"Pride cometh before the fall" well yeah, buddy- that's how seasons work.
radio is kind of wild really, the first thing we did after discovering an ethereal field that permeates the universe is infuse it with music.
Argh... so I've been reading in Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (SVSSS) fandom recently. And it's given me a new pet peeve about formatting and TTS. A bunch of the authors in that fandom are using black lens brackets to indicate the 'system' voice, 【like this】, because the original novels do, and, yeah... unfortunately that's not always compatible with TTS (definitely not with google's TTS engine, and testing with various other online TTS engines gives mixed results).
Guess how I know they're called black lens brackets.
…
Go on, guess.
…
YUP! They get read aloud! Every. Single. Time. They. Appear. Open black lens bracket like this close black lens bracket.
Please resist using the novel's formatting and just use regular square brackets instead! Which do not get read aloud unless there's a space in a bad position, [ like this ]. If you want to be fancy, maybe use <tt>...</tt> formatting or a monospaced font such as courier to make it stand out more as something mechanical.

Which reminds me, another bad formatting choice I've bumped into multiple times (and I can't remember if I've mentioned this one before) is where authors use something <like this> to indicate things like speaking mind-to-mind, or that someone is speaking a foreign language (despite the actual text still being in English). Cool. Neat. Also not TTS compatible, unless you like repeatedly hearing less than and greater than mixed into the text. But guess what - there are already perfectly serviceable ‹single› and «double» angled quotation marks that could be used instead - and since they're recognized as actual quotation marks, they don't get read aloud! Shocking, I know.
Those angled quotation marks could also be another decent option for indication of things like the system voice, obviously.

Thanks to everyone who is already using more TTS-compatible formatting, and to anyone who decides to make some changes to theirs after reading this :)

Heads up to not use Duolingo or to cease using it
In December 2023 they laid off a huge percentage of their translation teams, replacing them with ai and having the remaining members review the ai translations to make sure the translations are “acceptable” (Note how they use the world acceptable and not accurate)

If you’re a current user prepare for an uptick in translations errors as I’ve already seen people in the comments say they’ve noticed
Duolingo has been shifting toward AI since last September according to their blog.

The rate of mispronounced words (mostly on/kun substitutions in Japanese) has gone dramatically up in my lessons, and I'm willing to bet this is why.
Let me tell you about Oregon mail in voting because I fucking love voting in this state.
They send you an entire book with information on all the candidates and bills right there. The way proposed bills and amendments are formatted is they have a neutral, plain language summary, the actual text of the bill, and then arguments for or against submitted by various groups. It's a solid summary of the issue being voted on and its various sides delivered right to your doorstep. Sometimes the sheriffs claim something that's the literal opposite of what the bill says and you can see the blatant lies because the text of the bill is literally on the previous page. It's great, everywhere should do this.
The arguments section is usually like 2-3 pages, 4-6 if its a controversial issue. The arguments section for this amendment was TWELVE pages long with not a single argument against. 12 whole pages of unanimous bipartisan support. Bills dealing with gun control and drugs haven't been this long!
We did it. We found the bipartisan agreement everyone's been looking for and its that senators should have to show up to their fucking jobs. Truly everybody disliked this.
So as the GOP throw their little tantrums, please know that their own voter base was absolutely dragging their asses over this and laugh at their baby tears.
The bots are evolving

one of my favorite tidbits about speedrunning that comes up every time the games done quick marathons come around is how Wind Waker speedruns are about five hours long because of the giant wall in Hyrule that actually forces the runner to play the game because they’ve been throwing shit at this wall for over a decade and still can’t figure out a way past it. the wall in hyrule is entirely unglitchable and the only way past it is to play the game properly. the speedrun would be like one hour if they could get past this wall but nope, it’s five hours. fuck the wall.
and the comedy of this situation is exponentially amplified the more you know about skips and glitches in speedruns in general
as examples of how broken WW is elsewhere, you can clip through walls and go out of bounds to skip entire dungeon sequences pretty much anywhere with a ledge, use the Wind Waker to enter a state where you ignore physics and swim at 5000 miles an hour, and even fly infinitely into the sky after dying like some kind of helium zombie. do you know how many games could be broken wide open by an infinite height trick? TTYD would shave off 3 or 4 hours.
but this fucking barrier around Hyrule Castle, against all odds, is just completely insurmountable with any of this. Ganondorf is literally the most successful and powerful villain in gaming history and this Super Extendo Fuck You Shield™ is a shining testament to it
This is the kind of information I want on my dash
Okay but do you have any idea just how big the Super Extendo Fuck You Shield™ actually is? Try approximately four times the height of the castle itself.
And not only that, but even if you get over the invisible wall, there’s another barrier that causes damage and knockback. So even if you managed to get over the invisible wall part of the Nintendo Containment System™, there’s still an additional, cylinder-shaped barrier that will do damage to you and knock you back out, even if you try to get in from the top or bottom. That castle has more security measures than Fort fucking Knox and it’s all to give a middle finger to speedrunners wanting to finish the game in an hour. It’s fucking wild.
https://youtu.be/7XBPrFYN1MU
As of July 2019, the barrier has been defeated in all versions of the game, and the current World Record is 1hr 04m50s. The current method is to give yourself seventy invisible grappling hooks, which corrupts so much of the game’s memory that there’s not enough left over to load the barrier (or a lot of other things, like enemies or cutscenes. It’s amazing). You can just walk right trough where it’s supposed to be.
