Iâm convinced if ppl on this site knew how crappy gifs look before you color them properly, they would appreciate editors more
for context reasons, this is how a gif I used in a recent gifset looks like without any adjustments/coloring whatsoever:
and here it is afterwards:
I truly donât think people realize how dingy and dark most movies and tv shows actually are so they canât appreciate the work and skill it takes to make gifs look the way your brain âremembersâ it looking.
Another before and after example:
This gif needed 6 different adjustment layers, not including the sharpening process, which is its own separate challenge. The blue window was also changed to green to keep the palette more consistent and to reduce the range of colors needed, because a wider range of colors generally results in worse gif quality since gifs only support a max of 256 (compared to the millions your monitor can display).
yeahâŠ
I was already going to reblog this because gifmakers need all the love, but the little lambie made sure that I was definitely going to do it.
dark scenes are truly the bane of every gifmakerâs soul
The ecosystem of tumblr fandom relies on gif makers - put some respect on their names!!

If you have Spotify reblog this and tag what your number one song on your âon repeatâ playlist is.
With more and more Ao3 authors restricting their works to the archive (due to AI scraping), they're going to be losing guest interaction. And probably generally feeling down because. You know. AI is stealing their hard work.
So! Now is a great time to stop by your favorite authors/stories and drop them some comments! They really appreciate it!
Folks, backup your Tumblrs, for real this time
To be clear, I don't have any news about any impending doom. But I've heard a bit more about what's going on with staff after the layoff of last week, and there are even less people than I thought still working here.
I don't think even the current staff know what's going to happen, but honestly, I don't see how the high ups could even pretend to intend to keep this place open while virtually unstaffed.
And of course, if the most despicable thing happens, you can find me at @[email protected] from any fediverse platform đ€·
for reference, OP is a former employee of Tumblr who tries to keep up to date with tumblrâs inner workings. please back your blogs up.
In your blog settings you have the ability to initiate a blog export, and this will generate a backup for your blog.
Fair warning though, if you've been on the platform for a long time this archive is likely to be quite hefty in file size. This blog I have had for 5 years with 22k posts, and the export from tumblr came to be 48GB. My previous blog I made in 2011 and has 95k posts, so needless to say I did not use tumblr's built in export to back that one up.
If you want more control over exactly what you back up from your blog, I recommend that you use tumblr-utils instead. It allows you to backup specific tags, post types, and to ignore posts that you did not create (reblogs where you've added a comment count as a post you created, to be clear).
To use it:
download and install python 2.7
download tumblr-utils
create an application on tumblr to get an api key
extract the tumblr-utils zip and open the tumblr_backup.py file in notepad
search for "API" and paste in your OAuth consumer key
then go back to the folder where you extracted tumblr-utils and choose open folder in terminal / command prompt, or type cmd.exe in the address bar while inside the folder
now in the window that opens it should show the current path, and you can type "py -2 .\tumblr_backup.py [your options] [your blog name]" and hit enter. Example:
Backing up just my original posts from this blog with this command came to 632MB rather than 48GB, and also gave me the option to save my posts in JSON format which will be useful for converting my posts to a new format for self hosting.
On that note I'm currently looking into figuring out a simple (and ideally free) way of self hosting a static site blog that utilises activitypub, and also converting my old posts to re-host on said blog.
This post series by maho.dev on implementing activitypub with any static site is my primary source of guidance atm if you also want to try figure that out yourself, as well as having an explanation for why you'd even want to do this if you don't already know
but if tumblr goes down before I get things sorted and write up a post about it then i'll be reporting back on it via my bsky, mastodon, and toyhouse accounts
if you dont have an account on any of these I'll also be sharing an update via my personal site's RSS feed, link of which includes an explanation of what RSS is and some feed readers you can use, I highly recommend checking it out as getting a feed reader is going to be the best way you can stay connected with people if they scatter across the internet!
tldr: download tumblr-utils to backup your blog more efficiently, introduce yourself to RSS and get a feed reader to stay connected with people, consider saving mine so you can find out how to self host your blog later if tumblr goes down
I am both.
#one weird counterintuitive aspect of being asexual #is that im more open to kinky or weird shit #im not HAVING kinky or weird sex it's all theoretical
Hey @rosierugosa I hope itâs okay that I stole your tags because YES.
