Honestly? Honestly the idea of Ilya Rozanov sitting himself down at twelve years old and saying I have GOT to get out of this country. It killed my mother. It's going to kill me. And then growing up a little bit and realizing some Things about himself and saying I have GOT to get out of this country. I have tried and tried and for some reason people keep Knowing What I Am. Ilya, young bisexual man with an apparently pretty clocky affect to his speaking voice. A strong young man with a natural and lovely flamboyance in him, a sweetness he tries to smother and the ability to play hockey like it was bestowed upon him by GOD. I've GOT to get out of here, he thinks to himself. And then he leaves (but not really) does some more growing up and he falls in love only he can't let himself be in love because the lead weight of this country is still tied to him and he thinks I have GOT TO GET OUT OF HERE. Then his father dies and the man he loves says "Come with me" and Ilya says I am NEVER going back!! I will wear my mother's cross and I will think of her every day and she will forgive me for never visiting her grave because her beautiful boy got OUT. I will go to a place where I am loved by a man A MAN who I love more than I ever thought I was allowed. Who holds my face and my hands and my heart. I will find a home for myself in his arms. I will never go fucking back.
Darcyâs introduction in Pride and Prejudice is really âwhat if you had just had the worst month of your life because your ex-bestie tried to lover boy scam your baby sister out of her share of your dadâs life insurance and your friend dragged you to a shitty party in a dive bar in the neighbourhood where heâd just signed a short term lease, and you decided to let your bad mood show because you were never going to see any of the assholes in this stupid shitty bar EVER again. And your friend ended up making out with a girl heâd just met there while you were stuck talking to her sister who was less cute and then her mother appeared and started trying to matchmake and started saying how if she was twenty years younger sheâd clime you like a redwood and ooooh is that a black Amex, guess the next round is on you hahhahahahaha, while her other sister (how many fucking sisters does she have?!) flashed an obviously fake ID at the bar and ordered six vodka-diet red bulls and no one in her family except the less-cute sister even tried to stop her. And you went home and consoled yourself that you would never see any of these people again but then you met them over and over again because they live next door and your friend and the cute sister keep meeting up to make out but not actually date and then. You fall in love with the less-cute sister because it turns out sheâs really witty and charismatic but she already knows and remembers and resents the fact that on a day when you were in a shitty mood you called her mid out loud in a dive bar.â
and this is why we need a P&P adaptation from Darcy's POV.
I hope fic writers know theyâre the reason someoneâs heart feels a little less heavy today.

â Marmalade (2024) + Letterboxd reviews
I think a lot of what makes fanfiction so magical is writers taking the time to explore tiny elements that were imagined into existence in the source material and then abandoned. It's the deep dive into that t-shirt, the forgotten gift, the nickname, the spare key, the anger they swallowed down, the trauma they supressed, the love they denied, the story that wasn't mainstream enough to make it. It's the little things getting their moment to shine and I fucking love that and I will fight for it always.
You know that idealized version of yourself that haunts you with guilt about what you haven't yet become?
They didn't show up.
They don't deserve your praise.
The you who is reading this made it here, despite everything.
This you is the garden worthy of your love and effort.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT ONE DIRECTION I DONâT KNOW WHO THIS âHARRYâ PERSON IS GO WATCH BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND CLARENCE CLEMONS KISS ON STAGE RIGHT NOW
op is the only valid person iâve ever met. everyone else needs to come to the light
Okay, but this is really important: Bruce Springsteen occupied this really weird place in music history. His songs were all from this pessimistic, nihilistic view of an America that had let him down:
Just like the anti-Vietnam War protest songs that we associate with the 1960s, or the early nihilism that spawned punk music in the 1970s. But he didnât *sound* like a punk anarchist; he sounded like a country rock singer. When he released Born in the U.S.A. people completely misinterpreted (or possibly ignored) the lyrics in favor of the tone of the music.
Politicians used his music to promote their âMurica Yes! brand, and he had to literally explain that that was not what he was about. Heâs over here asking when weâre going to have jobs and heathcare, not stanning the politicians who werenât helping the people.
It was also kind of a big deal that he had an integrated band, because even as late as the 1980s music was still kind of segregated and MTV was straight up racist. They refused to play and promote black artists and then claimed that were no black artists in the first place. Michael Jacksonâs record company had to threaten a boycott of their white artists to get MTV to play his Thriller video.
Plus, the first black/white interracial kiss on TV was in 1968 (OG Star Trek). Also it took us until the 70s to get sympathetic gay characters on screen, and the 90s to get gay characters to kiss onscreen. And all of those firsts were met with outrage.
So keep that in mind when you see Bruce Springsteen not just playing with an interracial band, but engaging in an interracial, gay kiss on stage repeatedly.
Passages from American Popular Music by Larry Starr and Christopher Waterman
I used to think that Bruce and Clarence kissing onstage was exuberance, showmanship, and telling racist homophobes to fuck off. Like, they picked up a certain kind of audience and went âRacist homophobes? Not in our house!â And started the kissing then but then I actually looked it up and

