Synopsis: A small town is boring. This one is exceptionally so. Sure there's things to do, but in so many years those things stop being pastimes and start muddying into the object scenery. Especially without any friends to enjoy them with. Naruto understands this all too well, and with all of his friends leaving their town for big city universities, Naurto will have to become accustomed with that feelings all over again. Or so he thinks until he meets an old classmate of his that he doesnât remember..

Naruto leaned against the left back passenger seat window of Shikimaruâs Honda Civic with a long sigh.
âYou canât possibly be bored already Naruto, weâve only been on the road for 45 minutes."
Shikamaru says in that exhausted tone heâs always seemed unable to shake. The four of them, Shikamaru, Choji, Ino, and Naruto, are off to the city to enjoy a get together before their first years of college start. Shikamaru is heading somewhere quiet to take a gap year. According to him âwith all the hard work he put in, he deserves a break and some time to figure it all out. â Choji and uno are both going to far off cities in opposite directions. Choji is heading south while Ino is going to a northern school.Â
âHow far are we away from the place?â
Naruto asks with a distinct groan. Choji, from the front passenger, throws back a bag of chips from his lap and says with a mouthful
âFar. Now take some of these and be patient.â
Naruto takes the bag and then turns his attention back to the window.Â
âNaruto, why donât you just go on your phone?â
Ino points to the phone clearly in his pocket.Â
âNah I donât need it. Iâm better off looking out the window.â
Ino shrugs her shoulders and goes back to her phone to text. Naruto clicks his tongue a few times indecisively as he decides on a pastime. Cars race past them on the freeway. Red, grey, whiteâŠanother greyâŠanother whiteâman how he wishes people would paint their cars fun colors again. If he had a carâwhich heâll get soon enough!--heâd paint it something loud and bold, like himself! Naruto canât help but stare noisily inside the fast passing windows. Each life inside unfolds a little differently from the next car over. Some have families laughing and singing with each other, a few have couples paying more attention to each other than the road, and others hold stone-faced mannequins for people.Â
One car has a crotchety looking dude in the backâŠand Sakura in the front? Naruto's eyes latch on for longer than they shouldâve.
âWho the hell is that guy? And why is Sakura riding with him..gee he looks so irritable.â
As if the stranger could hear his thoughts, he snapped his head toward the window and gave Naruto a nasty look.Â
âOn second thought heâs more than irritableâHeâs ugly too.â
Naruto passed one right back, then gave his attention to another car.Â
â â The Museum â âÂ
The group pulls up to the building at about the same time. There are four groups riding in separate cars, five including Narutoâs. Their section of the parking lot looks a lot like a class field trip. Just about their entire homeroom class is there from Kiba to Ino with the addition of Temari and her siblings. As Naruto exits the car, he sees Sakura coming and exiting the drivers side.Â
He reaches out to hug her. Immediately Naruto notices someone behind her. Itâs the stranger. The young man is taller than him with raven hair and an uninterested look on his face. Nobody else but Naruto seems confused by his presence. Sakura moves on from Naruto before he can ask any questions though.Â
After a few seconds of staring the young man notices him and the two just stand there ... .awkwardly looking at each otherâŠ
Sakura notices and circles back.Â
âStop being weird you two and come on.âÂ
And with that, the group leaves the parking lot.Â
The greco-roman architecture surely helps the museum live up to its nameââPalace of Fine Artsâ Once inside, everyone splits into their preferred groups or pairs. Most of them stuck together with the people they came with. However, Shikimaru and Temari leavest their groups to awkwardly pair with one another and Sai leaves Sakura early on to walk with Ino. Sakura trailed off with Karin shortly after, their hands suspiciously close to touching. Once inside the groups split off and trail to different parts of the palace.
