"nothing is real atoms never touch each other youve never touched anything in your life" ok. well when i pet my dog he is soft and when he licks my hand it is wet and that is far more real to me than whatevers going on at an atomic level
nuclei don't touch, but the nucleus is not the core of reality. reality is made of electrons dancing. reality is made of bonds.
you pet your dog and the atoms that are you brush up against the atoms that are him, and the electrons that are you press into the electrons that are him, and both of them change their movement.
electrons of course are not really particles and do not really move.
you pet your dog and the electron-orbitals of your skin overlap with the electron-orbitals of his fur, and both are changed by the contact. you are not made of little motes floating alone in a void. you are a single unfathomable chord formed of a trillion vibrations, and so is he. and the note you play is changing at every moment by what you touch and how you breathe, and so is his. and atoms do not really have edges, and to touch is to interact, and when you put your hand on your dog the universe does not know that you are separate. the song expands to hold you both.
celestial objects at incredible distances perturb each other's orbits - things absolutely don't need to be touching each other to affect each other, everything is affecting everything
The apocalypse has come and gone, and against all odds, Pharloom remains standing. The time has come for Hornet to return to Hallownest, accompanied by friends and allies: Shakra hopes to explore the mythical land beyond the wastes, and properly lay to rest a member of her own tribe; Lace fears unraveling without the aid of a Weaver, while contending with the immensity of a future free of her mother’s threads; and the Green Prince lives only only to spite the Citadel, passively seeking a more honorable end than might be found in the rubble of his homeland.
Meanwhile, Hornet returns from Pharloom with magic and knowledge that might aid in the slow recovery of Hallownest and Deepnest–and perhaps offer the chance to call home the sibling she once thought lost to her forever.
Chapter 9: Trust Treads the Line Between Wisdom and Folly
[<<Prev] [Chapter 9] [Next>>]
We're just gonna... detour away from whatever conversation the Green Prince is having with the Mantis Lord. Don't worry, it's a secret tool that'll help us later. Instead, we get a conversation between Hornet and Vise about the distance between gods and mortals.
My beta readers were MVPs this chapter (and every chapter). I just wholesale cribbed how @sandflakedraws portrays playing a harp in their webcomic, The Touch of Sunlight. And if you're wondering what's going on with Hollow's cloak in the flashback sequences, snowleopardferret made a diagram over on Bluesky about proper vessel care and husbandry.

Vise: ...Auntie? Do you think me a fool?
Hornet: At times. But I consider it one of your better qualities.
Hornet: .... *sigh*
Hornet: You wish to know why I did not speak for myself against the Prince's accusations. Had you witnessed the devastation wrought upon his lands, I doubt you would be so quick to come to my defense.
Vise: ...but you--
Hornet: Your personal affection for I and my kin blinds you to our imminence.
Hornet: You think us benign... benevolent even.. you may even be correct.
Hornet: However.
Page 2
Hornet: As a prospective leader of this tribe, it is imperative you never forget--
Vise: !?
Vise: !!!
Hornet: A god's blessing is oft indistinguishable from its curse.
Vise: !!!
SFX: snap snap snap
Vise: ....
Vise: ...though a fool in full I may seem, I have met with ill intent throughout my life, and know well the tenor of spite...
Page 3
Vise: My confidence is not so easily won.
Vise: I give my trust not to some great and mighty god...
Vise: But to the warrior who willingly sacrificed body and mind to stay a plague...
Vise: ...and to the sister who wept...
Vise: ...and toiled...
Vise: ...to see them whole.
Vise: You proffered kindness to an orphaned traitor's child...
Vise: Do you deny it now?
Hornet: ...no.
Vise: Then I shall gladly risk playing the fool, to keep your wisdom and council, Auntie.
Vise: A final question, if I may be so bold--
Page 4
Vise: The Lady... Is she truly so terrible?
Hornet: ....
Hornet: ...she is a being both ancient and alien, whose survival oft necessitates indifference or cruelty.
Hornet: But in equal parts has sure sought to reject that nature. Imperfectly... Tragically... Time and time again... she chooses to love.

Lace: To what do I owe this audience, your majesty?
The White Lady: There is no occasion...
