HEY, SO, I DID A THING —

From a suggestion given to me by @otolin-xiv, especially in regards to our WoL verse(s), I decided to put together my own 30-day writing challenge for my friends and anyone in the wider community who might be interested. Aka, there are many writing challenges out there; this is mine.

Some quick things to note:

Your character does not need to be a WoL to participate; however, myself and a handful of other people will be using it for that purpose to expand on our character(s) WoL verses.

There are no prizes at the end because I am not artistic in the slightest.

There is no order to which you need to do the prompts! You can also sub in different words if one doesn’t vibe with you, as well as skip days. This is a personal challenge to encourage people to write.

Length of a prompt doesn’t matter! Write twenty or two thousand words.

The start date of this challenge is from today (3rd May) and will run until next month (June 2nd)

Use the tag #seaswolchallenge so I can see what you have written! I’ll likely reblog it to this blog @gatheredfates OR a side blog depending on how popular it gets.

Similarly, if enough interest is generated, I might just make this a monthly thing.

Keepers - He left the Shroud by choice when he was a teenage…because he was bored. He’ll still boast his Keeper claim, while frolicking in the sunlight and parting at night. Maybe you knew him when he was younger. Maybe you think he’s an embarrassment to mooncattes everywhere. He’ll take it.

Friendbuddies! …Enemybuddies! - Seda is a social butterfly, even when people don’t want him to be. More likely than not, he’ll but into conversations he’s not invited to just for the sake of…well, being noticed. (due to the knowledge left behind by sharlayans, the idyllshire gobbieflock potentially speaks better “common” than other gobbiekin, since they have been reading the books, papers, etc they found in the city. this is a pretty handy post on the official forums about the basics of gobbiespeak.)

* Always speak in 3rd person, without possession. Ex. jinglyshine of Gillyfix, not “my jinglyshine” or “gillyfix’s jinglyshine”. This goes for all parties in a sentence. (What’s x of Gillyfix is also x of Bob)

The Rise and fall of Monsters.

Beasts and creatures of horrific creation were becoming more widespread - and so the call came for help! Amon roused the Wyrmguardians, and they came to the call... Hell a lot came to the call; lets see if I got everyone! F’lyn, Kiratai, llyirana, Zhalar, Avelaina, Sevyx, Tsuki, Prei, Amon, and Faelyneaux; Just a whole mess of people. Although, for the first portion of this.... Starr(Tsuki) and Sev joined this fight after these shenanigans...

To the Sagolii desert they went! For the mining camps in the desert, as they had already suffered an attack, where a gigantic beast had destroyed everyone and everything, except for one little girl, still clutching her mother's dismembered arm to her chest. Kira took the girl in immediately, while F'lyn scouted out and spotted the trail of the monster... It had traveled beneath the sand. Meanwhile Zhalar made the mistake of opening himself up and immediately discovering what was at work here... Magic... BLACK magic... Could it be? Forbidden, and thought lost, it had reappeared in this desert there was no mistake of that!

They followed the trail of this monster thanks to F'lyn's keen eye, leading them to another camp. All the while Kiratai would keep the girl safely upon her chocobo as they confronted a man in a black robe, who appeared to be... playing with the desecrated corpses of the bodies left in his wake. "Too soon." They were told, and as F'lyn made a break to attack - a monstrous sandworm erupted from the desert! Mouths and limbs covering it's entire body; it possessed endless gaping maws... As there was no stomach but the pure abyss of dark magic.

This beast was no match for the Wyrmguard though! As they took it on without fear, battling it down quickly before the turned their sights onto the mage. The mage who wove such intricate dark magic turned his attention to the Wyrmguardians in kind - and gave them exactly what they were asking for, a fight! If they wanted to stop his macabre creations, they would have to go through the darkness he could create! And that already twisted though dead creation was given new life... And as it sank beneath the sands, it rose again, this time with three swirling heads! (HAIL HYDRA!)

Lashing out, they pummeled the part upon entering, only to turn all their attention to the one that demanded it - F'lyn. If not for the swift healing of Zhalar and Kiratai, the party was in trouble, but most of all their cat boy was going to be killed! Eeep. LUCKILY DAMAGE WAS ON THEIR SIDE! Illyirana pummeled them with a massive fireball, while Prei concocted and unleashed RUIN upon the worm. Fae delivered punishing magical blows upon sandworm and mage alike! Amon went lumberjack chopping, while Ave turned the worm into a Brillo pad, the massive three headed creation however... Made mincemeat of F'lyn.