âYeah, or a movie, whichever we feel like.â
Ino called back, before disappearing, arm interlocked with Saiâs. Naruto stood in the center of the lobby with one other person. Sasuke. The groups parted too quickly. He didnât have time to pick someone to walk with, and no one called out to him as he waited so he got left behind. And with the worst possible option. He turned reluctantly over to Sasuke who didnât look any more excited than he did.Â
âMaybe if I don't say anything, heâll go awayâŠâ
Sasuke thought, avoiding eye contact best he could. But he can feel Narutoâs incovert staring. The two stand like this for several seconds. Each of them building up a minor sweat trying to wait each other out. While he didnât mind looking alone, it sure would be boring not to explore with someone. How was he going to get this weirdo to walk with him? HmâŠNaruto narrows his eyes for a second, thenâ
âSo I suppose youâre going to ask to walk with me huh? Seeing there's no one around ân allâ
He says confidently with his hands on his hips. Sasuke scoffs.Â
âPlease, Iâm fine walking on my own. Itâs you whoâs been gawking at me the entirety of 30 seconds.â
âIâNo! I was just asking cuz you seemed all gloomy ân stuff. I was tryna be courteous or whatever.â
Unwavering confidenceâfailed. Sasuke pivots in the opposite direction
âWell Iâm not, Sakura was right, you are obnoxious.â
And starts to saunter away. Heâd actually rather be home right now. He has work the next day. But for whatever reason he couldnât find it in himself to turn down Sakuraâs offer to come along. Usually he wouldnât have an issue as heâs done so many times before. But sheâs going away soon, and sheâs been nothing but nice to him, even during their short interactions at school. So he agreed just this once.
Naruto stands defeated as he watches Sasuke get further down the hall. He glances behind him, then at Sasuke, then back again.Â
âIf he wants to be mister loner over there then fine!â
But the sting lingers a little. Even after he makes way in the other direction.Â
The palace is full of stuff. Specifically balloons. They're everywhere. Balloons on the ceiling, balloons on the walls, balloons on the floor. Naruto's almost scared because heâs sure if he bends over heâll find a balloon up his ass. Each section of the exhibit is different. Some rooms have neon lights, while others are dimmer with spotlights pointed at specific areas. There are interactive bits, but with no one to do them with, Naruto passes them by. He thinks about joining one of the other groups, but they look happier amongst themselves so he doesnât.Â
âWell this was more boring than I thought.â
He thinks, nose in his phone. Naruto wanders aimlessly until he runs into a pillar. A surprisingly soft pillarâŠthat sucks its teeth at himâhuh? Naruto looks up to see Sasuke.
Naruto takes a step back. Of course he runs into him.
âWhatâre you following me now?â
Sasuke asks with a scowl.
âMe follow you? Yeah ok, like Iâd follow you, seems to me like youâre following me buddy.â
Naruto rolls his eyes. Of course this pretentious punk would think that.
âLike hell, I wouldnât follow someone as annoying as you.â
âYouâve got a lot to say about my personality, youâve been thinking about me the whole time youâve been walking? Pretty creepy!ââ
Naruto leans inches apart from him. Sasuke doesnât back down, instead he sends a fist into Narutoâs chest and says in a strict, demanding tone.
Naruto gears up to return one, Sasuke follows, pulling his arm back, but theyâre interrupted.
âDonât you two even think about it!â
Sakuras rushes toward them, leaving Karin to snicker behind her. Sasuke and Naruto fly off each other but not before earning a clean smack upside the backs of their heads. Little kids walk past them in awe and terror.Â
âReally you two come on, youâre in public!â
Sakura grumbled through her teeth.Â
âYeah well he started it.â
The two retort perfectly in sync.Â
âCan you just behave? I donât want to have to babysit you Naruto!â
âDonât start Sasuke, I donât want to watch after you either. God, 19 years old and youâre responding to Naruto's elementary school taunts.â
âYeah 19, way too old, Sasuke act your age.â
Naruto teases. Sasuke turns away with his arms crossed.Â
âYouâre pretty comfortable Sakura drags her hands over her face.Â
âJust. Get along you two. For me?â
They feel each otherâs unwelcoming energy melt down at her request. Sakura comes closer and places her hands on their shoulders, acting like a bridge between them.
