One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.
The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.
And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.
And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.

Jesse has to die because he's gay. He doesn't die because he chooses not to be gay, he leaves Freddy (his homosexuality) behind after all the pain he has caused other people for being queer and this kiss from a girl he wasn't even into at the start brings "him" back. And then he dies anyways because of horror movie bullshit crazy endings
Your interpretation is valid. However, I don't see the movie that way.
Featuring long-ass explanation:
Jesse hates his own Homosexual feelings, and Freddy exploits the fact that they bring Jesse to his weakest state mentally. Then, it's easier to possess him. This might seem nitpicky, but it's an important distinction: Freddy is Not a manifestation of Jesse's gay feelings. Freddy's intent is to manipulate Jesse into believing that's the case though. In actuality, Freddy isn't a representation of Gay feelings; he's really a representation of monstrous/predatory feelings. Jesse fears his homosexuality, because he thinks it's the same as monstrous, pedophilic tendencies. He thinks he is like Freddy when he has gay thoughts. Freddy wants to further build that association and internalized homophobia. To be clear, Jesse, and gay people in general, are not monsters or pedophiles in reality. That's ultimately why Freddy fails to permanently control Jesse. Freddy is trying to get him to believe a lie.
Evidence that this is a lie is shown by who the victims are. Freddy kills Jesse's best friend and their gym teacher which are people Jesse is attracted to, because he's gay. In contrast, Jesse distinctly does Not kill his little sister. Freddy would have done that, because he is a monster. However, Jesse would never do that. He's not attracted to his sister, not just because he's gay, but because being attracted to children is real monstrous behavior. Jesse's a good person, despite his own internal belief that his gayness makes him evil. This is how the narrative shows that the conflation of homosexuality and pedophilia is exactly what Freddy preys on.
Furthermore, I don't see Lisa's actions as turning him straight. To me, Jesse comes off as a bisexual character. He has heterosexual feelings for her while also having gay thoughts. That's why eventually it's ANY connection to Jesse's own sexuality that brings on thoughts of Kruger (and his gross tongue). Jesse has built such a strong connection between his "perverse" homosexual feelings and Kruger that now his "normal" heterosexual feelings are infected too. His sexuality (regardless of it being homo or hetero) is supposed to be positive, but he's terrified of it. I think, Lisa is actually supposed to represent unconditional love rather than heterosexuality. She doesn't quit on Jesse when he seemingly goes full Freddy. She is able to rescue him, because of her relentless persistence to support him. When her dad tries to shoot Freddy/Jesse, she stops him. She only stabbed Freddy/Jesse, because he asked her to (the whole "please kill me" bit). After Jesse metaphorically comes to terms with having gay thoughts and realizing they don't make him monstrous (when he sheds the burnt Freddy skin), she continues to be with him. She'll always love him regardless of what gender he's attracted to. Even if he thinks he's a monster, rapist, or pedophile, because he's not actually any of those things. And, She knows that.
Interestingly, the movie goes out of its way to establish that Jesse is not talking to Lisa about his problems. If he had, she could have affirmed to him that he's not terrible and that he can win the fight against Kruger for his body way earlier. That is what she tries to do with Nancy's diary at the pool party, but it's too late. Maybe her words would have been more impactful before two people died. At that point, Freddy has already spent the whole movie manipulating and isolating Jesse to believe what he wanted. Jesse fully believes his homosexuality makes him evil, and that's why he tells Lisa she's not listening to him by the stairs. In the conversation by the stairs, he also insists she isn't listening, because she doesn't believe he's responsible for the murders like he does. She is listening though, and he's not responsible. Freddy killed those people. Jesse falsely believes Freddy's evil is an inextricable part of him (when, in reality, it's just the non-evil gayness that's an inextricable part of him) and he's responsible for Freddy's actions. Eventually, by the end of the movie, Lisa does get her message of unconditional love across with a kiss and confession. I see those as physical acts to prove she meant what she said, rather than conversions to straightness. She's a 'Ride or Die' kinda girly, and I love her for it.

I need to talk about the way Wake Up Dead Man handled religion because it was so delicately done. The overall thesis, I believe, is that religion is something that can be used for both good and evil, something shown in the lighting as Benoit Blanc talks about his disgust with the church and Jud talks about his faith. They did so much with light and the church building, Blanc is against the grey empty background of the church in darkness, Jud is against the windows and as he talks the sunlight begins to pour into the church.
As a person who is religious, the lack of a cross in the front of the church distressed me, but I think to anyone it was such a good way to clearly display that something was lacking in this place. It made such a blank and ugly space. When we ultimately learn the name of the girl who dragged it down, it fully represents the lack of "grace" (goodwill) that is found in this church. As someone who left my childhood church over queer issues and who is disgusted by the lack of grace in many religious people, I loved this. And the image of grace restored at the end! The church that was used for evil, isolation and hatred by Monsignor Jefferson Wicks is restored to grace, warmth, and love by Jud. He also removed the towering pedestal to preach on, and throughout the movie Jud was positioned at the same level as others or lower, while Wicks was either physically higher or filmed from an angle to make him seem above others.
They also took a moment to show the importance of religion when Jud talked to Louise, a woman he didn't even know whose mother was dying of cancer. She needed someone to talk to, we don't even know if she's religious, but having someone to listen to her and pray with her was what she needed at that moment. This leads Blanc, someone who explicitly wants to tear religion down around him to get to the truth (and who smashed an image of Jesus) to allow the murderer to have her last confession in accordance with her beliefs and not be exposed in front of her peers.
It was very much a knife can cut but it can also prepare food to feed the hungry. It was just masterful and very human and I loved it.
tbh in retrospect i think bucktommy was the funniest relationship in the show. two grown men spend six months dating each other because they both really want to fuck some other guy but can't admit that this is the guy they'd rather be dating. the kind of behavior you might expect from like. the only two queer teens in a bigoted small town. not two men in los fucking angeles with whole ass careers. and mind you the whole time said other guy is completely unaware that this is going on and is just kinda thinking "my best friend and his boyfriend :) time to hang out with my best friend and his boyfriend :)" while carrying out an emotional affair with the doppelganger of his dead wife that will unbeknownst to him result in him spending a month living in el paso working as an uber driver.