Ripping him to shreds, they were never prepared for the ultimate attack combination in the meantime! THE CERBERUS LIMIT BREAKER PLUS KIRA! F'lyn used up all the energy he could to finish one head, while Ave fired an arrow that carved another head in twain! Purple blood and guts filled the air! And something else?! PREI UNLEASHES METEOR HOLY FUDGE BALLS. Damn near crushing the tank in the process - almost seemed premeditated but considering the lack of him being as splattered as the worm was, the group got to witness the power of an ANGRY KIRATAI Calling upon the strength of a demi-primal, she cast a spell that many knew and feared... THE BLUE AKH MORN!

The mage who had suffered at the hands of Fae and Ave was burned into the ground as nothing more than skeletal remains... A staff... and the soul stone of a black mage... Woo... The fight... was finally over! Wasn't... it? WRONG.

Kiratai retreated with child and F'lyn, while the others sorted themselves out, looking on towards the black magic and mage in question. What were they to do about it? And then the trap was sprung. Amon's gunsmith, one who happened to know all of Amon's plans and just what it was all this time, had been secretly plotting. He needed the power of black magic, but how would he ever manage on his own? He had studied, he had sought it... but to actually FIND it.... there was no chance he'd pass this up, not if it were real... And considering the monstrous creations that had been about, what else could it be. The axe so graciously fixed by Kumo and returned to Amon... hissed with sleeping gas when it finally locked into place again, causing the remaining party members to drop much like stones...

Amon himself out cold~ Fae held on barely, as did Ave, while Prei and Zhalar joined Amon in his old man cat nap. The gas spread and spread, until it began to disappear as quickly as it had poured out - though now there was a disturbing new trend... The shadow of a seated figure in the midst of the smoke. Kumo had been lying in wait all along, knowing what was at stake, he appeared, warning the Wyrmguardians to stay out of his way...

But Fae and Ave weren't stooges, they knew what this man was here for... He was here for the black mage soul stone! Fae stood in his way, and delivered an amazing right hook into Kumo's face... Only to be responded with what could only be described as thundra magnified throughout Fae's being, sending him sprawling away... - And only Ave to fire her arrow, right through his shoulder! As the Auri stumbled he fell into reach of his goal, picking up the Soul Stone that he so desperately desired.... And unleashing fire unto Ave immediately. The call was already out - the Wyrmguardians couldn't let this man escape so easily, not just yet. IN COME! STARR! (Tsuki) AND SEV! (Sevyx) - are riding in to help save the day!

And boy did they. Standing off with Kumo, the group attacked, revealing him for who he was as they ripped away that yellow hood, 'Kumo' the spider among them revealed, he quite rapidly unleashed havoc by attacking Starr, only to have hand and arm sliced apart by the encroaching Sev - followed by chakram from Starr in a combination attack that left the man scrambling for answers on how to preserve the situation.... And so he channeled not one but two spell works worth of Aether from the land about him.... Prei, still dazed, could barely find herself, while Zhalar got up, and decided... Time to settle the score for back at the cave - as he threw a full stone pillar into the auri, sending him topsy turvy!

But this was a trick, for as he lay on the ground he finished the groundwork for his spell - then standing up unleashed it! FIRA FROM THE HEAVENS, the kind of FIRA only a black mage could do... The burns would not last, but this was all a delaying tactic - for Kumo had vanished in the aftermath of his spellwork... Warning the Wyrmguardians that their choice to impede him, would turn his attention to Them... As Kumo's plot to destroy lesser races now involved the whole of the free company, and every Wyrmguardian to go along with it - for now though, they could count themselves safe... Or could they? FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFIND OUT NEXT TIME!

Tourist in the Forest.

The valiant Wyrmguard was called into action by the Conjurer's guild in Gridania for a simple task as they were spread thin helping with Garlean pockets and protecting the whole of the Twelveswood. The task? Find out why trees were starting to come to life and attack passerby.

Speaking with an Elezen man in Ganineaoux’s Bower they find out that perhaps it's A Sylph. Upset that something changed in the woods. Arriving at the location in question they discover a Sylph who demands that what was taken be returned. The eversharp Theo and Zhal, picking up on the wrong speech patterns confront the creature. Who drops their disguise. Revealing himself to be a hooded man carrying an unconscious Sylph in his arms. Dmitri, quick to respond to a magical casting of some kind. Preventing his escape. Tackles the man before it can finish. Fae with his good heart runs to help the now dropped Sylph with healing magiks, and finds out that a few of their kind have been taken.