The White Lady: ...merely surprise to find you apart from your friends.
Lace: My companion is skilled in song and scrivening, but unlike some... I find no entertainment watching ink dry... so I sought to create my own.
Lace: I fear this serenity will leave dull both I and my pin.
The White Lady: It would be a shame to blunt such keenness, when for so long my Gardens have felt the loss of their protector.
Lace: There were none to assume the mantle of Hollow the Knight?
The White Lady: No.
The White Lady: ....
The White Lady: they were never mine.
Page 6
The White Lady: I speak of Dryya of the Five... one of the Great Knights of that Kingdom Gone.
The White Lady: Fierce and wise was she... though with your skill, I could see you her apprentice, if not her peer.
The White Lady: ....
The White Lady: ...you intend to accompany the Gendered Child to Deepnest, do you not?
The White Lady: I would urge caution. Danger lurks beyond my verge--
Lace: Please. Spare me your condescension.
Lace: Do you issue the spider such inane warnings? Or is this concern exclusive to one such as I?
Lace: I was spun to life in the Weavers' Cradle-- I will not shrink from whatever poor imitation exists in these lands.
man sometimes friendship really is just "I saw this and knew it would give you psychic damage. please respond with agony" and then they do. and it's great
one time I went over to a friend's house and their housemate was making paper in the living room, and we saw this big tub full of water they were using to dissolve old scrap paper into a slurry, and everyone was immediately like "oh, you need scrap paper?" and started turning out their jacket pockets and producing expired coupons and bus tickets and crumpled receipts and old shopping lists and whatever else they'd been carrying round with them for no good reason, and passing it all to the paper-making housemate to make sure it was suitable before it got torn up and dropped into the tub, while people took turns stirring the slurry with a big wooden stick. it was strangely ritualistic, like presenting an offering to some kind of temple elder for inspection before placing it in a watery shrine to be devoured and reformed. pulp for the pulp god.
Legolas saying ‘this city needs more trees’ is actually so valid. Not only from an environmental and social well-being point of view, but Gondor has one very important tree with very few fellows and therefore restricted access to nutrients, so the extended mycorrhizal network more trees would provide actively enhances the welfare of the white tree and symbolically the spirit of the nation. In this essay I will
the most disorienting thing thats ever happened to me was when a linguistics major stopped in the middle of our conversation, looked me in the eye, and said, "you have a very interesting vernacular. were you on tumblr in 2014?" and i had to just stand there and process that one for a good ten seconds
#i was in a car with a linguist i had never met before the car trip and like half an hour in he looked at me#after i finished describing a geology thing that was happening out the window and asked if i'd ever spent much time on tumblr#the fuckor of it all#and then we spent six more hours driving#it sure does leave linguistic markers! i'm not sure i'm good with it (tags via @thoughtsformtheuniverse)
Oh! @meret118 see above comment! The use of the word "enjoyers" instead of "users" or "bloggers" -> You left a comment a while back asking, "Does this just mean vocabulary words? Other than blorbo and sweet cinnamon roll etc, I can't think of what a Tumblr accent would be." I almost never see anyone use the word "enjoyer" anywhere outside of tumblr, but I see it on tumblr fairly frequently.
Another one is the verb "perceive" i.e. "don't perceive me" "I am perceiving" "I am being percieved." That's something that feels very specific to tumblr parlance.
There's the thing where people on tumblr have an emotional reaction to something and instead of, or in addition to telling you how they feel about it using emotion words, they will narrate a fictional action in the present progressive tense. "I am gnawing at the bars of my enclosure "I am kissing you on the mouth" "you are going into the soup" "you are getting all of the awards"
I once saw someone use that response format in ... I think it was a restaurant review, or a doordash review, or something like that. It was very unexpected seeing it outside of a tumblr post.
