Wren reads The Age of Scorpius by Milo Winter (4/?):
Final(?) thoughts! It was a fun read for me personally, and I didn't find it "unreadable" or "unfinishable" like some others, but I knew what I was getting into when I started! I could not imagine being hyped for this book and then receiving this after pre-ordering 😬
I give it "2 stars (spicy)" based off this scale by @aromanticduck, and I gave it "2 stars 🫠" on Fable
I honestly don't have much more to add, nothing new at least, I feel like I got out all of my "unique" views in my last post. You can also check out my tag wrenreadsaos for all my posts about the topic, including responses to other's posts about it. Hopefully I'm not being annoying and am just adding to the conversation 😅
@afanficof-theageofscorpius has some great posts about the constant misogyny in the book that I highly recommend! I had planned on bringing it up here but then I found their blog and they're a way better writer than me and actually explain it properly, so I have nothing to add, kudos!
I just have one small thing to add before I go!
I've avoided discussing typos and quality control issues, as I feel they've been discussed plenty and I have nothing to add, EXCEPT! (Paraphrasing here) Milo's reasoning for repeating words/phrases was that the book is in Reika's pov and she's autistic and often repeats words/phrases in her head, and believe it or not, I was actually looking forward to this! I'm autistic I have echolalia along with many vocal stims, these vocal stims also repeat in my head and I've never read in the perspective of a character who also does something similar and I was looking forward to it!
I understand that stim words and how they're used vary, and I want to believe that these were intended to be used as stims, but, they just come off as mistakes unfortunately. The easiest example is within the first chapter (the one everyone pointed out and then Milo made the defense I paraphrased above and made me excited because I believed it..), they're all like this and this occurs less and less as the books goes on (or I just completely missed them, very possible).
Giving Milo the benefit of the doubt (bare with me), lets say they are really meant to be stims. I honestly don't know how you'd fix something like this, and have it actually come off as a stim and not just a typo, maybe this bit of representation just doesn't work in book form?
i just noticed that my girl Avia doesn't even get a face in this cover 😭😭 she deserves so much better, and she looks so tiny too!!
i can't get over how Chase looks like he's wearing a tshirt and jeans, it doesn't look like what he wears in the art commissions at all! he looks like he could be a background character in a random Runaways issue. my partner says he looks like an adult version of Linus from Peanuts
and why does Rieka have her short broadsword longsword weirdly holstered to her hip BUT the moon necklace that transforms into the short broadsword longsword is still a necklace hanging around her neck?
why is Kaia walking on rocks? everyone else is walking normally. the impracticality of her outfit is so distracting too, i don't even remember if that's how her clothes are described on the book
@wrensbrainrot i hope it's okay i used your picture, i couldn't find a better one!
there's no reason to this post other than procrastinating so feel free to scroll past
ugh i guess i should get back to writing now, dammit
Avia barely has any art at all! She doesn't have any art of just herself or a reference sheet, when the rest of the main cast does, even Sora and Rowen have art of just them! I feel like Avia is the scapegoat character and just there to make Rieka look good, and it doesn't work for me personally lol
I think there was some miscommunication with the interior art, because a lot of it feels different from what's described in the book and the official art. My theory is the interior art was created before the book was even "done", and possibly before the a lot of the official art as well.
I don't remember Kaia's shoes but her dress is described a bit and yes it is quite impractical, but beautiful is pain I guess.. Also Chase is never once described as having jeans on, but I feel like he does have a t-shirt once? I may be misremembering, Rieka's dad is definitely described to have a polo once lol
Yes and some of the other art pieces were made before the book was finished.
The think the discrepancies are just due to Milo being a terrible writer. Because I did notice he had extensive notes and even relationship charts. Narah was only supposed to be a friend and I think later on perhaps her sister.
But since Milo doesn't edit or reread his own work, he can't remember what was written from draft to draft. I think it got a rewrite in 2023 because he became a She-ra fan. Adora x Catra shipper. That's why Chase x Reika disappeared.
Oh that makes so much sense! I haven't seen the relationship chart or his notes because I've been trying to judge the book purely on its own, but all of the romance felt so off. Along with She-Ra, I've also heard that it seems to be heavily influenced by The Legend of Korra, which yeah...
The scenes where Chase and Rieka insist they aren't into each other feels like maybe Milo was trying to convince himself?? The scenes were so unnecessary and just made their friendship so weird. If written well I would have quite enjoyed an interaction like this (a singular interaction, not multiple like in the book) especially if Chase was actually written to be the flirty character I THINK he was meant to be. I love clear communication, and I also love flirty characters.
Avia and Chase have the classic rivals to lovers trope going on, but Avia is such a nothing character and it felt so one-sided (with Avia coming off as the interested one) to me. I didn't even realize a relationship was building at first, and I actually thought maybe Chase and Kaia would be a thing since he actually compliments her in (and maybe I just really missed the nuances but I really didn't notice him flirting with anyone, Avia included) and they have the whole power connection thing going on.
Speaking of Kaia, does anyone else find it, interesting, that the only character without a love interest is also the only black character? Arguably the only poc character in the main cast since Milo goes back and forth on if Rieka (and Avia, though I haven't seen any comments mentioning her specifically) is supposed to be Asian or not?
And I have nothing to say about Narah and Rieka despite them being the main romantic relationship. Narah is so wasted and I don't have an understanding of her personality at all. Her character feels like if we only ever read about Katniss while she was in the arena, or only saw the Winter Solider but never Bucky Barnes, I want to know what she's like when she's not fighting, when she's in full control of herself. The book tries to do this, but never succeeds for me personally and she still feels like a love interest for the sake of a love interest, which I've seen/read many times, but it's new to see it in lesbian form lol
And I know it's not like, morally or legally wrong or anything, but Reika and Avia being siblings and dating Narah and Chase, who are also siblings, feels so strange, I don't know how to explain it 🫣