âDonât make me ask twice.â
Her tone flips back to stern and her grip tightens.Â
Naruto smiles nervously. Sasuke nods reluctantly and she lets go.Â
âWeâll see you boys in another hour okay?â
Karin waves them goodbye as Sakura joins her back at their end of the room and they leave together.Â
âWell, we havenât gone in that direction yet, have we?â
Naruto motions towards the direction that Sakura came from.Â
Sasuke walks past him, not bothering to look at him as he passes. When he feels no one behind him, he stops.
âDo you need someone to tell you everything, jesus chrisââ
Naruto lights up and follows after.
âYeah, Yeah, hush, lets go have some fun!â
He throws an arm over his shoulder and leads him towards another exhibit
âNgh-Get your arm off me!â
Naruto and Sasuke walk at an amicable distance. Thereâs a lot of stopping and starting up again along the way. They stop for Naruto to tie his shoes, for Naruto to mistake a stain on a wall as artwork, at the food court so Naruto can eat obnoxiously loudâthat makes Sasuke's skin crawl. Actually, a lot of things about Naruto made his skin crawl. The way he canât walk in a straight line, the way he keeps licking his chapped lips, how little ability he has to walk in silence. . But what Sasuke canât say, even as his patience wilts away, is that heâs kinda enjoying himself.Â
Naruto carried an energy with him. One that Sasuke is uncharacteristically drawn to.Â
Because of that, Naruto isn't a poor person to enjoy a museum with. He insists on participating in every activity as if it were a competition, and the back and forth of winning and losing is..exciting. He wonders how he didnât notice the feeling before. Itâs so vibrant.Â
Naruto feels the same uncharacteristic pull. Donât get him wrong, heâs always been the extrovert. Always doing his best to be a good influence to those around him..well, his definition of a good influence. Heâs naturally competitive and extremely willing to push the boundaries of things or people in order to understand and coexist with it. And here, in the hour and a half that heâs known Sasuke for, heâs never wanted to push so bad. He tries to chop it up to the vibes. Maybe heâs a little nervous. Naruto canât help but notice Sasuke's quiet demeanor. Heâs got a sassy attitude, and his tone of voice carries a whole lot of bite under it.Â
The longer they walk though the more Naruto starts to think âthereâs something up with this guy. â Can he be blamed? Sasuke hasnât laughed once. Hasnât smiled or seemed impressed by anything here. The two of them donât speak a ton when looking at the still parts of the exhibit. But when Sasuke does make comment on a painting or sculpture itâs so pessimistic. Heâs all âthis must depict the cycle of sorrow and vengeanceâ or whatever. Itâs creepy! The paintings on the wall depict all sorts of things, one in particular shows a man running in the middle of a street. The sky behind him is full of balloons. The lamppoles that line the sidewalks hold balloons as lightbulbs, and the âpeopleâ standing at the bus stop are nothing but rubbery mannequins. The man himself is focusedâintent on reaching whatever it is heâs after.Â
âYou think he's running toward or away from something?â
Naruto points to the man with a curious expression. Confidently, Sasuke replies
âBut thereâs nothing behind him to run from?âÂ
Naruto tilts his head and puts a curled finger to his chin. Sasuke looks grimly at the painting, and without turning attention to Naruto says in a mellow toneÂ
  âHimself probably.â
Naruto opens his mouth to respond. Not with much thought, he doesnât really know what to say. Before he can, heâs interrupted by his ringer. Itâs Sakura letting them know to wrap up.
âWe better get going.â
Sasuke motions toward the hallway leading out the museum. When they find the group, everyone is already getting into their cars. Sakura pops up behind Naruto and rests a hand on his shoulder.Â
âYou have to ride with me Naruto, Sai wants to sit with Innooâ
She says playfully, loud enough for Ino to hear as she enters the car with Sai behind her.Â
âI donât know if he should ride with us Sakura.â
Sasuke takes a few steps back until heâs right behind her.
