I really cannot overstate how xenophobic a world Valdemar is, even characters who are supposed to be Good will say stuff like oh all the crime in the lower city is because of the immigrants. It’s egregious. Because of the premise of the horses making this kingdom extra good, which is in constant conflict with the traumatic backgrounds of the protagonists, I keep waiting for the reveal that it’s all a lie and the horses are just mind-controlling everyone to be racist so they can maintain horse control. Remember in the Graceling books there was that kingdom where everyone thought they were happy and prosperous but actually their king was brainwashing all of them to forget every time they disappeared someone? I feel like that’s what’s happening in Valdemar but the psychic horses got to Mercedes too

I don't remember which book it's in but there's a passage that's like, if the Queen knew about these criminal neighborhoods she'd scour out all the crime and clean it all up, and then she'd leave and it would go back to being like it was before, so it's better to never let her find out about that whole aspect of the city. Really...specific...idea of a just ruler and a desirable kingdom.

I have the impression that the Queen/king just sort of don’t give a shit about actually ruling the kingdom which is fascinating to do in a Just Rule story! Like it’s not even “not addressed” like you said they’re actively preventing the ruler from knowing the problems the kingdom has. THE HORSES ARE BRAINWASHING EVERYONE!

tyson makes it to tartarus, hes scared. crying. he just wants his big brother, and peanut butter, and the sea ponies, and he doesn’t know what he did wrong. hes so afraid– that is until he meets bob. bob takes tyson under his wing, and they spend hours talking. about peanut butter, the ocean, poseidon, and most importantly, the stars. when bob asks about them, tysons face lights up. hes so excited. he talks about them– the different constellations percy taught him that one night they spent at the beach. how he wants his own constellation. he describes them, not being the best with words, but able to paint an appropriate picture of the lights that litter the sky. bob doesnt need percy to say hello to the stars for him, anymore. tyson brought the stars to him.

This is fantastic and heartwrenching, but it’s very bold of you to assume Percy will let Tyson die. Generation after generation of Jacksons will make sure Tyson never dies.

Ok so I’ve been playing for 18 years and i’m a string teacher. Can i just say how IMPORTANT it is for young kids to see a BLACK, MALE-PRESENTING PERSON playing, nae, SHREDDING on a violin? I’ve know maybe 5 black people who played stringed instruments throughout my schooling and teaching (predumably because i’m an upper middle class white woman). In districts where the population is predominantly black, funding is always low, so the instruments are crappy. Kids quit, or the program is dismantled. I’ve seen very few professional string players who are black.

Obviously there are black string players. We just don’t see them because they “don’t look like” string players.

This person is the real deal. They were clearly classically trained, and seems to have some fiddle training as well. How cool is that?