Because sexual desire is so weird and alien to me, personally, I find myself more accepting of weird and alien sex: Iâm definitely not a monsterfucker in that I donât wanna fuck the monster, but I fully accept and respect all monsterfucking because hey, sex in general -- straight, gay, or otherwise! -- is already so weird to me. Wanting to fuck Chad McDude down the street is just as strange to me as wanting to fuck the mothman. So my attitude is...go for it, I guess! Hereâs a water bottle.
*pulls a water bottle from the cooler*
I never thought of it that way, but yeah. As a teen I was mystified at how anyone would just want to have sex with someone, like that was the goal. I understood getting off, sure, but to want to with the guy in chem class because heâs hot? Weird.
*hands over the water bottle*
Anyway, to each their own.
*gets out some orange slices*
And like, reducing hypersexuality in the queer community is an important conversation. We are more than our sexualities, all of us! Asexuals know that better than anyone. As such we should absolutely have spaces in our community where sex is de-emphasized. But for many people in the world sex is a natural part of their lives and what has, in the past, set the queer community apart is frank and open discussion of sexuality instead of shame. We should be trying to help the straight world adopt that frank openness instead of trying to assimilate into shame.
*restocks the lube counter*
*shows up 15 minutes late with a cooler full of gatorade*
Also don't forget about sex neutral and sex favorable asexuals! Asexuality, like most things, is a spectrum, and we tend to get left out of discussions regarding asexuality or boiled down to gotchas regarding ace people being in relationships with non-asexuals, but we exist and aren't any less asexual because of our decision(whatever the reasoning behind it may be) to have sex!
We are also just as tired of asexuality being used as a scapegoat for attacking kink in the queer community, since that attitude not only is bigoted bs, but it hinges on the assumption that ace people who have and enjoy sex just don't exist, which, news flash, we do!
Plus a lot of us are very kinky, just sayin', so when you support sex and kink as a natural part of the queer experience you're not just helping your fellow queer allosexuals, you're helping people within the asexual community as well!
Anyway there really are tons of reasons ace people understand why we shouldn't police what people do in the bedroom, and ace people across the spectrum don't want to nor should be used as a cover for anti-kink bullshit. It hurts us just as much as it hurts everyone else.
*passes out cups*
I've literally worked for a bdsm club

hi yâall i just wanted to put you onto this fundraiser for the buffalo nations grasslands alliance. theyâre trying to recoup some of the funds for black-footed ferret conservation on tribal grounds that the trump/musk administration has frozen, which is impacting not only the conservation efforts themselves but the livelihoods of the people working on them. the frozen grant is 1.1 million but this fundraiser has a goal of 50,000.
the fundraiser has 24 days left and has only reached 2% of its goal with 11 donations. black-footed ferrets are an endangered lazarus taxon that was thought to be extinct from 1979-1981 before being rediscovered by accident. theyâre a miracle of conservation and it would be horrible to lose them for good, not to mention (again) the impact of people working with these animals losing their jobs which is outlined in the fundraiser link. indigenous-led conservation efforts are extremely important for a wide variety of reasons and as someone in the zoology area i feel obligated to share this fundraiser to contribute to those efforts.
i know that things are hard right now and thereâs a lot of people and organizations all across the world that need help, so donât feel pressured BUT if you have extra money and you can contribute to this fundraiser or share it with people who can that would be great.
super cute black-footed ferrets ^
Boosting this here- black footed ferrets are perhaps a little more charismatic than we usually allow here, but they need all the help they can get!
Which basic childhood monster was the scariest to you as a kid?
Monster under the bed
Monster in the closet
Basement monster (grabs your ankles if you don't run up the stairs fast enough)
Tickle monster
Other monster not listed here
I wasn't scared of any of these as a kid

This has been driving me insane.
I used to be *good* at search. It was a whole thing - I found people's "lost songs" or their unknown-source childhood stuffed toy or whatever from Google.
Now, you can't search for the exact brand/design name of something and get accurate answers. It drives me spare on Amazon - if I search for XYZ and you don't have any, or you only have 2, tell me that.
