i must say, i am a huge fan of when a book is in the middle of a very exciting plot containing many interesting problems when out of nowhere for a few pages it's like, "hey by the way, real quick, here's a detailed explanation of the city's water filtration system! i'm telling you this for a reason and you should worry about it. anyway! haha okay back to the plot" and you just get to be Scared for a while
i am kissing you on the mouth right now
you are the only person who understands me. you and the person who tagged a series of unfortunate events
up late thinking about walburga alone in her house after regulus and orion died and her remaining son who abandoned her in the name of james potter is sitting in jail for killing him
I live in the northwest coast of Canada so we walk everywhere and do stuff outside in the rain and swim in whatever lakes and rivers we find so imagine my smug sense of Canadian superiority when I met a USAmerican Midwesterner who was horrified at the very thought
And then I went to the USAmerican Midwest
And I understood
What I mean to say is that it's very easy to delude yourself into believing you are more in tune with your environment when your environment is not actively hostile to your existence in every conceivable way
BC, Canada:
Rains frequently, but the worst is like standing under a bathroom shower. Genuinely inhospitable rainstorms are uncommon.
Along the coast, it's pretty easy in most areas to walk to at least one store, or else there's usually a bus or shuttle available. There are sidewalks and bike lanes everywhere.
It's a temperate boreal rainforest, so while there are many freshwater lakes and rivers, they're usually pretty cold. The biggest danger is typically getting caught in a strong current, and the most dangerous animals in swimming distance are on land.
Earthquakes happen almost every day, but the vast majority go unnoticed. Buildings are designed to withstand bigger seismic activity, so unless it's a 5 or higher it just kind of feels like having low blood sugar for a second. There are no tornados
Rural Illinois, USA:
One minute it's sunny, then ten minutes later that distant smudge on the horizon has swallowed the entire sky in black clouds and the water is coming down like waterfall and you literally CANNOT SEE. Then there's a crash like cymbals and you need to get indoors because the thunder and lightening are on TOP of you
No sidewalks until you are in the smack dab center of town, which is a three hour walk or twenty minute drive from wherever you are.
There aren't many natural bodies of water other than small ponds and creeks, and because the environment is so much warmer, those are filled with snapping turtles that can grow bigger than a nine year old child and water snakes that are incredibly venomous. These are paired with leeches and mosquitos for that sweet umami flavor.
Sometimes Jupiter, Lord of the Heavens decides to jam his finger into the side of your house just to fuck with your whole shit and throws your truck a thousand yards into the nearest church
both the SWPT and the SWOT are greek tragedies in narrative. the only difference is that the SWOT averted the tragic ending to give us a fairytale happily ever after
because you genuinely cannot convince me that luke discovering his "sworn enemy who killed his father" actually BEING his father and then trying to throw himself off of cloud city isn't something out of a greek tragedy. but "there is another", leia finds him, luke survives, and he actively chooses to steer the spaceship out of the asteroid field and make his own happily ever after
Luke's trajectory can be see as an 'averted' tragedy of many kinds....
There's the fact he finds out Leia is his twin sister before anything 'happens' between them (averting the tragedy of Turin Turambar from Tolkien's Silmarillion/Children of Hurin, itself inspired by the tragic Finnish tale of Kullervo). There's the fact that the tragic Irish myth of Cu Chulainn and Connla (father accidentally/unwittingly killing his own son) is basically averted in ESB by the fact he knows Luke is his son (and the reveal is the other way around).
Likewise, Luke in RotJ is (to use fialleril's iconic phrase) 'Orpheus Triumphant', rather than the tragic version who fails to bring his loved one back from the Underworld. (Even Leia is an Orpheus Triumphant figure in her own right because she embarks on an ultimately successful mission to rescue Han from the Underworld of Jabba's palace at the beginning of RotJ as well!)
And this doesn't even go into how Luke's hero's journey has many similar beats as Anakin's fall, with the PT a purposefully constructed mirror image to the OT. Viewing them side-by-side shows how Luke is faced with similar temptations, but makes different choices with happier outcomes. (Again, Luke is the Galahad to Anakin's Lancelot.)
The only real difference between a tragedy and a comedy in the theatrical sense *is* the ending. Much has been written about how many Shakespeare comedies could so easily be turned into tragedies (and vice versa) just by altering the final scenes.
And in the case of the Skywalker saga, this is why the ending of RotJ is so crucial.... it's all about that eucatastrophe — the sudden, miraculous turn of fate that reverses the tragedy — aka, what Tolkien famously argues is the defining feature of the happy ending of a fairy tale.
In this case, it is the seemingly-impossible redemption and return of Anakin Skywalker which saves Luke from an almost-certain doom, and which defeats the Sith and frees the galaxy.
On the topic of tales of redemption, Joseph Campbell, Lucas's biggest mythopoeic inspiration, writes:
“Sober, modern ... judgment is founded on a total misunderstanding of the realities depicted in the fairy tale, the myth, and the divine comedies of redemption. These, in the ancient world, were regarded as of a higher rank than tragedy, of a deeper truth, of a more difficult realization, of a sounder structure, and of a revelation more complete. The happy ending of the fairy tale, the myth, and the divine comedy of the soul, is to be read, not as a contradiction, but as a transcendence of the universal tragedy of man.”
"we need more complex female characters." you guys can't even handle supergirl.
kara doing all of that for her dog is completely understandable btw. like on a surface level yeah most people would go to hell and back if their pet was unreasonably injected with a lethal dose of poison, but krypto is her only connection to her home other than clark, and one of her main sources of comfort after everything she went through. like he was a raggedy stray who ran up to her and her only during her moms funeral where she instantly picked him up and took him in, stuck with her when her father sent her to earth, kept her company on a planet where she was grappling with her sudden superpowers under the yellow sun and her only living relative spoke a language she couldn't understand at the time, and went with her as she travelled from planet to planet to drown her sorrows, and you're telling me you wouldn't go berserk for that dog if you were her??
"home is wherever you are, buddy"? yeah, yeah it is
why must female led superhero movies be exceptional. why can't they just be good. like legit i'm sick of it. supergirl is fun and good i enjoyed it and that's all you fuckers are getting out of me. go see it.
Just got out of seeing supergirl is really good. Do yourselves a favor and go give it a chance
I love the scene where Kara pretends to be white girl wasted while in the bar with Lobo. we're planet hopping, omgggggg what is this our third planet??? it's my birthday we're having sooooooo much fun we're harmless we're literally just girls don't worry about us and successfully defuses the situation
it's the same as when Ruthye begs to be let out of the cage and talk to Krem, crying and begging please I don't want to die please I'll be good I'll be so good just don't let me die I'm small I'm harmless I'm a little girl I can't hurt you please and then she beats the crap out of the guard
you think we're just girls. we can use that
So you're telling me you don't like the movie about the depressed super powered young adult getting her shit together and beating up a bunch of sex trafficking pedophiles? Lame.
Of course they don’t like Milly Alcock’s Supergirl. She’s a grown ass woman with zero love interests who spends the movie saving her dog, casually dismantling a sex trafficking ring while she’s at it, and preaching the importance of being good, not nice or smiley or cheerful but good. I for one adored the movie and I really hope I’ll get to see more of Alcock’s Supergirl she’s now my favorite iteration of her and I love her so dearly.

having 40 minutes to leave the house is terrible because 40 minutes is basically 30 minutes and 30 minutes is basically 20 minutes and 20 minutes is basically fifteen seconds. but 50 minutes? 50 minutes is an hour, and an hour? ooobh thats plany off time