There are a lot of other tumblr linguistic quirks I can't currently remember off the top of my head, but I'll instantly recognize them if I see/hear them outside of tumblr. It's always a bit startling to see them out of context.
when I was in university one of my modules was about internet slang and for our grades project we had to compile and analyse a small database of 100 words used by a specific community of our choice. I chose tumblr and that's how I stumbled across Gretchen McCulloch's research and discovered that yes not only did tumblr have its own vernacular and syntax (as @lierdumoa demonstrates), it was at the time a crucible of slang and memes probably unrivalled by any other part of the internet. and it's stayed that way! even the very title is McCulloch's book because internet is an example of this specific phraseology.
sadly my project is lost due to the website being wiped from the university database after graduation and my then laptop having a major hardware failure. backup your backups people! but the crux of the entire module was that the internet is full of communities using language not only as jargon for specific purpose but also to signal membership in said community. I even wrote a bit about non capitalisation and punctuation useage as a visual cue on tumblr and how including information in the reblog body or the tags indicated different levels of importance or intimacy of thought
I am holding the side of your face and looking deep in your eyes and telling you that love is stored in the syntax, and that we are rotating words together all at once as we all nod at their new and baffling meanings. if the devils sacrament be tumblr then the devils gospel is our collective voice. thanks for coming to my tedtalk

A world where humans have no innate magic but our pets do.
Cat magic is pretty raw and they mainly use it for getting into places they're not supposed to. They can be trained if you're patient, and will sometimes do favours for their owners out if the blue, but only if they want to.
Dogs have been bred for specific magic over the centuries and each breed can do certain things. Showing off your magic is an essential part of a dog show.
Horses come in horse, pegasus, and unicorn, each with their own magical talents.
Fuck knows what birds can do, I don't trust birds.
For an obvious example... dalmatians have been bred for fire magic. A properly trained dalmatian will run into a burning building and all the fires around it will go out. Caution is necessary, of course, because they can also do the opposite. Their favourite toys are often a bit blackened, and puppies must be kept in fireproof surroundings, with extinguishers in easy reach.
The Pekingese' magic is camouflage - they can change colour to match whatever they touch, whether a blanket, a mossy rock, or even a reflective mirror. This ability originally enabled them to hide in a robe, so their owners could take them into places where dogs were technically not permitted. The classic image of a pekingese is of it sitting outside a building, appearing to be part of the stonework... until it reveals itself to growl at an intruder.
Portuguese water dogs are canine silkies - in deep enough water they transform into curly-haired seals, and when they climb back out and shake off, they turn back into dogs.
sometimes your dog brings you home a fae husband and thats ok
(warning for discussion of old dogs and the potential of their death but no one dies.)
Socks is a good dog. He’s bright and happy and alerts me to the mailman who has taken to not knocking on my door and instead waits until Socks gives a bark that would sound more at home coming out of a bigger dog than my Papillon mix and when I open the door the mailman always smiles at me like he knows something I don’t as he hands me my package.
I try not to question the Canada Post workers, they always seem to know more than they should. The mailman is nice, but I don’t trust the way he eyes me as though he’s waiting for something to happen. He had asked about Socks once, wondering what my dog is mixed with because while Socks has those lovely ears Papillon’s are known for he is also big. Bigger than he should be.
The mailman seems convinced that Socks is a Sheltie and I don’t know enough either way but all the vets I’ve taken him to agree. They also warn me that Shelties tend to be gateway dogs, leading their herd through portals to take them where they need to be. I have never seen Socks open a portal, but I know that the attraction magic from his Papillon side is strong. I always seem to stumble upon something that I need when I need it, and I always make sure to give Socks extra snuggles and treats after that.
He’s a good dog, he cares for me the only way he knows how; by trying to help. He sits by my side when I’m sad and crawls into my lap on a particularly bad pain day. He warns me when whatever creatures that lurk in the Canadian Wilderness venture too close to comfort and has brought me enough charms to ward against whatever is out there that my house is full of them.
Socks is a good dog, but he is old and blind in one eye - the consequence of an infection that the vets caught too late - and I know that he knows he’s old too. He stretches more nowadays, spends more time curled up by my feet and yet whenever we venture outside he is joyous. Running through the leaves of fall and digging in the dirt as though he is a puppy again.
I’ve had him since he was six months old. He is almost twelve now and I’ve promised him I will be with him till the end. He has watched over me since I was twelve, the least I can do is promise that I will be there for however long he has left. Socks might be a mutt, but he is my mutt and I would promise him anything he wanted.
