There has never been a point in any of our lifetimes where the US wasn't contributing to some atrocity or war crime or SOMETHING somewhere in the world. There just hasn't been.

The president isn't a king, and can't unilaterally impose his will on the country. There is not - and will never be - a candidate who can just wave their hand and only make the Good and Morally Pure Things you want to happen happen. That is not the system we have.

But things can get better, and things can get so much worse.

There is no scenario where refusing to vote and letting Trump win causes FEWER marginalized people to die.

Okay so my sister works in politics. She's a people manager, and was a campaign manager for Bernie Sanders back in 2020. This year, she's a campaign manager for a guy named Cornell West, and he's the only person I know running on a platform that will actually make shit better. Cornellwest2024.com if you have the time. -stop funding the state of Israel

-end the Israeli apartheid of Palestinian people and push for a program for Palestinian justice and liberation

-Abolishing poverty and homelessnes

-deprivatizing Healthcare and instating universal Healthcare

-codifying an equal rights amendment for LGBTQIA people

-reparations to address unpaid debt to black US residents

-forgive all student debt and free tuition for all state college students

And so much more

His chance of winning is a shot in hell, and obviously he can't do everything but if he wins, maybe we'll actually start going somewhere with this damned country.

Setting aside, for a moment, that there is no way for a third-party candidate to win - not "It would be really hard", it will not and can not happen under the current system, and voting Independent is a good way to get Trump elected - but setting that aside for a moment:

None of those are things the president can just DO either.

That is fundamentally not how being president works.

Any president seeking to abolish student debt would have the exact same problems with doing that that Biden has had.

Constitutional amendments are a whole THING, and we haven't even managed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, and there is absolutely no chance of one passing right now, in this political climate that - encouraged by Trump! - calls queer people "groomers" and seeks to ban them from public life. 3/4 of states have to ratify it and that's just not a thing that's happening right now or that the president could do.h

Abolishing poverty - there are limits to how much money the President can distribute by executive order and it falls VERY short of what it'd take to abolish poverty. This would have to go through Congress.

Pretty much all of these things would have to go through Congress, which has all the same problems that it's had under Biden and that it's had under Obama.

Voting third party can increase availability of that party to vote for in some states, however. I think it’s more of a strategy to do this on the state level, but it’s reductive to be upset with people, many of whom are queer people of color, for not voting for Biden. I’m taking my lumps and voting for him, but an also racist panderer is not someone people should be pushed into voting and guilting people is the lowest form of propaganda. It doesn’t make them more likely to vote, it makes them buckle down on NOT voting.

This probably sounds obvious, but I learned today that prisoners aren't protected by OSHA regulations, and that this is another reason why employers are so eager to utilize this modern slavery. It's only a couple cents an hour, less transportation costs than the overseas sweatshops, and if you want people to work with hazardous materials without proper training? That's fine too! Prison labor is the ultimate free market solution!

If you want to really change the world, prisoner rights and prison reform is the way to go. Removing the ability of the ruling class to effectively punish the population frees everyone to challenge them in meaningful ways. Bees do not suffer when beekeepers take their honey, because experienced beekeepers do not take all of their honey, in fact, they leave plenty of honey left for the bees to consume over the winter. If we do not collect their honey, 1 of two things will happen.

1. they will leave for a bigger home. Which at first seems fine until you remember that bees are dying very quickly out in the wild.

or

2. They will start using the areas that they reserve for their young as a place to make more honey. This is bad because if no more young are being produced, then the hive will start to die out because no new workers are coming into the world, and the average live only 150 days, so it would also mean the loss of more bees.

So yeah, eating honey isn’t inhumane at all. In fact, you’re helping the bees by eating what they produce and giving money to the bee keepers who are the ones making sure that the hive will keep being healthy.

