I made something meant to fix the poor portrayal of disabled characters in these books. I call this my “Scars” AU: Every Dragonet of Destiny is disabled or permanently injured in some way by the end of the first arc. Starflight is blinded just like canon, and Clay straight up lost his whole limb to the viper bite. Sunny has a poison barb this time but her tail was cut off by Scarlet in the first book. Tsunami’s gill damage from Orca’s statue gave her asthma. Glory was born deaf.

Part 2 of Scars AU: What all of that means is that Glory basically never learned how to speak, but did learn to read mouth movements somewhat and communicates through her color changes. Anemone ended up making Tsunami some sort of animus inhaler. Sunny can’t fly until the Rainwings built her a prosthetic tail with the help of pre-blind Starflight. Sunny returned the favor by reading to post-blind Starflight when Fatespeaker isn’t available. There’s more where this comes from. Is any of it good?    

I think it definitely has merit!

I LOVE Peril's character arc SO. MUCH. The fact she could defy LITERAL ANIMUS MAGIC because overtime she finally figured out her moral views is so amazing. I love how she went from borderline yandere to strong character who knows right from wrong. Escaping Peril was a fantastic read.

ok so this may be reaching and it probably is- im still in the middle of moon rising after all. but in the brightest night, sunny (who's the same age as umber) said she thought qibli was her age, maybe a year younger. is it possible umber could've not realized how young qibli is?

This is one of those times where you can’t justify a situation in the text with just what’s in the text. If it was intended to be a “Qibli looks older than he is” note, it would have been corrected later - and it shouldn’t have been the only gay representation in the entire series so far making the mistake.

Maybe, sure, Umber messed up on the age. But that’s never addressed, inside or outside of the text, and Qibli is never described as looking particularly mature for his age. That means the focus needs to be on the author for writing the only gay character be an adult attracted to a child half his age. It doesn’t matter if ‘Umber’ didn’t notice, because the author did, and that is what she chose to write. It could have been any Jade Mountain student of a similar age, but it was Umber. ‘Why Umber?’ is a question with no happy answers.

I really hate how with the exception of Starflight, all of the DoD ships are with dragons older than them, aka adults and began to show interest in one another before the DoD were also adults. It's like Tui wanted to make the DoD adults at first(probably seven or eight like they were meant to be before deciding to escape the cave years early), but then changed her mind and aged them down while forgetting to age down their love interests as well.

Hi, I'm rereading Talons Of Power, and I personally freaked out when Anemone says smth to Turtle along the lines of "lets go wake up your sleeping beauty" (talking about kinkajou) and I think this opens up so many questions, like How do they know the story of sleeping beauty, if they do? did dragons have cinema? are there such specific storyline parallels between humans and dragons? ALSO, later on Moon says smth like "oh heavens" which raises the question of religion?? just wanna know ur opinion

I’m afraid I don’t have answers, but if it helps I will now also be haunted by this knowledge. (SkyWings do have funerary customs so there’s religion in the worldbuilding somewhere, we just haven’t seen much of it.)

isn’t peril like. 9. so she’d be like? twenty? maybe? and clay isnt 7 yet. well maybe he is now come the new arcs but he was six in the first book. 6 is like, 15-17 right? so it always makes me uncomfortable? am i the only one who feels this way?

That is the approximate age difference from what canonical information there is about aging in the books, yes, and you are not the only one made uncomfortable by it.

I hope the fourth arc (if there is one) has a time skip between the previous arc. As far as I'm aware arcs 1-3 take place within like a month. Let these kids rest please.

Graphic novel Shark anon from before here to say I recently got the graphic novel for The Hidden Kingdom and I am loving all these diverse character designs. Even if the art's a still little off at times and I'm not a fan of the human-like legs, I feel like the artist has really gotten better at giving each character a unique design while still making them look like others of their tribe.

I really like how diverse a lot of the dragons are in how they look and are raised. They actually feel like different species instead of just being copy pasted. That being said, I feel like SkyWings and RainWings could look a little more different? Especially now that Tui has hinted at the RainWings and SilkWings sharing a common ancestor.

Skywing have feather tusks similar to owls/eagles/hawks for their ears and Rainwings have feathered ruffles or frills like a lizard for theirs!
