HOW DO I REBLOG THIS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE
“The camera adds 10 pounds” is a phrase of the past. Now people look better in their pictures than they do in person
When people say that the camera adds ten pounds it’s because cameras used in filmmaking/TV production have a wider focal length and therefore subjects look wider or bigger. Whereas cellphone cameras have a short focal length that makes subjects appear thinner or smaller.
Nowadays, with DSLR’s and a variety of lenses, we are able to depict a wide range of focal lengths by using one kind of camera.
So that is why most people on social media may seem to look thinner than they do in person (especially in selfies because the front facing camera on phones especially have short focal lengths).
And that is also how the phrase “the camera adds ten pounds” came about.
this is actually so interesting I had no idea
So which is the “focal length” of human eyes? How do we appear to each other in real life? Or which focal length is closest to what we see ?
i also think intelligence is way too glorified and its seen as like the pinnacle of human worth when traits like compassion and goodness factor way more into our actual decisions+interactions
Apparently not many know this and it’s pretty important information
Hey! Did you know that teenagers rib cages aren’t fully formed! Which means sometimes you get a stabbing pain in your lower side, that’s because the unformed cartilage moved and hit a nerve. If you ever get that, try not to breathe to heavily as it irritates it more
you lifesaver
if this is true thank you
OH MY GOD THATS WHAT THAT IS
oH SO I’M NOT DYING
At 22 I learned that my horrible stabby chest pains were also my ribs! It turns out that sometimes they just kinda… detach and float around. So if you hold your arms above your head and breathe deeply you can pop them back into place.
But if that doesn’t work for you definitely see a doctor about your stabby chest pains. You know. In case it’s your heart
WAIT… SERIOUSLY?!?!?!
The Stanford prison experiment tapes were so stupid when I watched them in AP psych and so stupid when I watch this film about them. Literally they could’ve all sat and played cards and got $15 a day to tell ghost stories all day and be best friends. But masculinity and whiteness and power created this violent irrationality that positioned young ass men to be met with brutality and trauma and disrespect even when it was obviously taken too far. and it makes no sense. If someone put me in a room with Black girls and said I would get paid $90 a day (that’s the equivalent apparently) to be a prison guard, do you know how fast I’d be sitting with them and learning about them and exchanging Instagrams and like.. sleeping.. like what the fuck was the point of any of that…
My psych teacher introduced us to this study and literally before she showed us was like “don’t ever confuse a study based on one type of person (white men/boys) to be an example of an Everyman situation. There is strong evidence that if this was recreated with diversity, or even just with girls, that the results would have been drastically different. This is an example of bias and sexism in the medical research community.”
“Other, more subtle factors also shaped the experiment. It’s often said that the study participants were ordinary guys—and they were, indeed, determined to be “normal” and healthy by a battery of tests. But they were also a self-selected group who responded to a newspaper advertisement seeking volunteers for “a psychological study of prison life.” In a 2007 study, the psychologists Thomas Carnahan and Sam McFarland asked whether that wording itself may have stacked the odds. They recreated the original ad, and then ran a separate ad omitting the phrase “prison life.” They found that the people who responded to the two ads scored differently on a set of psychological tests. Those who thought that they would be participating in a prison study had significantly higher levels of aggressiveness, authoritarianism, Machiavellianism, narcissism, and social dominance, and they scored lower on measures of empathy and altruism.” http://www.newyorker.com/science/maria-konnikova/the-real-lesson-of-the-stanford-prison-experiment
The thing about this study is that whether or not it’s generalizable to the public is debatable at best.
But it’s certainly generalizable to the population of people who tend to be drawn to prison system and law enforcement jobs because that’s exactly the demographics that tend to show up in those positions.
“In my personal experience, women raise their voices because they feel like they aren’t being listened to. Men raise their voices because they feel like they aren’t being obeyed”
I want this tattooed on my face
2016 vs 2017 mood
As a 90′s kid, it blows my mind that origami youtube videos exist. You can look up any model and watch a pair of manicured hands assemble the thing in real time, in full color, in 3D, with cheerful flute music in the background. When I was little, you had a library book with no words and these esoteric little dotted lines and arrows and it was just you, your hands, your paper, and the cruel, uncaring eyes of God.
i bet in elementary school gansey was that kid who said “present” instead of “here” when the teacher was taking attendance
remember in the boat scene in tdt when blue finally told gansey his boat shoes were dumb and he literally had an internal monologue where he was like “these boat shoes are the only thing that make me feel alive”
why waste time chasing a boy when you could be getting good grades and taking care of your skin
thesis: the “song playing from another room” phenomenon appeals threefold to the millenial experience of nostalgia, isolation, and the sensation of eavesdropping on the lives of others via social media and hyper-consumption of culture actively building upon itself at a rapid pace

College can be a lot sometimes. Over the past two years I’ve learned some helpful little tricks that help to keep me sane and on top of things, and it’s time I passed them on to all of you! Ahead in part one: scheduling classes, going to them, and homework. Be on the lookout for part two soon!
i. scheduling classes
Take a full load, but keep it balanced.
