This is the same sort of idiocy as "girls can't like video games". It's complete nonsense of course.

I think some guys convince themselves that it's true to protect their fragile egos when they strike out with girls. That way, they can tell themselves that "she didn't like me because I like sci-fi/video games/etc", instead the real reason, which is that these guys are often creeps and/or jerks towards women.