Going for a device in his pockets, Dmitri quickly secures the stranger's hands. While Zhal finds mechanical device around a Crystal and a note that simply said “Pfarwyb”... What might the note mean? What could be happening?

In a twist of events that could only be called Kiratai's double Quest nightmares - Amon took out some members of the Wyrmguard to learn WINTER SURVIVAL TRAINING! -Yaaay it's freezing.- During Amon's attempts to teach others how to build a proper camp fire out in the cold, screams arose... Where from? More screams, and more! Finally they realized, that cave! SOUTH OF THEM!

And Kira bolted off like the natural healer she was, only to run into what looked like a spot of trouble as 3 bandits came rushing out of the mouth of the cave! ATT- Kira uses Diplomacy! It was super effective - they were miners! They'd been in the cave, they were running from certain death, as even while they tried to tell their tale, they were attacked again! One of the miner's was yanked away by a giant tongue, leaving the other two survivors to take off while F'lyn charged in to save the boy!

Only to come across a terrible beast of voidsent proportions - too many arms, unsightly eyes, boils, and thick armored skin of a two headed and 3 mouth having Sasquatch! That's right 3! IT'S ENTIRE STOMACH WAS ONE - AND SO IT BEGAN, with F'lyn doing his best to control the monster's attention, while Kira saved the entire group. Time, after time, and even managed a very personal save of F'lyn, what a healer!

Meanwhile, Prei sensing that she was the only one capable of doing all the work, did pretty much just that, ALL the work. Throwing spell after spell while Masaru took a moment and Amon, well, he had a hip cramp. Too old for this shit after all! Then finally when they'd gotten the monster onto it's last legs, Prei took a massive amount of energy that seemed pretty much made of EVIL and cast it at the monster, exploding it's own spell work!

But what ho? A scroll? And a waxy magical seal that won't break by normal means?! What's it all mean?!

Pray Destroy the Waking Sands:

Wyrmguard Coalition was called to Eastern Thanalan to investigate a most suspicious claim involving freely roaming dead in their graveyard. While the rumor of such happening did seem crazy to the group, an investigation was launched. Set to explore the grounds during the night, the party discovered the presence of someone living there. Colored Pictures, bread crumbs, torn rags. All to find a young boy hiding out behind the church.

The kid informed the group that he had been helped by an old hermit who was raising the dead. The old man promised to reunite the child with his parents who had passed away recently due to an unfortunate wagon accident. Branden, the child, led the group to Old Man Crystoph, who had currently been working on five corpses, the shambling abominations brainless and soulless, walking husks of their former selves.

The group chose to engage the old man, despite his pleas to let him continue and bring more people back to life, resulting in a battle of confused corpses and very angry gunbreakers. Eventually the old man's life came to a gory end as Theo's justice side obliterated the body, though in front of the child, Branden. This upset the child, believing his only chance to see his parents was gone. He swore vengeance on the Coalition to make them pay. Lucius volunteered to stay back while the group leaves, so that the Ishgardian could clean up the mess and finish the contract.

Archery information for writers that no one asked for but probably some of you need and I like talking about archery, so here it is.

when you put an arrow on the string, the verb is called “nocking” i.e. eyes glued on the target, he nocked the arrow

also the part of the arrow that gets put onto the string is called the nock. depending on the type of arrow this can be a piece of plastic glued into the arrow, or with wood or bamboo arrows it can be carved into the shaft of the arrow itself

you do not close an eye when aiming or shooting; you see better with both eyes open.

everyone has a dominant eye that more naturally your brain focuses with. that determines whether you are right or left handed when shooting, and doesn’t necessarily correlate to whether the person is right or left handed in anything else

so if you’re writing a character who has difficulty seeing out of one eye, take that into account when they are shooting

if they are right eye dominant, they hold the bow with their left hand and draw the string with their right. if they are left eye dominant, they hold the bow with their right hand and draw the string with their left

if they shoot left, the quiver sits on their left side/hip/thigh. shoot right - right side quiver.

there are several different ways to draw, if you are writing something historical or in a specific region, then do research on that style of archery. but for a generic place to start that is a more universal way of drawing a bow, here are some things to include

the chin stays down. raising your chin will fuck up your aim

the pointer finger on your draw hand rests on the side of your chin/jaw, and the string of the bow will touch the tip of the archer’s nose

weight is on the balls of your feet, leaning slightly forward off your heels

if it is an older bow/barebow, there is not usually a place for the arrow to rest on the bow. this means the arrow rests on the archer’s hand. if they are not wearing a glove on that hand, the fletchings (that’s the feathers on the arrow) will more than likely slice their hand when firing. this scars.

