How are films based on true events or novels created?
A story always follows a generic rule : Introduction, rising action, climax, and falling action.
Real life doesn’t function that way, so they absolutely alter the design and structure of events or biographies while screening them as films.
Let’s first talk about films based on true events.
They require a hell lot of research and are harder to accomplish as compared to a film based on biography. The topic may be (and mostly is) controversial. There can be legal and classified data involved such as :
a movie showcasing a terrorist attack
a tragic death toll due to disease or chemical exposure
activities involving governmental agencies
court cases.
If you want to make a film, you need to know what happened, and to obtain what happened is never simpler. The film, reaching to a mass population, needs to hold its accuracy.
Research is heavily done in these kinds of plots, setting apart rumors and facts. Directors will cut the whole event in pieces and rearrange them in a narrative manner. He/she can make amends with the storyline to help the audience understand it better, but it cannot change the timeline of the event. Furthermore, a specific moment, character or place will be the focal point and presented as an introduction of the film, to give the audience an idea of how it all started.
Some characters can be purposely written in order to intensify a scene, some may be added as extras -- just to help the narrative or add a crisp to the theme. But remember that all of these must always be present in the OUTER circle of the main story, where their actions won't hamper or jeopardise the main event of the film.
For movies based on books, there’s a larger scope of change.
The filmmaker and the author are frequently in contact with each other, where the author first understands what the director is willing to present visually. Whether he/she wants a particular scene modified or completely scrapped out. If the author is peaceful with that modification, they move on to sign the contract.
Furthermore, books will always be different than movies. The element of storytelling in both of them varies in huge proportions. What you can describe for pages and pages will cover ten seconds of screen time. Instead more time will be focused on dialogue, expressions and character interaction, so there’s always scope for alterations when it comes to films based on books, though most of it depends on the the agreement with the author.
Tips for fight scenes
If you get punched in the nose your eyes will water, a lot, even if it didn’t really hurt
Your body follows your head, your head gets pushed one way and your body will want to go that way
Getting hit in the stomach isn’t good, it hurts, getting hit in the diaphragm is worse. Causes your lungs to kinda spasm and make it hard to breathe (diaphragm is between stomach and chest)
When fighting a larger person they will have an easier time forcing you back
The jaw is the knockout button. Hit it hard enough and down for the count
Back of the head is very vulnerable, can cause serious damage if hit there
Kidney punches. They hurt. A lot.
People with experience will try to be where they are comfortable. A wrestler will try to get their opponent on the ground, a boxer will stay on their feet, etc.
Easiest counter to a kick is to get closer to whoever is throwing it, then they won’t have enough room for it to be effective
If you want realism, avoid fancy, flashy moves. They’re less practical and easier to counter.
How Reading Makes You Smarter
Reading textbooks gets you higher grades, while reading novels gives you higher greed -- for knowledge, insight, and perspectives engraved onto the paper.
You don't just read, you bond with the people in it, experience the situations and their repurcussions. You let your veins explode in their wrath, heart clenched in their agony, and tears shedded in their bliss. You let yourself barge in the life of a person who doesn't even exist yet imparts wisdom that can be inculcated in all kinds. Such is the effect of reading.
The first and foremost development through reading is your eye movement. Good circulation of blood means sharp observation. And whether your reading is silent or aloud, regular reading will increase your concentration level in just few days.
Using 'really' in every sentence is 'really' boring, or should I say exhaustive, monotonous and repetitive? Do you often struggle to express your opinion in a well thought manner? Well, books and novels are filled with fresh and precise vocabulary.
An excellent visualizer is always one step ahead. Predicting every obstacle and planning to pluck it out of the way. How do you catch this visualizing power? The answer is reading. There are self-help books that feature real-life success and failure stories, or fiction that highlight issues you face or may face if you haven't already-- parental issues, childhood trauma, depression, work pressure, peer pressure, relationships and many more.