Other animal products that are absolutely fine to use because they produce it in excess:

- Wool. Sheep need to be sheared or their wool will get excessively large, matted and gross. Its legit just a haircut. Calm down and use wool instead of whatever fake acrylic microplastic shit they have in stores now. Wool is super warm, insulating, and guess what! It grows back! Its a renewable resource and all the sheep want in return is some good pasture and protection from predators.

- Eggs. I’m not talking about storebought eggs. Go to your local farmer’s market. Find someone around with chickens/ducks. These birds produce eggs literally every day and will not stop unless they are molting, brooding, or kept in the dark for most of the day. Like I am not joking when I say you can very easily find someone with poultry and they will beg you to take some eggs. Theres so many. Please. Take some duck eggs. I dont want them. I had 8 laying ducks last year. Thats 8 eggs every day. Thats 2 dozen eggs every THREE DAYS. Thats SO MANY EGGS PLEASE TAKE SOME EGGS

Reducing animal cruelty does not mean abolish the use of animal products. Go eat honey. Go use wool. Go find a friend with birds and eat eggs, or get your own. Just because it comes from an animal does not make it cruel.

Okay so I’m kinda still just waking up rn, but I had a peek at this app and there is a TON of fics on this thing. Like around 7.5k works? I only checked the DMC category, but I saw a ton of familiar names and fics listed.

Is anybody around who would know more about this sort of thing? Is reporting the app enough to give it a good old double barrel fuck off? Would this be counted as going against AO3’s ToS? I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to even MENTION money on that site, so how would that go for an unaffiliated app?

@synchronmurmurs Unfortunately I found all 43 of my works that are posted on AO3 are on that app; there’s a bunch of “midroll” ads when you’re scrolling down my author feed, as well as a header as every time you click on one of my stories to read.

I’m super not pleased that some rando is making money off of the things that I post for free on AO3. I’m also worried that this is going to end up being some IP thing?? Because all of my works are based on characters I didn’t create, so I hope this doesn’t end up coming back to bite me in the ass instead?

I’m also having a heck of a time reporting the app through Apple’s App Store, so if anyone knows the best way, please lmk!

I just tried to reblog another post about this but couldn’t for some reason.

This is really worrying.  Apart from the fact it’s a violation of what everyone who posts their writing on AO3 has accepted and signed-up for, it may also, as a couple of the commenters above point out, have serious legal implications. 

As I understand things, fanfiction is only legally allowed in certain very specific circumstances and one of the most fundamental of those is that no-one may make money off it.  But if someone is, I have no idea how that may affect both our status as fanfiction writers, or that of AO3 and the Organisation for Transformative Works itself.

Please report and challenge this in any way you can!

I contacted AO3 Support this morning and have just had a reply.  This is what they say:

“The OTW does not own the works posted on the Archive – they are all owned by their respective authors. For that reason, although the OTW can (and does) rely on trademark law to make sure that people don’t make confusing apps that would make people think the OTW or AO3 is associated with them, there’s nothing we can do about apps or services that contain works owned by AO3 users. That is up to the authors themselves, who own the copyrights in their fanworks. “Many sites have procedures (known as DMCA takedown procedures) that allow copyright owners such as fan-authors to request that their works be removed. The Fanfic Pocket Archive Library may have such procedures.   Regardless of whether those procedures exist, copyright owners can always demand that their works be removed from places they are not authorized, and as a matter of copyright law, sites should comply with such demands. “The Apple App store also has procedures for reporting apps that infringe copyright:  https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/appstorenotices/#?lang=en The Google Play store has similar: https://support.google.com/legal/troubleshooter/1114905 ” To be clear, to the best of our knowledge, the app is not wholesale scraping and storing data - they’re displaying content from the Archive in a very heavily modified format. The app functions as a very heavily modified site skin, with a few extra functions provided with your data within the app. Because the app’s subscription fee may be explained as “to support the app’s code base” and not for the content itself, it is within bounds. Our only suggestions are for the creators of the works to issue DMCA takedowns to the app developer, and to the appropriate app store if they find the developer response unsatisfactory. We are also receiving reports about apps from a developer called Woodsign. We don’t have a comment regarding these apps at this time.”