It was a story where⊠we remade the city. We remade the city, shaping it into the kind of place where our friendship and our love for one another wouldnât have been such an exceptional thing. - Bruce Springsteen
It wasnât about showmanship or rejecting bigots or anything it was just. Damn right that was one of the loves of his life and damn right he was going to kiss him onstage
It gets me a little that Bruce has had a divorce, that heâs been married twice, but he loved Clarence for the rest of Clarenceâs life and will presumably love him the rest of his own
Clemons said in one interview. âBruce and I looked at each other and didnât say anything, we just knew. We knew we were the missing links in each otherâs lives. He was what Iâd been searching for.â In another version of the story, Clemons says âHe looked at me, and I looked at him, and we fell in love.â
Iâm having some emotions about it!
âHe was elemental in my life,â Springsteen adds, âand losing him was like losing the rain.â
Not just! I love you pure and deep and true but! I am going to love you like that in front of the whole damn world!
We have fewer narratives about taking risks and making statements for platonic love rather than romantic and supposedly it would be easier to downplay this onstage than romance and! They refused! They fucking refused! In front of hundreds of thousands of people, over the course of years! In the spotlight, in word and deed, I love you!
God Iâm not okay about it
Now Iâm mad that this is not among any of the things I was ever told about this artist.
I knew about this in general (& via all those fabulous photos), but this just adds even more beautiful context <3
Just to add to the pile: this was the cover of Springsteenâs break-through album Born to Run, in 1975:
I mean, will you LOOK at this:
This was the pic chosen for the album cover from an extensive photoshoot, too. A few others:
Thereâs a lot more online if you search. Theyâre all pretty amazing. But the photographer is right, the one chosen for the album cover just pops.

Wayne Munson observes Steve at Eddieâs bedside during his coma. When Eddie awakes, heâs extremely confused.
EXCERPT:
âContrary to popular belief, Wayne Munson wasnât a judgmental man.
His philosophy coined long ago as âThe Munson Doctrineâ started first and foremost with minding your business. Someoneâs got an issue with you? Avoid them. Someoneâs queer? And that someone is your nephew? Cool. Not your life. Let him do whatever he wants.â

Look:
I need a George of the Jungle sequel with Joe Keery playing George Jr. Really, anything with Joe Keery playing Brendan Fraser's son, but his ability to do physical comedy would be perfect for George of the Jungle.
There is absolutely not a link to a HD copy of Marmalade below the cut,
definitely not one of those down there.

Damn, itâs been a minute. If youâre still here youâre amazing. A special thanks to Eddie Munson for getting me out of my nearly year long art slump but an even bigger thanks to @butyoudidthis4what for always supporting and encouraging me through lifeâs highs and lows.