Reading introduces you with your inner self. Encountering your emotions that were buried deep inside and getting on terms with them, accepting and respecting their worth and understanding your true personality, all of it is never done easier than reading mere words on a paper.
This habit garners you your own space and peace of mind when you've had enough of the world around. So don't waste any time, start reading and get your hand on the ultimate guide to smartness!
One of the keys to writing the middle of a story is to avoid a plot that becomes episodic or repetitious. In general, an episodic plot arises when the protagonist is tasked with performing the same basic action over and over. John Truby calls this "repeating the same beat".
For example, if a character has to fight an ogre, then fight a swamp monster, then fight a dragon, etc. then we're hitting the same basic action and consequently the same beat. We tend to see this when a character is sent on a laundry list of tasks that they must complete before they can get to the thing that they actually need to complete. In order to defeat the villain, for example, they might need to first defeat his three henchmen or find three pieces of an item, etc.
How do we avoid this? One of the key techniques is to ensure that the journey is one of discovery, not only one of action. We also generally want to avoid a story where a character's plan is known from the beginning and it's never forced to change (this is what we tend to see in laundry list plots). As a character sets out on their journey, the opponent's plan should be throwing new disruptions at the protagonist, forcing improvisation.
If we know the character's plan from the beginning and there's never a change in that plan, then the story is driven by the boring question of "Will the protagonist be able to do the thing that we know they're going to be able to do because otherwise there'd be no story?" Instead, the protagonist should be learning new things about the nature of the opponent's plan and potentially their identity.
This should cause the protagonist to change strategies and take fundamentally new actions. To avoid an episodic plot we also generally want to lean into revelations. The best way to do this is to ensure that the opponent's plans and potentially identity are initially masked and only revealed through a series of discoveries over the course of the journey.
As a general rule we don't want the protagonist to understand the true nature of the problem from the beginning. If they do, let them confront it head on from the beginning (and be disappointed when they're faced with failure).
And finally, we must have the courage to let dramatic questions be answered. Instead of sending the protagonist on errands, let them directly confront the villain. Don't delay confrontation in order to extend the story's runtime.
And finally, we must have the courage to let dramatic questions be answered. Instead of sending the protagonist on errands, let them directl
How to control emotions
When encountered the following emotions :
1. Insult, frustration, anger due to others' stupidities or impossible behaviours / due to your own critic mind
How to respond :
#take deep breaths
# pen down your thoughts, read them till you feel satisfied, crumble the ppr, tear it into pieces, throw away.
# If it's well expressed, especially words of passion resulted by anger, keep it for future inspiration. You want to know you believed in yourself previously, and you will do it again.
# solve puzzles of your favourite topic (mine is grammar and vocabulary related, or space and science). This will give you the sense of achievement, improvement, revision as well as distraction required at the moment.
# play games such as crossword, music tiles, racing, etc.
# listen to party songs or raps
# see funny memes (best mood shifting and distraction strategy)
2. People bashing at you, sarcastically tormenting, advising shitty things, praising themselves and putting you down / making you feel bad about yourself in ANY way.
How to respond :
Change your body language. Make a firm posture, keep your chin high, walk confidently with calm pace (like you're in control of yourself and your life). Show expressions of indifference and evoke a deeply neutral tone.
For example, other person : "I've achieved this at this stage. What's your excuse? You're never gonna be as smart/successful as me."
You : quietly sipping the coffee, already lost in some other thought. Then comes the most abrupt and normal response, "yea." Then you get back at your work as if you've been busy for all your life but managed to give your few minutes to listen to this fella.
Keep yourself maintained with a mature smile just as a mother gives to her 3 year old kid wanting to become a superman.
3. Feel like CRYING
How to respond :
# take deep breaths,
# draw patterns (circle inside circles, criss cross lines, sea waves, lightning)
# close your eyes
# imagine whatever the hell distracts you at that moment, it can be as stupid as a tree running or you jumping higher enough to sit on a cloud. Literally anything.
