by them.

These conversations would have to happen a lot less if people stopped believing there was some mustache twirling didactic quality to LGBT people (or most writers) writing a tragedy or two, one can admit that it’s a preference that they like fluff and happy endings without raging and disparaging others who prefer media of all kinds.

Plus, it’s not like we can’t criticize queer representation the moment we’re comfortable with allowing representation from other voices. That’s what book reviews and critical dissection of a book/story is for.

I do sometimes think that a depressingly large amount of needless grief on the internet is just entirely caused by people latching on to a fandom so hard it becomes a core part of their identity, and then respond to anything threatening their conception of what it should look like as if it’s a grievous attack on them personally. Seems like it results in unhelpful habits, if nothing else. 

But, yeah, exactly. It’s entirely possible to accept a genre exists and just, not read it. Or be critical of a specific example of something without saying that nothing even vaguely like it should ever have been written.

i need some of you to realize that call out culture, by design, rewards people who make the most outrageous & aggressive accusations, without regards to truth or context. it encourages people to misconstrue, to erase context, to outright lie. it feeds the instinct to attack, with or without cause. 

and that naturally enables certain types of people (terfs, exclusionists, bigots) who already have a vitriolic bandwagon behind them, to target & harass minority bloggers whose inclusive platforms they do not like to see becoming popular.

this has happened time and again, it has driven good people off this site, it is traumatic and unhealthy to everyone involved. purity culture creates an atmosphere of fear & paranoia, i am begging you to reexamine this attitude of mob violence in online spaces

if you’re a mentally ill adult, especially if you’re psychotic or have bipolar, i highly recommend you look into getting a psychiatric advance directive. basically they’re a form you can fill out where you can specify what kind of treatment you want and don’t want in the case that you ever get legally declared incompetent. normally, getting declared incompetent means that psychiatrists take away your right to make decisions about your mental health care. for example, they can force you to take medications you don’t want or institutionalize you longterm without your consent. also the state appoints someone they choose to legally “consent” in your place.

what a psychiatric advance directive does is put limits on what the psychiatrists assigned to you can do. you can appoint your own person to be your legal representative, someone you trust who knows you and cares about you. you can also specify what hospitals you don’t want to be sent to or what doctors you don’t want to see or medications you don’t want to take or whether or not you consent to electroconvulsive treatment. you can also say what you do want, like i put down that they decided to institutionalize me, i wanted it to be at a specific psych ward i’d already been to and had a not terrible time at. and now, if i ever get declared incompetent, psychiatrists are legally not allowed to put me back on the meds that gave me a seizure. 

nobody wants to be legally declared incompetent. it’s really scary to think about, but it does happen, especially to people with psychosis or bipolar disorder. it’s better to have legal safeguards in place ahead of time and not need them than to get declared incompetent and not have an advance directive

Whenever I see adult fandom antis who are 20 or older spewing the same tired simple rhetoric as 14 year olds, I’m going to automatically suspect they’re predators trying to draw kids in by looking like a “good adult”.

Because predators groom by making themselves seems to perfect and appealing, and any adult who shows nsfw content specifically to kids, even in the name of “showing how gross it is” will never be a good, safe adult. Lots of the content they show never would’ve been seen by kids if that person hadn’t yanked it off someone’s private locked account anyway.

Adult fandom antis are probably predators. They will point fingers to keep suspicion off them. They will hurl all kinds of accusations and make up straw man arguments so you don’t have time to look at them or what they’re doing.

Always be suspicious of adults who act like that. They’re likely the ones grooming minors to spew the rhetoric. These adults may post the most wholesome stuff and then say creepy weird stuff to kids in private.

Someone’s tastes in fiction are not a sign of their real world morals.

If art is used to groom anyone, the fault is on the predator misusing the art, not the art or the artist whose art is being misused unless the predator is also the artist.

Stop giving predators an out. They are always the ones at fault when someone is harmed by them.
