It makes me sick when I see Russians on Pinterest saving photos of Ukrainian traditional costumes, jewelry, and other cultural elements into boards called things like “Malorossiya Province,” “random folk stuff,” or “Ukrainians in Russia.”

Even modern photos with Ukrainian captions aren’t safe from being saved and relabeled in that same colonial, imperial language. And no matter how many times we speak up and ask them to leave our photos alone, they never listen.

The way westerners view the language situation in Ukraine baffles me. No, Ukrainians aren't some magical bilingual nation, which is bilingual just because.

There is no difference between a Ukrainian not being able to speak Ukrainian and an Irish person not being able to speak Irish. Both are the result of imperialism and oppression.

But for some reason people are upset at the fact that English is dominant in Ireland, but dislike derussification (restoration of national identity after centuries of russian imperialism, oppression and genocide).

Why? Because while imperialism is evil, its definition is obviously "evil western europeans with boats". Also, how can Russia be evil when it has bears, snow, vodka and balalaikas?

Decolonisation is good, unless it's in Ukraine (or any other victim of russian terror, but people dislike Ukraine the most for some fucking reason)

I think people are just... incapable of understanding that white (or mostly-white or seen-as-white-when-convenient) populations CAN be colonized. So they "know" Russian colonialism isn't real, at least not in Ukraine, and Ukrainian efforts to remove Russian influence aren't really decolonial, because Russians and Ukrainians are both white.
