All I know about the ID laws in America is that if they catch you outside with no identification on you, they'll just point blank shoot you right there on the street unless you're white.
It's so fucking weird trying to communicate directly with people who are scared to death of it. I'll notice everybody else is taking their shoes off and be like "oh, should I take my shoes off?" And they just kind of grimace at me until one of them squeezes out an answer. As if looking at me like I'm about to kill someone is more polite than simply informing me you're a no shoes household or whatever

Nolan is decidedly an artist who has an appreciation for and respect for cinema and the craft of film making, and he has a love for making films that are supposed to be strange, dreamlike, even nonlinear. which is hindered by the fact that he, strangely, seems completely uncreative and artistically bland.
If all you’re discussing and noticing in Genshin’s misogyny is how sexualized the designs are, how stereotypical “fanservice bait” a lot of female characters’ content is or how “this character would’ve been better received/taken more seriously if they were the exact same but male!” you’re only scratching the surface of how bad the issue gets.
There’s the fantasy that permeates a lot of the Traveler’s relationships with the female characters. On its own, having someone praise you and treat you well isn’t a bad thing. The problem occurs when you notice that the female characters pushed by the game as “the ones who love the Traveler the most and are the nicest people who ever niced” are the ones who don’t rock the boat. The ones who get called selfless and kind for being unable to say no, even when their safety is at risk from it. The ones who are always eager to help you specifically and be at your service. The ones who don’t question you and just tell you how amazing and special you are. The ones who don’t need you to earn their trust before they pour their entire heart out to you. And if a character shows even the slightest pushback against any of those things, sets boundaries or requires you to actually earn her trust like, you know, a normal human…she gets treated like a liar, suspicious, and maybe your companion might even give her an ugly nickname as punishment. Anything to sell that fantasy of not having to put in any effort to get to know someone, earn their trust, or - god forbid - work through conflicts with them, some of which you might actually have to take accountability for and apologize for mistakes, right? Gee, this totally doesn’t share any similarities with how women get placed onto pedestals irl and end up paying the price when they get shattered…
There’s the recurring pattern of how a lot of the playable women and girls who break the mold in terms of personality (anything other than bubbly or a people pleaser basically) are gradually worn down until “nice, but to the player specifically” is their only shining trait, without any real development or transition periods backing it up. Do I have to spell out why making women and girls to show less of their personality in favor of “nice” to appeal to someone who’s supposed to be a trustworthy friend sends a disturbing message, especially towards what’s meant to be a young audience? And under the guise of heartwarming moments or some cozy or peaceful type setting no less?
It’s also in how if the above women or girls don’t change in one conversation, they’re often subtly coerced into it by the narrative, with the catalyst being the Traveler or some other bubbly character who refuses to honor the concept of personal space/consent. They might even feel shame for being “mean” or upset even when it really wasn’t their fault. (Notable examples being Collei, Furina, Skirk…I guess I’ll put Ninnin here too even though she’s a kuuhenki, the way she was treated by Paimon especially was awful)
It’s in how when a lot of the women and girls show anger…it gets reduced down to some cutesy temper tantrum and rarely taken seriously, even when it’s something completely serious like Diona’s dad and his alcohol problem. Or it gets sanded down because we don’t want you thinking they’re not nice anymore, do we? /s
It’s in how even when a female character’s interests, hobbies, relationships outside the Traveler, importance in their community and what makes them feel emotions are all known to the player…that’s treated as unimportant compared to how nice and reliable they can be for the Traveler.
There’s how even when the women are given “strong” or “boss” careers or prestigious positions, that gets treated like it’s the only thing needed to write a feminist character, and it’s often used to excuse the horrible unchecked biases and gender roles that the rest of their writing gets saddled with. Including even excusing questionable actions from white/light-skinned men in similar or higher positions.
There’s how Hoyoverse puts a rigid standard on their female characters in terms of appearance and temperament (favoring light-skinned, people-pleasing women who are overly helpful, open with their entire lives and privacy, unable to rock the boat with the Traveler) that affects how they’ll be treated by characters and the narrative, and whether they’re allowed to be above criticism by other characters.
There’s also how said standard is often used to uplift certain female characters at the expense of others, especially multiply marginalized female characters (like disabled, racialized, poor, or child characters) or those with “defiant” or “difficult” personalities. That kind of dynamic even lets the “ideal” female characters get away with questionable treatment towards those who don’t fit that ideal at times. That’s actually how a certain type of systemic misogyny manifests within Chinese communities to boot - girls who meet society’s standards are uplifted at the expense of those who don’t, and they’re often taught to enforce and never question a lot of these toxic dynamics themselves even if they don’t realize it. They shape how women and girls are treated at school, work, the media, etc., and every woman and girl involved in this dynamic is harmed in some way.
There’s how racialized women and girls’ struggles often get downplayed and minimized, which is particularly egregious when their problems are similar to that of a white character’s that the Traveler has shown sympathy for in the past. And that extends to their treatment by the fandom (All the talk about how young many of the Knights of Favonius were but no such concern or fanfare for how Candace was only 8 when she was tasked with guarding Aaru Village on her own; showing so much sympathy for overworked women who had other worries on top of that in Mondstadt, only to turn around and call Sayu and Xilonen lazy when they clearly have a lot going on in their lives that would make them tired; Vennessa’s experiences only being brought up in-game to uplift Jean or show how she was of service to Mondstadt to the point the narrative didn’t even think about her in Natlan, etc.)
There’s how the playable child characters, all of whom are girls, are almost never get taken seriously and are treated like problems to be solved instead of humans when they do something that - *gasp* - isn’t trying to please all the adults around them and the Traveler. It’s pretty telling that the two who avoid this treatment the most are the ones who are “good” and “nice” by never getting in the Traveler’s way and being eager to help - Nahida and Kachina. Once again reinforcing the message that girls shouldn’t rock the boat if they want to be “good people” and be treated with basic humanity - and the worst part? This message is often reinforced by the adult women in their lives not taking them seriously (to the point I was surprised when this didn’t happen to Aino) - see what I mean when I say power imbalances can even occur between female characters, and some are uplifted at the expense of others?
I haven’t covered everything - but really think about this stuff the next time you’re seeing discussions of misogyny in the game, you know?
i have to say it was extremely funny for boomie to say that all boundary breakers/proshippers are abusive rapist pedophiles as if the average shipper isnt like. maybe 18 or at least younger/the same age as the actual content creators themselves. and a large chunk of them are also abuse, rape and pedophilia victims. where the fuck is the logic in that?? I think one of the best things I learned from my last therapist was the idea that when there's a box in your mind you need to open, you don't have to open it all the way on the first try.
what I mean is that she said "you didn't deserve <bad thing that happened to you>" and I said, "I feel like I know that intellectually, but I don't really believe it deep down". and she said, "do you think you can try to believe it just a little bit, as an experiment?" and I started crying lmao
trying to change a core belief entirely all at once is scary, especially when it exists as a protective measure. try giving yourself a cheeky bit of plausible deniability! you're just dipping your toes in the water of self-esteem, you're just having a little wade! you don't have to go swimming right away, and you can always step out if you want. (but the longer you spend in the water, the more you start to understand you're actually safe there...hm, who could have predicted this...)
so that's my advice: if there's something real and true you can't seem to believe no matter how hard you try, take some time to try and really believe it just a little bit, even if you're only pretending at first. climb the staircase one step at a time instead of trying to put one foot all the way at the top!