I think he knows this sometimes, because he looks at me like he wants to say something, like he knows that he will leave me and that he doesn’t want me to be alone. I haven’t been alone since I got him, he has been a constant companion for more than a decade and so I reassure him at times that no matter how far away I am from people I will be fine.
I don’t think he believes me. In fact I know he doesn’t believe me, there isn’t much I can say to change his mind. He’s old and grumpy and set in his ways but I want to make sure he knows that when he’s gone I’ll be fine.
I always am.
-
The mailman doesn’t come, or Socks doesn’t alert me to him, which is odd because Socks always wakes me up before the mailman comes.
Today he hasn’t and my heart leaps to my throat. I know Socks is old but there is something different between knowing your dog is old and knowing that they will die. I stumble out of bed, not bothering to put on pants as I notice that Socks isn’t on the bed with me and as I race my way downstairs I notice he isn’t in his bed in the living room either.
My throat constricts, I want to scream, where is my dog? I tear my house apart, not once thinking of the vets and mailman that told me that my dog was part Sheltie - a portal dog - and when Socks doesn’t appear I panic.
Tears threaten to blur my vision and I try to remember to take deep breaths. Just when I feel more centered something splits open the atoms in my living room. I blink as the crack - dark as the night sky and twinkling with stars - twists and spreads.
I grab my broom as the portal widens and ripples. If something stole my dog I’m going to kill a bitch-
The thought of violence ends as a man walks through the portal with Socks nipping at his heels.
“I’m going,” The man scowls, his voice like a summer storm, “Stop nipping at me dog! I’m going to see your Mistress-”
I debate hitting the man on the head with my broom, but Socks barks one of his high and happy notes and his tail begins wagging furiously as he trots over to me. He sits at my feet and stares up at me with his tail still wagging as if to say ‘I did good! Gimme treat!’.
I don’t know what’s happening, but I put the broom down and reach into the treat container on a bookshelf to grab a treat for my dog.
“You shouldn’t reward him,” the man scowls and I ignore him as I hand Socks a bone, “He ruined my party!”
The portal has snapped shut behind the man. Socks no longer seems interested in him as he gnaws at the small bone I gave him.
“He’s fourteen inches tall,” I tell the man who is most decidedly not human. His eyes are too green, too bright and his skin shimmers as though made of gold, “Your party wasn’t very good if Socks could ruin it.”
The man scowls but doesn’t say anything. For a while the only sound comes from Socks chewing on the bone I gave him.
Then the man looks me up and down and laughs.
“Where are your pants?”
Heat flushes to my cheeks and I pick up a throw pillow and throw it at him.
He laughs some more and I scowl, crossing my arms and wondering why Socks brought this man back.
“Why are you here anyway?” I ask him as his laughter dies down, “I refuse to believe my dog bullied you here.”
“You’re right,” The man who I am rapidly thinking is Fae says, “Lord Socks didn’t ‘bully’ me here. I came here willingly.”
“For what?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” The mans smile is charming and familiar and I hate it. He’s truly too beautiful, it’s unfair. “I came here to propose. Your animal seems to think you’ll be lonely when he’s gone and I’ve always had a fondness for humans.”
“We just met.”
“You don’t seem too annoyed by that.”
“Oh I am.” Expressing emotions have never been my strong suit but I am nervous and and pissed off and still without pants. “Why should I accept?”
“You’ll have a family,” the man says, “You’ll never have to struggle again. I’ll make sure of it.” There’s a dark promise in his words and he reminds me more and more of a boy I knew in childhood, a boy that promised he’d stay by me but left anyway.
I shake those thoughts from my head. It doesn’t matter what happened to Bree. He’s long gone.
The fae in front of me though, his offer is tempting. As much as I hate to admit it I do like being around people, I like talking to others and sharing interests. I like people no matter whether they are human or not.
“I’ll make a deal,” I tell him, “Try to convince me the merits of life Underhill in four months. If you fail to make it sound appealing to my mortal self then I stay here.”
Socks whines at that and I hate ignoring him but I do.
Something interested sparks in the mans eyes as I speak. He likes contests I note.
“And if I win?” The man sounds amused. “Do I get you as my bride?”
“Yes,” I tell him, “I’ll even let you make me a faerie if you want to.”