so if you’re wanting to describe someone observing and archer’s hands (hands are hot, don’t @ me) they would see a silver scar about halfway between the pointer finger knuckle and palm of the person’s hand. (turn your hand vertical and trace down the length of your pointer toward your thumb and stop next to the knuckle. that spot there.)

most archers wear something to protect their fingers on the hand that draws the bow. even with that, they have callouses. without it, a lot of callouses, scars, and blisters.

most common draw uses three fingers on the string: pointer, middle, ring. the arrow sits between the pointer and middle. just like where the draw point is, this is not universal and do research if you’re doing something culturally important.

barebow means that the bow is bare of any instruments. no sight, no weights, etc. the most basic/traditional form of bow

a recurve bow is anything where the tips of the bow curve back around forward, away from the archer

a compound is what you think of as a modern hunting bow, and is recognisable by having wheels at the ends and three strings

arrows have three fletchings that form a triangle, the point faces the archer so that the flat of the arrow will pass the flat of the bow on release. the arrow sits on the side of the bow facing the archer

archers with a larger/raised chest will sometimes where a chest protect so that the string does not catch when firing (this is regardless of gender, i know several cis-men who need it as well)

string can also catch on the forearm that is holding the bow and creates bruises and welts if you don’t wear a protector. modern ones are small plastic and cover just the spot, with elastic holding it in place. traditional ones are leather and wrap all the way around, lacing up on the back of your arm like a corset.

there is literally so much more, but i feel like this is plenty to get you started, and as always, feel free to drop an ask in my box if you need something more!

“You’re Not a Good Writer.”

I once received a DM comprised of just that sentence. Nothing else. No constructive criticism or any reason as to why this person clearly agreed with my own view of myself.

For someone who has never told anyone in their real life that they write anything, reading something like this from an anonymous user only solidified in my mind the fact that this person was right.

I’m not a good writer.

After an embarrassing amount of minutes passed, in which I thought about deleting every story I ever posted, I decided to delete the message instead. Unfortunately, that didn’t mean I could delete the feelings it caused or change the fact that I’m not a good writer.

Two weeks went by and I didn’t write anything, let alone post. Then I received a comment on a story I had posted three years prior, one I’d written after a death in our family. The comment read, “Thank you for sharing this heartfelt story. I really needed this. I just lost my mom and this really got me today.”

I stopped thinking about being a good writer after that. I thought instead, “what if I had deleted my stories and that one person three years later hadn’t read it that day?”

Here’s what I realized: no one is a good writer.

Good means to be approved of, but stories aren’t created from approval. They’re built from life experiences, feelings, and emotions Therefore, the impact of anyone’s story isn’t good or bad. It’s a million other things.

Heartfelt.

Sad.

Funny.

Inspiring.

Romantic.

So to all the story writers out there, hold your head up, write what is in your heart, and never doubt that there isn’t at least one person out there that needs to read your story.

So, no.

We’re not good writers, but why would we want to be?

The past lives on:

Hired by Lucius himself, the Wyrmguard were tasked to assist the Ishgardian find his old drachen mail, armor that he had tossed out shortly after the war ended. It was a blast to the past for Cedric and Lucius, reliving their snowy days in the field, being tagged along by Prei and Amon who bravely faced the cold winds with a fighting spirit and one hurt ankle.

As they ventured further, they stopped at the statue of Haldrath, giving Lucius time to recount the story of the first Azure Dragoon and what being a dragoon meant to him. This lead them closer to the marked site where the fallen drachen mail might be.

Right off the bat, Amon found the shattered pieces of his drachen legplates, while Cedric found the drachen mail chest plates shattered and turned into a makeshift home for critters. Unfortunately for Prei, the gauntlets that were holding into the cliff by a sheet of ice were lost into the abyss as her presence disturbed the area. However, in high hopes, Amon was able to find the location of Lucius' battered, tarnished drachen helm, still lively with the power of the dragon blood. Painful memories surged through the dragoon, reminding him of the murders he committed and atrocities, but they also reminded him of his job and role, pushing the Ishgardian to seek a new future for his role.

As for the boots, two ferrets used them as hopping boots, hopping all the way down into the abyss to join the gauntlets.
