Finally some quality content in my portfolio
Sometimes it feels like people have forgotten that friction & frustration can be an intentional part of a game's design
There's still hay being made over Groal + his runback in silksong and a common opinion I see is that it's a mistake or oversight on team cherry's part and it's like, no? They know what feelings they're trying to invoke. It's why I laughed out loud when the bench popped up after beating Groal.
You're meant to feel like it's an unreasonable slog, it's a real challenge that demands you stay focused and cool-headed. That's why there's a hidden bench halfway through, it rewards staying curious while your patience is being tested.
Feel like a lot of discussions about game design could be pre-empted just by asking "do you think a game invoking negative emotions and a game having bad design are the same thing?"
Also Bilewater is like. The anger place. The whole thing about Bilewater is that the Citadel polluted it to the point that it's not a place to live in. At all. And the Stilkin tribe make it their life's mission to spite the Citadel for what they've done.
Bilewater is NOT a cakewalk. That's the point. You're supposed to be upset at this place. And you're supposed to see this place over and over again on the runback so it really sinks in. This isn't about what Groal is doing, this is what the Citadel has done to their home. This is about why they're so angry and power-hungry. This place SUCKS.
This is the same reason why there's pay-per-use benches in the Underworks and nowhere else, actually. The Underworkers are being worked to death, without even being allowed to rest in death. Even resting normally is heavily discouraged— assuming on-cycle and off-cycle are equivalent to workday and resting time, the confession booth recommends bugs sacrifice their resting time to atone for their sins, no matter what they actually did. While you can't tell the player to not take a break lest they be punished (how?), you CAN discourage it by making benches pay-per-use, and it illustrates how miserable the Underworkers were.
If those places were more pleasant, more fair, sure, it would be nicer to play... however, that's not the story they're telling. Those places killed bugs just for trying to exist. You're supposed to feel that.
I just wanted to get into Blasted Steps, but my evil twin keeps denying me entry ):
I was feeling agitated and artblocked yesterday so I decided to give my brain a rest by watching TV and then the next thing I knew these were in front of me

the way im incapable of having a conversation about weight with normal people. those conversations feel like a mine field because there are no right answers. im not gonna feel sorry for you that you gained weight and i dont have any dieting tips and your self depreciating weight jokes arent funny and i dont feel like congratulating you on your weight loss with how mean to your past self you are being and it doesnt feel good that you think that me wanting to gain weight is weird or stupid. sorry

We read Persepolis, and watched the adaptation, in the 10th grade, and it's stayed with me ever since. I'm eternally in awe of Marjane Satrapi's bravery and resilience, and may she rest in peace.