The promise of forever seems to ignite something in him and his eyes glow brilliant and fierce for a moment.
“Then let it be done,” he says, “On my name and crown I let this contest be judged by the earth and air, by the rivers and flames, may the winner be just and may no lies cross their lips once judgment falls.”
I blink and stagger backward, the air growing heavy with magic around me and for the first time since he was a puppy I hear Socks growl at someone.
I don't think FFXV is dead. Rather it's a niche fandom that you have to find. Fans are still creating fanfics, art and even video edits. It's not popular like it used to be but that happens with all video games, especially with FFs.
Leviathan looks like an overgrown snake-thingy because technically she is! in that she is an ascended Goa'uld. but she's not one of the System Lords or anything like that. nope.
alright, let's backtrack a bit.
stargate lore has it that Ra was the one who found Earth and humans, and the first one to take a human as a host. afterwards, most of his fellows took humans as hosts. this decision was influenced by several factors such as the humans being easier to heal and modify genetically, that some of them could interface with Alteran technology and, critically, because the symbionts could completely dominate the host.
unlike their original host species, meaning the unas.
now, when we see the Goa'uld original homeworld in that one episode, it looks like unas and symbiotes both still live there. but they were blasted back to the Stone Age.
so what I think happened in canon and what definitely happened in my fic idea is that not everyone wanted humans are hosts. some symbiotes didn't want hosts like that and some unas weren't keen on sharing either. so there was a civil war, so to speak, with Ra and his faction emerging victorious.
Leviathan was one of those symbiotes who stayed with her una host and fought against Ra. when it became clear that her side would lose, she basically sabotaged what shit she could, grabbed what human slaves she managed to smuggle out then packed all of them onto a barely-working ha'tak and flew off in a random direction.
they landed on Eos.
the ha'tak had to be scrapped. both because they needed materials to construct more a permanent settlement there and frankly because it was unsalvageable at that point. they knew where the gate was - it was very obvious to the scanners - and deliberately settled on the other side of the planet from it. if anyone ever came through, they would not be noticed for many years.
eventually, the people there realised that there are beings living on this world that... aren't quite physical. but definitely there. and the humans interacted with then sometimes (with mixed results) and tried to learn more about them. and maybe some humans started to worship some of the beings too. the ones who were more benign, more inclined to help, even if only out of curiosity.
(maybe some of the humans tried to fuck the weird beings)
and that's how several religions were born. after millennia all of that would coalesce, with bigger or smaller difficulties, into the worship of the Hexatheon.
but that's for later.
beforehand, Leviathan's host would grow sick and die during the long travel through the space. she would leave her dying friend's body and, refusing to take another host from among the humans, she would be sealed inside a canopic jar to wait out the remainder of the journey. once the humans find Eos, one of them would take that jar, carry it to the sea and let Leviathan out so she might spend the remainder of her days exploring the waters of this place that shall be their new home.
but Eos is a place where the Veil is see-through at times.
the humans knew who broke their chains and led them to a safe refuge when they were dispossessed. the humans told the stories of those events, to themselves and then to their children and to their children's children. some of those children started praying to Leviathan, to the Serpent, raising shrines and temples and statues in Her name.
Eos is a place where the Veil is see-through.
Leviathan does not die as all symbiotes without a sarcophagus eventually do.
Leviathan grows older and grows bigger and grows stronger.
Leviathan grows into something that isn't as mortal as she used to be.
tagging @hamelin-born @charlottedabookworm @ertrunkenerwassergeist and @cactusprisms in case any of you is still interested in this
It's going to break so many fucking brains in SGC once somebody sees the artwork of Leviathan in all Her serpentine glory!
Fun fact! While Leviathan of course has a boatload of epithets and titles She accumulated over some seven millennia (give or that a few centuries), the absolutely oldest ones found in records are Breaker of Chains, Defender of the Dispossessed and the Serpent in the Shadows.
And in those ancient carvings She was sometimes depicted as a normal-sized serpent wrapped around and biting a hawk.