âHey, what's that supposed to mean?!â
. Naruto whips around questioning him from the other side of Sakura's shoulder.
âYou might attract trouble on the way staring into random cars.â
Sasuke leans to her other shoulder, to which Naruto follows, bringing Sakura with them.
âOh come on! I thought we were having a good time!â
âWith you? No wayââ
âIm not a jungle gym!â
Sakura slips free from the two and knocks them across their headsâŠagain. The two look away from each other, arms crossed. The rest of the group chuckle to themselves as they watch the three of them. Sakura blushes when she hears Karin laughing from her car.Â
âOh just get it in you two. Weâre going out to eat.â
They follow with minimal grumbling and sit on the far opposite sides of the car. Sakura has a nice car. Itâs cute like her and decorated with stickers and polaroid pictures. Naruto, not having been in the car since she got it at the end of senior year, looked over each one from his spot in the back.Â
âWow Sakura youâve sure got a lot of pictures. I donât even remember you taking these.âÂ
      Sakura blushes a little.
âYeah, I donât know I like having them. Theyâre nice memories.âÂ
 âSomeoneâs nosey.âÂ
Sasuke says, ignoring the fact that he looked at the pictures too when he first got in. Naruto rolls his eyes.
âSays you, whoâs in my business.â
There arenât many pictures, just some here and there. Each is filled with familiar faces. A group picture from the last day of school, a silly selfie during class, a few candids. Naruto grins triumphantly seeing a picture he took when sneaking Sakura's camera. Then it fixes curiously once his eyes land on three candids he doesnât recognize. They were of sasuke. Naruto stares at them for a bit. Naruto glances at Sasuke who glances back with his eye brow cocked. Â
           âWhat?âÂ
            âNothin.âÂ
âYouâve got one hell of a staring problem then.â
Muttered sasuke. Yeah nevermind. He actually doesnât care anymore. The drive continued in silence minus the music on the radio until they reached the restaurant.Â
The restaurant was nice. A light hung over the center of every table and every booth. All the color drained from the waiter's face as she counted out the 17 people in their group. Reluctantly, Naruto ends up next to Sasuke again. That's what he gets for hanging out with people who are all dating each other.Â
The conversations are all over the place. School, work, tv, anything thatâd cover over the sound of dated pop music. In each other's company, the laughter drowns out all the impending sense of doom everyone had tucked away when they came. Very soon, life would become too busy for leisure. Everyone would be figuring out life in cities far away from home. Numbers would inevitably get buried under new contacts and although everyone is too afraid or maybe too sad to admit it, they know this is their last dinner together for a long time. So they drink like the liquorâs free and the food is going to vanish from their plates. Sasuke sits between Naruto and Sakura, squished and pushed every direction but upward.Â
Sasauke observes in utter confusion, the shock on Naruto's face each time heâs brought up. Everytime someone mentions he was there during an event Naruto was certain he wasnt, each time Sasuke smiles and nods after being asked âdo you remember whenâŠ?â Naruto looks to Sakura then to the others in quiet shock.Â
Sasukeâs nondrinking works out great in the end. Because while everyone else has to call Ubers and book hotels nearby, or do dangerous calculations on who the best drunk driver is, Sakura, Karin, and Naruto get to enjoy a premium chauffeur (Sasuke). The three fumble into the car. The girls lean lazily against the car doors and Naruto sits in the front.Â
The drive is short. Sakura directs him to her house and she leaves with Karin after thanking him for coming along. Sasuke tells her it's no problem, tells her to tell her parents hello for him, and drives off a considerable distance before realizing he has an extra body in the car. Naruto.Â
âHey wake up, I dont know where you live.â
Sasuke takes a hand off the wheel to shake him. Nothing. Again
âNaruto! Wake up so you can go home!â
Silence. Sasuke looks around the car for something to whack him with, but Sakura's car is so ridiculously neat. Once he hits a red light, he digs into his pocket for his phone. It rings once, then twice, then three times with no answer. On the other end of the line Sakura is fast asleep on the couch, phone far away on the dinner table.Â
âOh youâve got to be kidding.â
Sasuke lets his head hit the steering wheel. Ough.