So it seems my initial fear that this could be onstrued in legal terms as someone making money off fanfiction, thus awakening the IP dragon OTW do so much good work to keep under control, is mistaken.But just the same every one of us whose work appears on this app is having our copyright infringed.

Hopefully the two links will come through ok, for reporting the app to Apple App Store and Google Play store.

I gather from @ibonekoen​ that marking all one’s work on AO3 as for registered users only (under “Privacy” in the same section as tags, when you upload or edit) prevents the app from taking it; not sure how that works but passing the tip on.  I have 169 fics on AO3 so it’s going to take me a while to do that with all of mine!

As an alternative to only letting registered users access your works, since this prevents readers who don’t have an ao3 account from reading your fics, you can add a # at the start of your author’s notes and at the start of every chapter. It throws off the app, messing up the access from it, and the content won’t show at all.

Good news, the app and a lot like it have been taken down from Apple’s and Google’s stores.

Bad news. OTW posted an official response to this earlier today and it confirms the above stance. This is for fanwriter to deal with. Not only will OTW/AO3 do nothing, they won’t protect us from any legal trouble that may come of having our fics monetized. Yes at least one of those apps straight up stole and reposted fics, then monetized it. 

And believe me when I say that depending on how aggressive a legal department is feeling about an IP it is holding, whether or not you consented to that may matter squat. They’ll sue you anyway and good luck defending yourself from a mastodon like say, Disney, if they get pissed about your Star Wars or MCU things.

That was what OTW was created to protect us from, being sued by IP holders, and part of that was that we can’t monetize our stories. We can’t even post a link to a kofi account.

But with this OTW have made a statement that what happens off the archive is no concern of theirs, certainly not legally. No matter that it was stolen from them. They’re going to take no steps to protect us, neither technically nor legally. Not now nor in the future. If our shit gets stolen, we’re on our own.

There literally is no reason any more to post on AO3 or to donate to them. Because they’ve betrayed their main purpose in existing, the whole foundation on which they were founded, name to protect fan creators. And OTW just said, “fuck that!”.

And people are literally thanking them for it.

it's interesting to me that torture just works to us, as a literary device. It's everywhere in movies and stories and whatnot, from big-budget dramas to little grindhouse short stories. It fits neatly into the requirements of plot: character doesn't want to offer information, Gets Tortured, has to offer information.

the issue with this is that it isn't how it works.

torture is a display of power. It fouls interrogation, this is known; a person being tortured will tell you whatever you want to hear to make it stop, which is more often than not a lie, made up on the spot, or if the truth an incomplete and useless version of it. It isn't generally done for information's sake anyway, but as a form of what the ancient Greeks called hybris, the violent exhibition of your power over another person.

This is, every once in a great while, done right in fiction, but it's a challenge to write vs. the idea that it's a shortcut to one character revealing plot-critical information to another. Pretty much every form of torture works this way, even the ones that are legally permissible. Psychological torment or physical discomfort also produce an animalistic desire to escape harm and foul interrogation. The forms of torture the cops can do? The cops do it not to gain information (or if they think it will, they're lying to themselves) but because it makes them feel powerful.

There's probably a master's thesis in it for somebody studying the rise of torture as a plot device since the beginning of the war on terror and the contemporaneous development of the Broken Windows theory of policing. I'm not really aware of any similar level of disconnect between what Works in fiction and what happens in real life!

There is no "after the revolution." No "ideal world." I don't care how much progress we make, we will always fail someone, hurt someone, and the best thing we can do is accept that, and keep striving to make it better as we go.

And don't get me wrong, I don't say this to discourage anyone from trying to make that ideal world. Quite the opposite.

I feel like it's very naive to continue to approach these big changes we want to make in the world as if there's an "after it's all over" when we don't have to worry about it anymore.

We should always be striving to make life better, even when life seems pretty damn good.
