[Video Description: a one minute TikTok by @/ashwynsingh of a man wearing a grey hoodie doing stand-up.
"In Hindi, you can blackmail your friends out of their sadness! In English, all you can do if your friend is sad is 'oh my God, I'm so sorry. If you need anything, let me know. I'm here for you.' In Hindi, you can go 'think about how sad I would be if you are sad.'"
[Audience laughs]
"Thereby blackmailing them out of their sadness because what kind of friend lets their other friend be sad which is the whole reason you started this blackmail to begin with!"
"Just walk up to your sad friend like [singing in Hindi] 'Think about it, my beloved, how much I love you.'"
[Audience starts singing along]
"I cry as well when there are tears in your eyes."
[Speaking] "And the audacity of this man that is singing in full key to be like [Starts singing again] 'I do not know singing yet still I sing. That Aditi I understand sometimes the world is in darkness, but only after the night does morning come.'"
[The audience sings along even louder]
[Speaking] "Hey, good job guys."
There is a screenshot of a comment under the video that reads "This man fulfilled his Bollywood dream of breaking into song with background characters completely knowing the lyrics."

while i hope the AI boom dies out i also hope we start acknowledging data center water overconsumption as it's own unique issue because like. it's not AI itself that harms the environment it's the hardware hosting it, right? same reason nfts and cryptocurrency were also bad for the environment. the root problem isn't going away so long as we allow big companies to continue hitching their wagon to the next big tech trend. i worry if they don't get stronger regulation we'll just be repeating the same issue whenever the next toy comes along.

I was lamenting a few years ago that this era doesn't have a Conrad Veidt or Vincent Price. I've never been so glad to be wrong
genuine question — how is donating money going to help Palestinians if no food is going in? What is the money for?
Medicine, water, supplies, food, fuel (much of it black market being upsold at egregious prices) — these all cost money and pretty much all Palestinians in Gaza have no source of income now. It’s drops in the bucket compared to ending the siege and occupation but it’s one way to do at least something small to help. Others are in need of money to evacuate when the border opens again (which hopefully is asap…), tuition and supplies for school to continue studies despite it all. Another fund is focused on trying to rebuild farmlands in Gaza to get food again that way.
I can’t tell anyone what to do with their money but I don’t think this mindset of “well nothings going in so we can’t help” is helpful for people on the ground who are the ones saying that donations can and do help them survive.
The Sameer Project also explained where they're getting food:

what are you're favorite paul/george quotes?
“I’ve never known two people that love each other so much, and don’t even realize it.” – Eric Clapton
“ I believe Paul missed George as much as — if not more than — anybody.” – Eric clapton
“I got married in 1966 and Paul was my best man. He cancelled his holiday to do it. Then he got drunk and put a bow-and-arrow through the car window. But until then it was great.” – George
“I just know that whatever we’ve been through, there’s always been something there to tie us together” – George
‘The last time I met him, he was very sick and I held his hand for four hours. As I was doing it I was thinking “I’ve never held his hand before, ever. This is not what two Liverpool fellas do, no matter how well you know each other.” I kept thinking, “he’s going to smack me here.” But he didn’t. He just stroked my hand with his thumb and I thought “Ah, this is OK, this is life. It’s tough but it’s lovely. That’s how it is.” I knew George before I knew any of the others and I loved that man. I’m so proud to have known him.” - Paul
“Underneath it all, I believe that Paul sincerely loved George; and at some level George loved Paul as well. ” – Peter Dogett
“George told me once that I smelt like home. I got all paranoid, you know, thinking I smelt of fish and chip shops or dirty bars or something. But he said no, I just always smelt of home.” - Paul
“Paul is very protective of George.” – Bob Smeaton
“George was always known as the quiet one, but he had a wicked sense of humour. He and Paul tricked two fans into thinking that they were really brothers and George signed his name “George McCartney” for them.” - Denise Theophilus
““They used to jump on me. George used to wake me up by tickling my feet.” – Paul
“There was this guy called Ritter who was in our group at school, and George was in the younger group, and I remember we’d been standing around at playground and I’d tried to introduce George to Ritter, introduce him into my peer group. And being a year younger it was kind of difficult. I said, ‘Hey, this is George Harrison. He’s a mate of mine. We get on the same bus together.’ And we’d been sitting around, and George suddenly head-butted this friend of mine. When asked for the reason for the headbutt, George replied: ‘He wasn’t worthy of your friendship.” – Paul
Interviewer: Is matrimony in the immediate future for the two unmarried members of your group? Paul: Matrimony is not in the immediate future. George: Paul won’t have me.
“God, my mate George, isn’t he a good-looking boy!” - Paul
“Thing is, there’s a lot about me and George that the public don’t know about, and I like it better that way. That night was very personal, and very special to me. It’s one of my favourite memories.” – Paul
“I knew George long before the others. We were good chums despite his tender years as it seemed to me then. We were always together.” – Paul McCartney
“It used to be PaulnGeorge… as one word. They were the kids from the grammar school. That’s how we referred to them. For ages we didn’t even know George really, he was just ‘Paul’s mate’.” – Len Garry
“In Liverpool, Paul would come round my house and we’d play in the living room. Paul knocked me out with his singing especially, although I remember him being a little embarrassed to really sing out, seeing as we were stuck right in the middle of my parents place with my whole family walking about. He said he felt funny singing about love and stuff around my dad.” — George
I think we have now grown old enough to realize that we’re both pretty damn cute!” - George
“He was my little baby brother” - Paul
the wisdom ive learnt is that becoming part of a friend group 1) takes a long time and 2) involves a lot of feeling awkward and left out at first. there’s nothing terrible about this but if you grew up chronically lonely or have any kind of trauma relating to social isolation this likely feels Really Wrong and activates danger signals. but both fortunately and unfortunately it’s just how becoming close to new people works most of the time
another thing that was not intuitive to me as someone who grew up an autistic loner: basically everyone on the planet is starved for connection all the time and almost everything people do is an attempt to reach out to another. most seemingly illogical interactions and behaviours can be explained by this. you have to take as many of these invitations as you can. even if you're wrong you still attempted to bring more warmth into the world
Crawling out of my hole to remind people that with this current update to Firefox (version 144) they've gone and dumped in their lot with a buncha lil AI tools, namely Perplexity as a new search engine.
So if the sound of that leaves your mouth tasting of tar, here's what you want to do:
In the url bar, type in about:config
It'll give you a big scary warning page that you might poke holes in your browser. Good. You want to do that. Click continue.
One by one, you're going to need to put each of these into the search bar in the page, not up top:
browser.ml.enable browser.ml.chat.enabled extensions.ml.enabled browser.ml.linkPreview.enabled browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled browser.tabs.groups.smart.userEnabled
Each of these are gonna have a lil toggle icon on the right hand side that looks like a funky double-ended arrow. Click that and the value next to it should change to false. It all auto saves as you go. Some of these might already be set to false by default and that's peachy.
The next best thing you can do for yourself is to set your default search engine to udm14 or Qwant, but for now, we're just tidying the garden a lil bit.
Edit: This wildly broke containment for a post that was supposed to be me basically ranting and grumbling like an old man on my porch to my homies. If I’ve inspired you to follow through with this, peachy. That was mildly intended. Better yet, I hope I’ve spurred a buncha you on to do your own bit of digging and research.
If you were one of today’s lucky ten thousand to learn something new, I hope you keep doing it. I won’t be here to hold your hand through it, as I simply don’t have the time nor spoons for it, so I implore you to go down your own rabbit hole and chase knowledge with wild abandon.
online communities are so strange because people slip away so easily. you can be on here for years, folding people you've never met into the fabric of your daily life, and then they disappear, leaving only ghost posts scattered across tumblr behind. or their blog stays dormant, for weeks, months, years, until you're only still following them because you remember that they love sunflowers or they were kind to you when they didn't have to be or the last thing they posted was sad and raw and you still worry about them sometimes.
and sometimes they come back when you least expect it, years later, even, and there's this sudden rush of relief like there you are, there you are, even though you barely knew each other.
there's a strange kind of love to it. i don't know you and i want to hold your hand across miles and time zones and oceans. i can still see the imprint of you in this community you left. you don't think anyone will notice or care when you're gone, but we notice and we care and we wish you well.
i hope you're all okay out there. i hope the sun is shining on your face and you are breathing deeply. i miss you.
there's a lot of truly excellent digimon designs but i think they really peaked with a little frilled lizard that turns into a dimetrodon that turns into an ojousama lamiagirl that turns into an even more ojousama spin on medusa with boots that open up and bite people. absolute S tier line that doesn't get talked about enough
^^ this? this is peak.
Sinantropía, 2023 photographs by Txema Salvans from the collection of Fundación Foto Colectania, Barcelona
Synanthropy is the concept that defines the ability of some species of flora and fauna to adapt to environmental conditions created or modified as a result of human activity. As an example of this concept, we can mention storks, which we have subjected, degrading their habitats to the point of scarcity. We have forced them to colonize structures completely alien to their natural environment, displacing them near landfills and making them coexist with plastics and other waste. - Txema Salvans (abridged)

Nothing makes me feel like more of an absolute fucking idiot than cooking.
An Assyrian guy put a rice recipe up here awhile back and it was the best rice I've ever eaten. The recipe? Half-cook the rice and then bake it in butter. It had somehow never occurred to me that you could do that. Of course you can do that. Did I just think the rice was allergic to the oven or something.
I cooked rice like this and had some left over so I used it to bulk out my sad pathetic watery homemade vegetable soup. To my huge surprise it turned it into the best soup I'd ever eaten. Magically gave it real body, made it textured and nurturing, held heat better, added massive depth of flavour.
Hey guys did you. Did you know that butter. Did you know that if you put fat in food it makes it more satisfying and adds textural depth. Hey did you know that some flavours aren't very soluble in water and are instead soluble in fats, so if you add some fat to your watery soup then. Then the flavours. Hey guys did you know that butter is a fat.
Mind blown super surprising in my late thirties hey guys did you know that sad watery soup can be improved with some fat? Just like sauce or meat or basically any other food which I already knew about? Did you know it works for soup as well? Did you know that some flavours are more soluble in
I have a chemistry background.

(grabs you by the shoulders) you have to make room for new experiences in your life. you have to go through the unpleasant work of leaving your comfort zone, even if just for a few minutes at a time. because if you don't, your brain will trick you into stagnation. you will start to believe that the world can barely fit you in it. but that's not true. it's the opposite way around. you can fit the whole word inside of you. your task is only this: to welcome it with open arms
Love the tags!
ah lads not the stagnation i've been tricked again
robot discrimination allegories are kind of tired and hard to do right but i do think theres smth interesting in exploring the themes of humanization and dehumanizion with androids. like customer service robots built to be humanoid while the worker drones aren't. how certain people may be more willing to empathise with a robot that looks like a white person over a real human being. would companies want to create androids that act as humanlike as possible in order to exploit customers empathy? or would they do the opposite in order to avoid questions about ethics and sentience? much to think about. much to think about.
i think if youre designing robots characters its interesting to think about their purpose in universe, whether their creators would deem it neccescary to humanize them, and thus what that says about how we treat the real life humans that already do those jobs. does this make any sense.
