I saw a comment on a completely unrelated post saying that it was awful to care about this thing when Palestine. And someone else agreeing with them. That no one should care about anything whatsoever other than Palestine.

I really need people to pay attention to this, especially when we see stuff like Queers For Palestine openly blocking the procession of Pride parades and stuff in order to talk over LGBT folks who would be murdered in places like Palestine for speaking up.

There is no such thing as an omnicause. And obviously, just because they're homophobic doesn't mean they deserve to be war crimed. But, the fact that they are homophobic is a problem, and LGBT activists should not be expected to cater to people who want them dead, in their homeland, in their events.

I am Canadian and this has happened in Canada multiple times. Karl Popper said it best - we cannot tolerate intolerance, and unfortunately Canada has a big habit of doing this because we foolishly believe that we are accepting "everyone," including the people who want us dead.

The people who say that LGBT and Palestine causes should co-exist are basically correct, they should co-exist - to some degree. War crimes are wrong, murder is wrong. But where I do not coexist as an LGBT person is when the Palestine cause is being used to silence LGBT people, speak over us, or tell us that we have no place in their activism.

Don't tell us we can co-exist with you and then tell us to shut the fuck up or justify our murder in the same breath.

What I realised recently is that... Actually, the world doesn't care about decolonisation. When we entered this conversation, we did so with a naïve belief that colonised culture must prevail, that it must be cherished and guarded. But in truth, which colonised culture is cherished, huh? The only culture that is cherished - is the culture of former empires.

And when we start talking about russians as imperialists, and that this is not right to cherish russian ballet, etc, etc - we receive this huge backlash. Bc this topic is extremely unpopular. Bc 'five o'clock tea' and 'God save the queen', and corsets, and Shakespeare are the GREAT British culture we all must cherish while tribal South African holidays or beliefs are considered primitive, down-earth, undeveloped. Seriously, how many films have you seen dedicated to South African culture? And how many are dedicated to the Victorian/Edwardian/Colonisation period in England?

Yeah, we might believe that colour blindness made all people equal, but in fact poc people are forced to cherish the coloniser's culture when their own culture is silenced. And nobody wants to talk about it bc it's uncomfortable. Bc nobody wants to admit that coloniser's culture won and is considered more... how to put it? More 'intellectual', 'refined', 'interesting'?

This topic is taboo. So when we, Ukrainians, talk about russian Colonisation - nobody wants to hear that. Does anyone want to hear what Native Americans have to say? And why is there no Native American president? Heck, why USA don't celebrate Native holidays on the government level at very least? If the world were so progressive about De-coloni-sation we'd have at least that!

So, it's not even about 'moral purity', this rabbit hole is much, MUCH deeper than that.

Yes. The main course is to integrate colonised people into the coloniser's culture to the level where you won't even notice how much from the natives was either stripped or forgotten. That's why Ukrainians are often asked things like... "Why do you even care if you're Ukrainian or russian? Why do you even care what language you speak? Why do you even care if these lands are russian or Ukrainian?" Yes, why do we even care? What a mystery! But most importantly, if Ukraine succeed in decolonisation of its territories right now, in this war, if it shows the example of how everyone should fight for their national identity and their lands no matter what, then... Scotland, Ireland, Wales... USA, Australia, New Zealand, China, Canada, russian federation, etc. - many, MANY uncomfortable processes might start there. Because, you see, colonised people are not supposed to fight for their identity. They are supposed to be sad, poor, humble victims.

And yeah, okay, let's all be cosmopolitan. We're all humankind, Earthians, one big family, etc, etc. But who rules in the family? Whose worldview is considered acceptable and who's outcast? And how did it happen that colonised nations' worldview is ostracised? The cosmopolitan idea is good on the surface and imperialistic at its core.

Olympic committees are really doing everything they can to make Ukraine look like a country without symbols — like a “neutral country” — instead of countries like Russia and Belarus, which should be in that role but are currently competing under their national symbols.

I want to say — then ban Ukrainian bodies altogether.

One of the most routine Jew-hating canards I've seen about the ongoing war is that "Israel is committing a genocide because there are 19,000 dead children, and that's all the proof I need!"

Okay.

First, let me get the requisite statement of "any dead child is a tragedy" made, because that's true.

Now I want to break this down to get past the emotional appeals and show why it's antisemitic libel.

This "argument" (in quotation marks because it's just an emotional appeal) is usually framed in the "Israel is deliberately targeting children out of sheer bloodlust and cruelty."

If that was the case, however...

Half of the Gaza Strip's population is under 18. The death toll is, at present, approximately 60,000 after 700 days.

If the IDF was deliberately and preferentially killing children in the Gazan population, then you'd expect that the number of dead children would be more than 50% of the death toll.

It's not.

Instead, it's less than a third.