I wouldn't mind if it said "Here are 2 XYZ. Shoppers also searched for..." Instead it'll just throw a random, barely-linked pile of results and you have to wade through every single one to see if the thing you want exists.
THIS. For ages I used to say that I had "high Google-Fu". I could find *anything* because I knew how to use strings to enhance searches. The string commands haven't even worked for well over a year or more, far before they put in this infernal (and often wrong!) AI BS on top.
I used to be able to search for recipes and easily eliminate unwanted ingredients with a -. For example I'd look for low-carb desserts but without the zillions that use peanut butter simply by searching for something like:
low carb chocolate dessert recipe -peanut
And I'd get a slew of on-point suggestions. For some time now if you do -peanut Google ignores the - and assumes you want recipes stuffed with peanuts.
Where it's even worse now is now you get directed to sites full of bogus AI recipes that don't even make sense. But they have peanuts in them.
I used to be able to use reverse image searches to find out who made that awesome art so I could give credit in my share. They've removed that ability entirely and replaced it with Lens, which is AI BS just showing you more like what you looked for. (Rebecca Watson complained about this in her recent video about JD Vance jizz cup rumours and I apologise for that sentence but...yeah. Watson is great, go find her on Youtube and subscribe because she went into detail about how Google has become less and less useful for debunking.)
This isn't just about Google inserting shopping ads instead of what you wanted to learn about. That's bad. But the results now are just *broken*. The tools we used to have to make searches better have been removed. Google no longer wants us to find the answers we seek, but the answers they want us to have, and that's super creepy and dangerous.
And the alternatives are either using Google in the back end or have other significant barriers to use.
This sucks.
Duckduckgo and all the other alternatives work this way too, now.
Verbatim search, guys!! Go to "Tools," and enable "Verbatim."
It's a pain in the ass, but it still works!
1) yay, thank you
2) WHAT THE FUCK WHY DID THEY HIDE IT
For all you Firefox users, here's an addon that forces verbatim mode to always be on:
Download unfuck-google for Firefox. This addon forces 'Verbatim' search on Google - removing all bs personalization and localization and let
This addon forces 'Verbatim' search on Google - removing all bs personalization and localization and letting you find results for what you type, not what Google thinks is in your head.
It also forces "Sort by Date" on Google News search.
In the flood of bad search results, I had forgotten about Google News giving me 2012 articles related to high-profile drama instead of whatever happened last month that I was actually looking for.
Once again John Oliver proves that you can do anything with money and lawyers
Oliver then proceeded to detail how with $50 and knowledge of the law he was able to successfully apply online to create a debt buying company named âCentral Asset Recovery Professionals,â or as Oliver put it, âCARPâ named after âa bottom-feeding fish.â
After setting up a rudimentary website for CARP, the satirical, but still real company was offered a $15 million package of medical debt for $60,000.
Oliver explained that the debt was out of statute, which means it is the kind of debt that a collector can only continue to collect, but not sue the debtor for.
Then, instead of chasing down the 9,000 debtors in the debt package as a normal collection agency would, Oliver decided to stage the largest one-time giveaway in television history and work with the nonprofit RIP Medical Debt to forgive the $15 million with no consequences for the debtors.
Okay but now I know what I want to do of I get rich?
You dont have to be rich to do a bit of this actually
RIP Medical Debt is a charity (and therefore takes donations). They buy the rights to medical debt and then forgive them. So far theyâve forgiven over 1B in medical debt.
So a little ray of hope for someone out there today.
Donating $10 buys $1,000 of medical debt. This is real, it works, and weâve done it ourselves. You can too.
As of June 29, 2024, the charity is still active under a new name, Undue Medical Debt
Signal Boost!!!
If youâre Catholic this is a great thing to do for the Jubilee year by the way. Forgive debts and set captives free!
Now renamed as Undue Medical Debt:
Undue Medical Debt makes it easy for donors to make an impactful difference in the lives of those struggling with medical debt.
I got a letter recently letting me know that a $3k medical bill from an emergency room visit in 2018 had been purchased by Undue Medical Debt and destroyed. Gone forever. They were very clear that I didnât have to do anything, but they would appreciate it if I would talk to people about it to spread the word about what they were doing. Fucking phenomenal.