Sick as hell. And has a lot of little implications, as well as massive implications. The ocean incarnate, freedom itself, is the only goa’uld to actually achieve what the tyrants of her species claim. I think that’s narratively beautiful.
hm, implications for the goa’uld as a species, implications for Eos, is the prophecy a thing here? Is this leviathan mad as hell at Bahamut and humanity in general or is she doing her own thing? Is the starscourge a thing? Just lots of bits and pieces and changes that have the potential to happen here, especially because there’s five other non-goa’uld gods here as well.
also sgc doesn’t have to worry about this goa’uld trying to take one as a host. For one she doesn’t want to. Also she is Far Too Big.
did scales grow on her as she grew bigger? From what i remember of stargate, the goa’uld were really soft skinned and fragile.
Prophecy used to be a thing. In that it was given right after the Fall of Solheim and was supposed to happen in Ardyn's lifetime. Only for Somnus and Bahamut to do their thing.
Bahamut and Shiva tried to give the Prophecy 2.0 out but Leviathan and Ramuh pretty much ignored them. Ramuh quietly, Leviathan not even bothering with pretending. And then butterflies happened and let's just say that by modern era, the Prophecy definitely isn't going to happen the way that Draconian wants.
Leviathan is pissed off at Bahamut for a whole lot of things. Lemme see, there's the Prophecy, the killing of Her worshippers and priesthood, the general killing of Her humans (she brought them here, they're all Hers!), the killing of Her Blessed, the (almost) murder of Her Champion, the fact this idiot thinks he's Her boss.... The list goes on.
Leviathan is not so much homicidal as preferring to do her own thing and not liking when idiots bother her for petty stuff. And it's almost always idiots with petty stuff who try to summon her. She can be surprisingly kind and courteous when she wants to be.
Her reputation in Lucis and Tenebrae is connected to her beef with Somnus and Gilgamesh and Bahamut. But she honestly doesn't care about people there. Nobody is going to be sinking boats, don't worry.
The Star Scourge is a thing.
It is also a thing that has been studied by people other than Besithia, so there have been honest attempts at developing a cure. There's even been some progress in treating the later stages, though that varies.
I think that as Leviathan became an Ascended, she became somewhat malleable, in her looks especially. So she started looking more like sea serpents native to Eos. Of course, those snakes are like two or three meters long but. *points at Leviathan* A Giant Snake (TM) is always in style!
love the concept of Leviathan looking at Bahamut and going, “you’re not the boss of me??”
also, add that to the list of things to horrify sg-1 and sgc, the Sickness That Turns People and Animals Into Monsters.
also love the concept of Leviathan seeing humanity on Eos as Hers, she stole them fair and square. Though they’re less hers in the, “i am the god of these things and they shall do my bidding,” and more in the stealing captive ferrets from incredibly abusive owners and stuffing them under your arms, running away, and building them a proper enclosure that lets the ferrets be ferrets. You might not have gotten all of them but these ones, they are yours and you love them. Even if they are chaotic little bastards who annoy the fuck out of you sometimes.
Did the other astrals ascend from mortal beings, or are they like, nexuses of power and concept that became sapient at some point?
i think the Tok’Ra might shit themselves tbh. Holy shit it’s an old Goa’uld from before Ra, she’s still here and sane and also incredibly powerful.
i can freely imagine Leviathan looking at the current landscape of system lord politics and earth, and practically daring them to try something. Go ahead. Do it. Give it your best shot. Earth got away from you, and My little bastards can teleport sometimes, and She has backup.
Speaking of, what’s the magic situation like on this version of Eos? Is it still confined to bloodlines, or is it more widespread?
Honestly, turning into monsters is not weirder than turning into Neanderthal expies or aging a decade overnight. And we had both on the show.
Also, the turning into monster thing is not well-known, because it has been the standard policy to immediately cremate the bodies of those who die of the Scourge. So not many people know they evaporate if left alone and then coalesce into daemons at night.
***
I'm going to say that the rest of the Astrals are all energy beings. Though, some of them are more human-like than the other by virtue of their interactions with humans. Mostly Ifrit and Ramuh. Shiva thinks she understands humans but she's too alien in some respects and has certain blind spots.
Oh, and while the Cosmogony says there were only twenty-four messangers, I think there are more spirits. Those two dozen are just the most well-known and act like middle managers, so to speak. Ifrit, for example, had fourteen servants that were purely his/hers/theirs/its.
