OH HAHA YEAH SURE I HAVE IT
A drunken son of Atreus in his thirties 🩸
Nestor’s speech
(People in order: Nestor, Agamemnon and his children, Menelaus and Helen, Ajax the greater and Ajax the lesser + Teucer, Diomedes, Achilles and Patroclus, Penelope, Odysseus)
Diomedes kicked Ares' ass.
I love the “what if Paris took Menelaus instead of Helen” AU as much as anyone—hell, I’m writing it—but since I’ve been developing the story, I’ve realized that Agamemnon would probably take the news of Menelaus being spirited away even worse than Helen
Penthesilea among other Trojans, by Jose Daniel Cabrera Peña in "Heroes of the Trojan War"
I watched Troy 2004 for the first time and the biggest thing I got out of it is that Sean Bean was fucking pitch perfect as Odysseus and I wish he got to do an Odyssey project
actually I'm going to elaborate on my specific ass vision of Paris who starts to lose it after Hector dies. I think he should start to feel the walls closing in after he's gone and the crushing weight of the Consequences of his actions start to press on him. It's not like he's not lost other brothers in this war, its not like he hasn't grieved them, its not like he's not aware that troy blames him for all this, but he could look to the bright side because Hector is here and as long as Hector still stands the walls will still stand (so why should I have to give up what I've been promised its not like my brothers have ever had to fight for what they had they've always lived in luxury with their pick of women-), but now the Defender of Troy (and, despite his anger with paris, one of the only ones who ever defended him,) is gone so now he doesn't have that assurance anymore and maybe that's when the dam starts to crack
I want his relentless optimism to become forced, I want it to border on mania. I want him to drag Achilles' corpse into the fucking throne room or something to Make A Point. He throws a party to celebrate vanquishing him, gets roaring drunk, and then after that finds more and more excuses to get roaring drunk. I want him to desperately try to cling to Helen for support, he just gets obsessive and unpredictable towards her to a degree he's never been before, and it starts to genuinely scare Helen. He can't give her up and finally end this, you see, he just can't, he needs her, he'll be nothing without her, she's his lifeblood, and he'll die without her, yes he is totally still completely in control of his life, and even if he did it might not fix anything at this point, do you want this to all be for nothing, did my brothers die for nothing? I want him to laugh for no reason, I want him to blow up, I want him to cling to the temple statue of Aphrodite in desperate prayer and beg her not to abandon them, you've saved me every time before please don't let us fall to ruin now. Do you GET ME
I fw with this version of Paris so much, like it's so poetic for a character like his. A young and sparkling prince, a noble who has never experience true consequences until now, finds himself unable to make an excuse for his behaviour. Not because he can't, it's because no one is left nor will anyone listen. That the only people left spite or fear him, that there is no apologies or begging left for there will only be the cold glare of a statue or the frantic begging of Hellen. The gods have abandoned him and the only people he has left are merely tolerating his behaviour because he's the only leader they have left (besides maybe Parim, although I ain't too sure about that).
Yet it would be so interesting to see Paris hallucinating the walls of Troy getting closer and smaller each minute. He walks into the streets, pass the starving civilians and crowds of people, only to find each way towards the walls is closed off BY the walls. And when he finds another way to get to them, they're cut off by the walls. This happens over and over again until Paris finds himself shouting like a mad man on the street imagining the walls of Troy are literally squishing him-boxing him in like a rat in a cage until somebody slaps him out of the hallucination. Yet, have the walls truely gone? Is he free, or does he still get trapped by the walls that he has forced onto himself? (Sorry if that made no fucking sense im just ranting here)
I’m putting a ban on all future iliad adaptions that focus on that one (1) line by Eurpides that gives Aga and Cly a completely nonsensical violent and sad backstory which for some reason every modern author loves to latch onto despite showing up nowhere else and the sky thus being the limit… After reading Yet Another novel with that take, I sketched this all out in one sitting because i am TIRED and really need some more takes to remember that what makes a story a Tragedy is that it wasn’t a tragedy from the very beginning :^)

🐣freshly hatched spartan princess🐣
i just love the idea of helen wearing a little adorable egg hat as a child, since she hatched out of one in the myths
the thing about the catalogue of ships is that it is not Epic in the sense that it is elevated action sequences or lofty emotional drama but people are trying to read it in the same way that they read those scenes (and often they try to read it like they would a novel. which also imo doesn't work for the combat or drama parts of the iliad.) it is a Catalogue and should be read as a Catalogue. it is a depository of knowledge and condensed into stacked references. it's the IMDB of the trojan and even the entire greek mythos. its Epicness is in its referentiality/intertextuality
so reading it with full impact means either 1) having your wikipedia/mythology handbook/etc open on the side or relying on your mythological foreknowledge and suddenly instead of just reading a list of boats you are going 'that guy is a son of THESEUS???? wait that guy SACKED THEBES mere years before this??? wait that guy is descended from poseidon and a witch??? wait that guy is known for his magic horses???' and suddenly all these guys, when they pop up in the rest of the epic, gain a whole new level of characterization because you know the Lore. but since the iliad is a SUPERMASSIVE epic the Lore has been packaged into a neat list form for maximum efficiency. an ancient greek audience, with the mythological knowledge they would have had, could do this effortlessly and would have enjoyed it immensely.
the impact and imo the enjoyment comes out when you follow up on the cues the catalogue gives you.
#AND THIS IS WHY I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!!#it is absolutely FASCINATING how the catalogue positions the trojan war within the context of wider mythos#which i think people knocking on it dont really understand this but. so much of greek myth & legend is tied together thru the catalogue!!#you NEED that list so that you can grasp both the magnitude of the war and how it fits into the cosmic order (if that makes sense)#it also is fascinating in the context of EIA greek polities (thebes is instead called ‘hypothebai’ which could have so many implications)#also the trojan allies section how do you guys not enjoy this portion thats essentially a window into how greeks perceived anatolians??#although you shouldnt read like toooo far into it (epic tradition was constantly evolving atp) its still an immensely valuable source#for how many scholars approach the population distribution+political dynamics+percieved powers during that transitional period#which we have no written records during and otherwise have to rely on archaeological evidence like pottery#[which is. its own can of worms]#iliad#catalogue of ships#catalogue of ships my beloved. my fuckin beloved. i’d die for you catalogue of ships @doloneia

Clytemnestra & Iphigenia (1 year later redraw)
aspect of menehelen no one sees the vision of is its "man who has lived in constant chaos and terror for his entire youth, only recently got into a position of any sort of peace and stability either shortly before or after getting engaged, possibly sees his wife as his sole source of said stability, and who desperately wants to be loving and noble and break the cycle but has no fucking idea what that looks like because his best example is a man who also grew up terrified and is dealing with it by squeezing everything he can get his hands on until it goes limp in his grasp x woman who was looked at as an object of desire since she was very young, had her innocence stolen from her, (depending on how far you think the theseus thing got) was a victim of csa, and has come to feel entirely separate from other people, she is not like humans she was born from an egg and spoken of like a rare bird and there is an impenetrable wall between her and mortals, she cannot put into words what is happening inside her and she doesn't know how to get people to understand". like i need their neuroses to have pvp turned on despite them desperately not wanting this to be so