Of course this is what he gets stuck doing on a work nightâdragging an old classmate into his house. Once he finally makes it up the two flights of stairs leading to his apartment and pulls himself and Naruto through the door, Sasuke sits on the couch and throws Naruto on the floor in front of it.Â
He thinks, looking over Naruto's peaceful expression.Â
âI canât believe this is who Sakura wants to leave me with.â
He runs his hands over his face, then falls onto his side. There wasnât anything to do about it now though, so instead of harping on it he let himself drift to sleep.Â
Naruto wakes up the next morning to an empty apartment that is certainly not his and a crick in his neck. The pristine space is awfully plain. Naruto judged the lack of personality, then it hit him. Whose apartment is he in? This isnât the first time heâs ended up in a random person's house, but he surely doesnât prefer it. There arenât any pictures on the walls, no warm messages on hung wooden boards like sakura's house. Instead there are two pairs of shoes at the door and a cup on the counter in the kitchen. That's all there is to indicate any signs of life here.Â
Naruto stands up and scans the space once more. Should he wait for the owner to return? Should he leave and just hope no one knows the doorâs left unlockedâŠ.no, thatâd be rude. Or would it? After a few minutes of pondering, he decides itâs better to just leave. He leaves his spot in the living room, careful not to leave a trail behind him and shuts the door quietly.Â
Meanwhile, Sasuke has been long gone. His alarm went off at exactly 6:00am. By 7:30 he was out of the house. He didnât think to wake Naruto up. If heâs being honest, by the time he remembered that he was in his house, he was already halfway to Sakuras house. On the way though he couldnât help but think about him. Sasuke's memories of Naruto were short but they were some of the most vibrant. They have always been in each other's orbit somewhat. In elementary school they just kinda hovered around each other unintentionally. In middle school, when friend groups started to mix and everyone's angsty teenager years started to come through, they were classmates. They interacted occasionallyâusually in competition. By high school they knew each other and even hung out outside of school. So what gives? Why had Naruto forgotten him? It hasnât been that long since junior year, in fact itâs only been a year. It bothered him more than it should've.Â
Sakura walks out chipper than ever. She greets Sasuke and offers to drive the rest of the way.Â
âYou donât seem very hungoverâ
Sasuke comments sarcastically. Sakura plants a hand on her forehead and says with a smile,
âOh no Iâm beat. But yesterday was such a great day I couldnât wake up upset!â
âHow did you enjoy yesterday by the way? Wasnât it nice to get to see everyone again?â
Sakura asked, putting the gear into drive.Â
âIt was fine. I wasnât exactly expecting to bring one of my old classmates back to my house though.â
â...Oh is that what you were calling me about?â
Sakura responded cheekily. Sasuke didn't respond, he just looked at her expecting a half hearted excuse.Â
âSorry! I mustâve fallen asleep, it was an accident I swear!â
Sakura is a fun person to hang out with. Sheâs exceptionally smart and easy to talk to. At least thats what Sasuke thinks.Â
âWhat day are you leaving? Yknow for school.â
He inquires, letting his elbow rest on the door's armrest and hold his head by the window.Â
âFresh tomorrow morning.â
Her tone drops into something bitter sweet. Without Sasuke having questioned the way she said it, she explains herself.Â
âIâm really excited but also a little sad to go on my own. Iâll have to go to a new city, make new
frinedsâim gonna be kinda homesick.â
âI'm sure youâll be fine. Besides, shouldnât it be me who should be complaining? Youâre leaving me to handle the shop all on my own.â
She knows that what Sasuke really means to say is âIâll miss you too.â But of course when would he ever say that outloud? The idea of it makes her laugh.Â
The drive isnât very long. Before he knows it, the both of them are clocking in and waiting for customers. Heavy on the waiting part.Â
âI love coming to work early. Gives you time to wake up since itâs so slow!â
Sakura clips her nametag to her shirt.Â
âDonât get too comfortable, itâs still a work day.â
Sasuke settles at the register.Â
âYeah right. At this hour, the only people who could be wandering around are the unemployed.â
Sakura waves her hand dismissively before disappearing into a back section of the shop. Just then, the little bell on the door shakes with a loud ting!
