random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google

I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.

ok so, I approached my local library with a proposal to donate a mural as a way to A: build portfolio/gain practical experience and B: give back to a beloved public institution. The director was very enthusiastic about it and i've been working on it since the beginning of March. Come with me as I endeavor to paint what is in all honesty an excessive amount of birds

I wanted the birds to look like they were actually in the space so first thing after doing the draft was to do a lighting study

after that I covered the walls in letters in lieu of a projector/vr headset bc i have neither of those :) Then i take a picture of the section of wall and superimpose the lineart over top of it so I can pencil in the lines

et voila

and that was a whole week on it's own so next comes the paintin' >:)

the male and female ones are gonna be posted separately bc they're taking a lot longer lol but yea! super happy i was able to capture the iridescent green of the head, i found metallic green and blue paint at a craft store that really made his head POP. it looks better in person i promise

ALSO!! As this is the 10th one, BIG announcement. The end is in sight!!!!! I plan to finish within the next 3 weeks and there will be a small dedication ceremony/ unveiling happening at the library to commemorate its completion on the 16th of May. the 16th is looming in the distance so i'm trying to get thru these as quickly as i can so i can have as much time for the GBH as possible. i still need to do the names next to all of them so i've got about a week and a half to finish everything which is GREAT because i have adhd and nothing gets my ass in gear like a fuckin deadline, let me tell you

and NOW that they are complete, ITS GO TIME, in the next five days (library's closed for mother's day 😭😭) i need to have the GBH fully rendered, the names of the birds vectored, weeded, masked, applied to the wall, and then painted, plus additional cattails throughout. I may be able to get away with just getting the GBH done in time for the unveiling and then just have the names and cattails added later, but i'm gonna really try to get it all done in time. BUT, i have a plan. Part of why i take so long on these is because i really am just figuring it out as I do it lmao. there have been many a time where i am sitting on top of the ladder googling "how to paint birds" but I think if i take the time tomorro to do all that figuring out how to approach it beforehand, this will go a lot faster. I may also recruit some of my artist friends to help with the placing of the names... hrmm we'll see.

Anyways, shout out to the librarian who tracked down exactly the thing i needed so i could figure out where to place the highlights in my birds eyes, ur the real mvp

thank you to everyone who reached out or got excited about this project, it genuinely gave me the fuel i needed to keep going. In total, the 480+ total hrs it took me to cover this wall pales in comparison to how long its expected to spend on there, hopefully imparting a sense of beauty and love for the natural world to the next generation and here's hoping i'm only getting started with these.

My "Transparencies" quilt took 1st in category (pieced modern traditional) in my guild's recent show!

This was my first big guild show and while I hoped to place, landing in first was a happy surprise! I've also entered this quilt into an upcoming juried show (also my first), so keep your fingers crossed for me.

artemis ii, 2026.

American colonial coverlet design.

This tapestry is my depiction of the Artemis II mission as a traditional US American colonial coverlet. In each corner, four diamonds (astronauts) surround a circle (the moon). Semi-circles (earthrise) make up the borders, and the dark circles (the moon's dark side) in the center are repeated in a 9 by 9 grid (nine days in space).

By designing artemis ii in the style of a traditional coverlet, I wanted to make it explicit that our colonial history - and the immense harm therein - is intrinsically woven with our modern success. The weave structure (our history & our ongoing harm) is the foundation that makes the design (our successes) possible.

This project started as an obsession with finding the origin of a popular late-1800's coverlet draft named Lee's Surrender. Given its name and its age, I really wanted to know more about who designed it and why. The assumption is that it's named for the surrender of confederate general robert e. lee, but is the name celebratory or mournful? If I make this, would I be displaying a confederate dogwhistle in my home? Etc, etc.

After lots of searching and no well-sourced answers, the final nail in my research coffin was Eliza Calvert Hall's 1912 "A Book of Handwoven Coverlets." She lists, for an entire page, the questions that plague her about coverlet names. And among them:

If we've been asking this same question for over a century, then it might not be possible to know. The knowledge is likely lost to time.

However, in my research, I found one theory I thought was interesting - that Lee's Surrender wasn't named as a manner of opinion, but rather as an impartial description. Many coverlets from this era are named after what they depict. The squares in the center might be soldiers lined up in formation, walled in by the surrounding borders; the corners, explosions from muskets or cannons.

Even if that's true, even if somehow its creator named it with complete indifference (which I doubt), it is still an act of creation and therefore still has inherent political meaning.

And as I thought about all this, I also watched live as astronauts approached the moon. I listened with intense interest as they described the greens and browns visible on the surface. I waited in horror for the nuclear destruction promised by my government back on Earth. I held my breath during reentry. Finally, the US military airlifted the astronauts from their capsule to safety. The same US military murdered thousands of Iranians in air strikes that same week.

artemis ii is a modified version of Snowballs (A Handweaver's Pattern Book by M. P. Davison, p. 181). I hope I've done enough to justify giving this version its own name.

It simultaneously represents my celebration of our scientific achievements - of the good that comes from space exploration, and my condemnation of the violent legacy needed to get here.

If, 100 years from now, someone finds themselves asking if artemis ii was named in sorrow or in triumph, here is the answer:

I named it for both.
