Saw on the local news the other day how Salvation Army was struggling for donations during the pandemic and all I said was “Good.”

Its so wild to me that so many young people nowadays think fanfic is something that only kids and teens do.

Back when I first got into online fanfic communities as a young teen, the majority of the fanfic communities were as they are now - adults. Minors were the minority (no pun intended). Minors who admitted to being minors were even more of a minority, because we knew damn well that if we wanted our smut - or wanted others to read our smut - then we had to make the adults think that we were One Of Them.

And having those cross-generational friendships was fantastic! I didn’t have much opportunity in my real life to have social interaction with adults who weren’t either family or friends of family, and being able to interact online with adults as ‘peers’ was really good for me. It gave me a much more varied view of things, and also gave me a fantastic community of people with more life experience than me whom I could turn to for advice.

And I know that, just like me, all those people are still reading and writing fic 25+ years later. And those who have sadly passed on were reading and writing fic right up until their deaths.

It’s not unusual to be reading/writing fanfic in your twenties - or in your thirties, forties, fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, etc.

You’re never too old for fandom, no matter what anyone else says.

‘Being in fandom in your thirties is cringe!’ Bullshit! Putting an age limit on being in fandoms is cringe. Like some of the BEST fanfics and fanart is done by adults. You’re never too old for creativity. However, you are too old for bullying people about their interests.

Ben and Mal work in theory but long term I don’t think they would last.

Mal doesn’t feel secure with her high place of power (and generally doesn’t make good decisions when it comes to the role), and Ben isn’t guaranteed to stay around. Who’s to say that he wouldn’t have dreams of a different girl one day and catapult him and Mal’s life to be with her?

In D2 it seemed like Mal only came back to Auradon and got back with Ben because she wasn’t top of the food chain like she used to be on the Isle and she felt pressured to fix things after he’d gotten kidnapped for her.

FUCKING THANK YOU!!! I love them both as characters but their relationship is TOXIC!!! Not to mention, Mal would be a shit queen unless she worked on herself more. Like she has a TON of emotional baggage she needs to work through and solve. In D2 and D3 she lies to Ben and her friends CONSTANTLY in order to get them to do what she wants. She says she’s not like her mother but she’s manipulating the people around her to get her desired outcome.