(Some of the lower spirits started out as humans and ascended through various means, including but not limited too: Ascending through meditation like the Alterans; on the power of their fame and glory; straight up stumbling into it because they encountered some fucking weird stuff; marrying a spirit and letting the new spouse mess with their soul.)
And there are spirits who are shared by two or more Astrals depending on how the domains overlap. Say, the Wild Hunt is comprised of seven spirits that all fall under Titan's domain but one of them is also Ramuh's (hunting with birds) and two are Leviathan's (spear-fishing and other hunts involving aquatic animals).
And Eos and Etro are at the top as the Mother Goddesses who preside over life and death cycle.
*waves a hand around*
It's an entire hierarchy, with webs of allegiance and duties and responsibilities, and the titles that are Mantles of Power and empower as much as they shape and constrain. If you are familiar with Dresden Files, you will know what I mean.

The Magic.
Well, you see, it depends on who you ask.
See, if you ask Insomnians or people of Tenebrae, or people in upper classes in Altissia or Niflheim? They will tell you that obviously magic is confined to the two families, the Lucis Caelums and the Fleurets, who were personally blessed with it by Bahamut.
If you ask anyone living in Lucian countryside or Nif deserts, or lower class Accordans or any Galahdian? Magic is something that is part of the world. Some of it is subtle workings that alter probability and bind fates, or potions and poultices that from chemical point of view should not work but somehow do. Some of it are people with more obvious powers like black mages who can sling elemental spells or white mages who make plants bloom from nothing and heal the sick.
And then there are people who are Blessed by an Astral, which alters their magic further (the LCs) or even grants magic where there were none previously (the Fleurets).
So, Regis and others throwing around fireball, the shields and having a magical pocketspace is normal for black mages. Regis lending magic to other people and the ghostly weapons is Blessing of Bahamut. Plus the enormously increase to mana regeneration speed and the throughput. Normally the Blessing would fade after three or four generations but Bahamut stealthily renews it for each King on the throne to keep up the narrative he wants to push through.
With the Fleurets, I'm borrowing @ertrunkenerwassergeist worldbuilding where they weren't particularly magical before Bahamut basically forced his homemade imitation of white magic Blessing at them after Aera died. Again, he renews it every generation so it doesn't fade.
(Plus, killing off the people in both bloodlines who develop magic that doesn't fit "the theme" and suppressing magic in nobility of Insomnia. Because after so many centuries, they should have magic of their own but that would have been counter-productive to his Plan.)
The other Astrals and Messengers and spirits have their own Blessings but they don't give them out often. Usually you either have to be a member of a particular family that has history with a given divinity, or you have to personally do something impressive enough that you are offered a Blessing as a reward. Well, or you are one of Leviathan's Children but in that case the Blessing is for you alone and will not pass even to your children.
Being a Champion is like being Blessed but Up To Eleven. Stronger powers, bigger mana pool, more mana output and you get the boss' personal number for emergencies. In exchange, they sometimes tell you to get your ass to this place and do something about this and this thing. Generally in cases where the slow and deniable approach the spirits favour wouldn't work but a personal intervention would draw too much attention.

Leviathan is juggling a few plots in the background with Ramuh and no-longer-dead Ifrit, because the Sabotage Bahamut's Stupid Prophecy Operation is in the critical stage now. But she will definitely be keeping an eye on what is going on there with the Gate.
Not enough to show up herself but she might send a few of her Children to discreetly stand in the background and listen to what is discussed.
I don’t always have the opportunity to respond, but I want you to know that I’m reading every single word of this with the greatest interest and *glee*. It’s interesting, detailed, and just plain *fun*!
BTW, from a random comment you made earlier and as further inspired by some worldbuilding I’ve seen in this fandom - did you imply that *Ardyn* is Leviathan’s Champion/Chosen? Because that would be lovely, and it would *bode*.
I *love* stories where SG-1 faces out of context problems! Listen, I love ‘em as much as any casual fan, but that also means I love scenarios where they - aren’t the be-all end-all. Does that make sense? Fling Eos at them, see what happens.