Don’t schedule all of the tough classes for one semester.
Also try to schedule it so that you will have a variety of homework (ie a mix of writing, tests, and worksheet focused classes)
Always speak to your advisor before scheduling classes.
Keep in mind that you will need time for homework and online classes when making your schedule.
Whether it means choosing not to have classes on certain days, putting a two hour break in between classes, or having all your classes in the afternoon so you can study in the mornings.
Keep in mind your personality when picking times.
8AMs are rough. Unless you are the world’s biggest morning person, avoid them if you can.
Be sure to have a plan for eating meals!
Some schools will let you bring your lunch into class, but I prefer to have a break during lunch so I can relax while I eat.
Look at a map of campus when scheduling and try to schedule classes in the same building back-to-back, or at least near each other.
ii. classes
Never go to class without a bottle of water and a pen.
If it’s a workday and you’re given the option to leave class and work elsewhere, actually use that time to work.
Sit wherever you’re comfortable. A lot of posts say to sit up front, but I personally prefer to sit further back so that I can fidget without worrying about distracting others. Figure out what works for you.
After about the third class, seats might as well be assigned. Don’t move and throw everyone else off unless you really have to.
Always be respectful and kind to your teachers and classmates.
Make at least one friend in every class. You don’t have to be bffs, but chat with the person you sit beside before every class so that you have someone to study or share notes with if you need to.
If you need to fidget to pay attention, consider bringing a small container of Play-Doh with you to lectures (you may want to let your teacher know what’s up, they’ll almost definitly be cool with it).
iii. homework
Unlike high school, you really can’t skip homework. Instead of getting lots of small worksheets, your grade will be decided by a few bigger projects or papers. Try to stay on top of things!
Break larger projects up into smaller deadlines.
If a class has a lot of worksheets as homework, start a study group so that you can all work on them together.
Try to start homework as soon as you get it.
Don’t be afraid to ask from help from teachers, tutors, or classmates.
As soon as you get a syllabus, enter all of the due dates into your planner. If you wanna go the extra mile (hint: you do), go ahead and add in dates to start working on projects, too.
Work ahead so that you have the flexibility to hang out with your friends at the last minute, instead of being stuck in the library working on a project that’s due first thing in the morning.
Never plagiarize. It’s the fastest way to get kicked out of a class, or even a whole program. If you’re not sure if it needs a citation, it needs a citation.
The number one rule is simple: do all your work, and do it the best you can. As long as you follow that, you’ll be golden.
Happy studying, and be on the lookout for part two coming soon!
Dear Molly,
If I tell you something like “your sense of self is entirely in your own hands,” would you consider that good news or bad news?
Hopefully it’s the first, because it’s true. In the 1960s, this dude named Daryl Bem came up with the theory of self-perception. Maybe that should be capitalized. The Theory of Self Perception. Anyway, it’s a theory of attitude formation. Maybe that should also be capitalized. Attitude Formation.
Regardless of capitalization, it’s a theory that says that our sense of self is formed by our actions, not the other way around. I know that seems counter intuitive. We think, for instance, that if you’re an inherently brave human, you do brave things. But Bem’s theory of self perception says it’s the other way around: If you do a brave thing, you think of yourself as a brave person.
I can hear the crusty sound of your eyes rolling, but wait up, listen, it holds water as a theory. Let’s imagine you’re afraid to hang-glide because you think of yourself as a cowardly person. Now imagine your friends badger you into the hang-gliding anyway. You do it, and you’re successful, even though you didn’t choose it for yourself. Now you’ve done this brave thing, and you decide maybe you were wrong, you actually are a brave person. Subsequently you begin to think of yourself as someone brave. Later, you tell the story of hang-gliding to a stranger later, and their eyes widen — you’re so fearless, they say. Yes, you think to yourself. I guess I am! The story is confirmed — the story you have told yourself about yourself.
But you’re not wrong. You are what you do. Tell a story about yourself, you become that story. Good or bad.
What does this have to do with your question? Maybe you’ve already figured it out. If you decide to go digging to find out who you are, all you’ll find is an empty hole waiting to be filled with something real. Who you are isn’t a concrete entity waiting to be uncovered. You don’t have to wistfully think, I wish I was a gentler person, but I’m just not: you can decide to be a gentler person. You don’t have to sigh and say, I wish I was braver: you can do brave things and you will grow into them. You don’t have to say: I wish I was more bad ass — you can just buy yourself a damn big pair of black boots and some good sunglasses and live the bad ass life until you’re there.
Here’s the long story of how I did this very thing myself. No, it doesn’t happen overnight, and no, it’s not always easy. I guess that’s why they call it character-building.
urs,
Stiefvater