Which can only argue that the IDF is deliberately going out of its way to avoid killing children.

The fact that they haven't managed to keep it lower is down to a few facts:

Hamas uses children and civilian infrastructure as human shields, and there have been numerous times when the only way to get at them is through, which is on them.

Hamas uses child soldiers, and an indoctrinated 17-year-old with a gun is still an enemy militant, even as they're also a child death in the statistics.

Hamas has deliberately cultivated a culture of martyrdom in the Gaza Strip in order to have people be willing to put their children into harm's way in the hope of harming an Israeli.

Hamas and other militant groups have killed a fair number of Palestinian children themselves (from misfired rockets that hit Palestinian homes or just shooting the children themselves).

But this canard/emotional appeal has to ignore all of that and basically paint the IDF as cruel and deliberately going out of their way to kill children in order to make them into the Ultimate Evil.

Meanwhile, pretty much none of the people spouting this canard care about the 25,000 children dead in the Syrian Civil War, or the half million children dead in the Sudan Civil War.

Just Israel and Gaza.

And the reason for that fixation is pretty damn clear.

Something can be bad without being a genocide.

Something can be a valid object of criticism without being a genocide.

The use of that word is tactical, not truthful. Skeptical voices must be deemed "genocide deniers" or "genocide supporters". It needs to be black and white, or this tactic wouldn't work. The accusation must be so vile that even pleading down to regular war crimes would be deemed a moral stain.

It needs to be bad enough to make sure every Israeli and every Jew would be forever suspect of the centuries old canard of deliberately harming children.

This is why the burden of proof lies with the claimant. To avoid that dynamic, specifically. A valid criticism would be to explain what Israel could do (but isn't doing) to prevent these deaths without compromising legitimate military needs. A valid criticism would acknowledge that these children are victimized first and foremost by a culture that considers them more valuable as props than as human beings, and would acknowledge that under these circumstances, child death is literally unavoidable. A valid criticism would recognize that reacting to this death exactly like Hamas wants us to... only encourages more child death.

These 19,000 children deserved better than to be props. Understanding the full tragedy of their loss should call on us to do more than to sensationalize it and use it as a cudgel. And that's without even questioning the figures' veracity.

Cowspiracy is such an awful documentary a minute in and the narrator compares keeping animals to "what the Nazis did to jewish people". I've never seen earthlings but I've read reviews and one said ‘An hour of meaningless animal Gore’ + the director Shaun Monson is a piece of shit and made a comment that if you date someone and you show them his doc and they don't become vegan you should dump them. He's like this hippy "we are all earthlings and equal"

Cowspiracy’s “facts” have been debunked so many times over and over again but it remains the standard source for “why you should be vegan uwu”

The by-line on the deconstruction is Joshua Finch, not Allan Savory.  And a single article from last year (which admittedly does not seem to necessarily be from a radveeg perspective, but does seem to be from one that takes the notion of ruminants being—by their very nature—purely detrimental to the environment entirely at face value) hardly constitutes a recent, significant, or even objective loss of credibility.

There’s also a lot of criticism of the article on the comments section.  Hell, one of the critics apparently has ties to the Sierra Club.

Allan Savory is an ecologist who’s drawn some conclusions—based on first-hand observation—that not only are ruminants not purely and inherently detrimental to the environment, but can actually be managed in such a way as to be beneficial. 

Not exactly an unreasonable stance, right? 

Well, be that as it may: it’s a controversial stance even among other professionals.  And the usual vegan peanut gallery, predictably, think that he must be an industry shill.  (Ironically, I’ve seen these same vegans take the pro-CAFO report Livestock’s Long Shadow at face value.  Hell, here’s one insisting that cattle will kill the world…in the very same post in which they claim that cattle released into former buffalo territory would slip neatly into the appropriate niche and facilitate rewilding.

It should also be noted that Savory is not the author of the Cowspiracy critique.  The author is one Joshua Finch, who simply thinks that Savory has a point.

In the wake of 9/11 and in the quarter century since, Muslims in the West have suffered from utterly atrocious levels of Islamophobia. I won’t ever deny that or defend it. It is unconscionable and should be seen as abhorrent as any other kind of racism.

What that doesn’t mean is that we should overcorrect and view any criticism of extremist Islamism as racist. Islam is a religion, one followed by almost 2 billion people worldwide. Islamism is an extreme political ideology, one that uses Islam as an excuse for the appalling horrors they commit. They are not the same.

And the thing is, the people who are most victimised by Islamists, by far, *are* the millions of Muslims living in the countries where they wield the most power, some who very courageously speak out and resist and try to expose the horrific crimes committed against their populations, only to be met mostly with silence and indifference.

Conflating criticism of extremist ideology and terrorism with Islamophobia silences the voices of ordinary Muslims suffering under these regimes, and makes a mockery of their bravery.