âSakura youâre never going toâoh.â
âOhâ?? Sasuke slumps his shoulders hearing that familiar agitating grating voice. Naruto saunters up to the counter, placing a hand next to the clip board of papers.Â
âThatâs right! Sakura did tell me you two worked at the same placeâ!â
âWhy are you here, don't you have a job?â
âI-hey! Rude! I donât have work until the afternoon. I wanted to stop by and say hi to Sakura!â
Sasuke leaned back in his chair.
âWell sheâs busy right now.â
Naruto reaches over toward the small bell on the far end of the counter.Â
âYeah well I sure donât want to be stuck talking to you any longer.â
He says resolutely, rapidly ringing the bell. Sakura emerges from the back section shortly after.
âWhats going on?--oh.â
âJeeze whyâs everyone so unhappy to see me?!â
Naruto crosses his arms, albeit a little hurt. He hasnât even done anything (yet).
âWhat do you need, Naruto? Iâm working yâknow.â
Sakura joins them at the front of the store item in hand.Â
âYeah, the only people whoâd be walking around right now are the unemployed.â
Sasuke says plainly, earning a heavy fist the arm and a âdon't you mock meâ from Sakura.Â
âWell I was bored and in the area. Thought Iâd drop by. Plus I wanted to tell you about something bizarre!â
Narutoâs demeanor shifts from explanatory to excited.Â
âI woke up on the floor of some random person's apartment today.â
Sakura looks at Naruto then at Sasuke and begins to laugh a little.Â
âNaruto, that wasnât a random person's apartment, that was Sasuke's place. He took you with him since he didnât know where you lived.â
Naruto pushes off the counter.
âOh gee you took me back to your place?â
âHey don't make it weird! I didnât want you there either!â
âThen why didnât you just drop me off at Sakura's place? Iâve slept there before.â
âYeah that's a good question, why didnât you?â
Sakura placed a finger to her chin.Â
âI uh, didnât want to disturb her parents.â
âYeah right, You didn't think of that did you?â
Sasuke looks away from both of them. He in fact did not think of that. Suddenly Naruto remembers something much more important he has to ask.
âOh yeah when are you leaving Sakura?â
Sakura places down the object in her hand.
âTommrow morning.â
âReally? But thats so soon!?â
Naruto points to the calendar hanging on the wall by the door.
âNot really. School starts in less than a month. Iâm actually kind of behind. Everyone decided to leave today.â
âOh yeah why;s here still here then?â
Naruto motions to Sasuke as if he wasnt there.
Sakura hesitated. She goesto wave her hand and dismiss the question, not wanting to air out Sasukes business, but he pipes up instead.Â
He said curtly. Naruto turns to him excitedly.
âReally? Me neither. Looks like weâll be seeing more of each other then huh?â
Naruto almost takes offense to the resoluteness in his tone. Instead though, heâs reminded of his very adult responsibilities by his phone alarm.Â
âOh crap I gotta go! Text me before you leave so I can tell you bye okay?â
Naruto rushes out the door before Sakura can reply. And with that, Sasuke and Sakura were left to finish their work in peace.Â
Just like clockwork, Sakura leaves their small town behind just like everyone else did. Naruto watches her and her parents load into the car and fade into the distant traffic. Before she leaves, she rolls down the window and warns him to get along with Sasuke. He thinks about the implications of what she said. Would Sasuke really be a recurring person in his life? Not that he opposes it, but he hardly remembered him. So it makes him wonder what about him Sakura expects Naruto to get along so well with. It gnaws at him on the walk home yet by the time he arrives. itâs clear that only time would be able to tell him that.
