A child can also feel emotional distress when their parent is physically present but emotionally unavailable. Even adults know that kind of pain when someone important to us is bodily present but psychologically absent. This is the state the seminal researcher and psychologist Allan Schore has called "proximal separation." Given that the child's dependence is as much emotional as physical, in normal circumstances a child who senses emotional separation will seek to reconnect with the parent. Once more, the parent's loving response will flood the brain with endorphins and ease the child's discomfort. Should the parent not respond, or not respond adequately, endorphins won't be released, and the child will be left to his own inadequate coping mechanisms—for example, rocking or thumb-sucking as ways of self-soothing or tuning out to escape his distress. Children who have not received the attentive presence of the parent are, as we will see, at greater risk for seeking chemical satisfaction from external sources later in life.
From 'In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction' by Gabor Maté.
Another consequence is the entrenchment of addictive behaviours among young people. Research on both humans and animals has repeatedly demonstrated that extensive peer contact and the loss of adult attachments lead to a heightened propensity to addiction. Peer-reared monkeys, for example, are far more likely to consume alcohol than mother-reared ones. "Peer affiliation," according to a review article in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, "is possibly the strongest social factor in predicting the onset and early escalation of adolescent substance use." It is commonly thought that peer affiliation leads to drug use because kids set bad examples for each other. That's part of the picture, but a deeper reason is that under ordinary circumstances, adolescents who rely on their peers for emotional acceptance are more prone to being hurt, to experiencing the sting of each other's immature and therefore often insensitive ways of relating. They are far more stressed than children who are well connected to nurturing adults. Kids are not cruel by nature, but they are immature. They taunt, tease and reject. Those who have lost their orientation to adults and look to the peer group instead find themselves having to shut down emotionally for sheer protection. As we have seen with children abused at home, emotional shutting down—what in a book I co-wrote with Dr. Gordon Neufeld we call "the dangerous flight from feeling"—greatly increases the motivation to use drugs.
it's almost like children are at their healthiest i.e. most able to exercise their autonomy when they have a robust support network of more capable and experienced others (i.e. adults) to help them navigate the difficulties of the world as opposed to exclusively relying on other children who are not equipped to emotionally nor materially support them, and anyone who is truly in favor of childrens' rights should be in support of their right to a compassionate and supportive household as opposed to encouraging the idea that adults are Evil Oppressors and children should just Stop Being Around Adults if they're being treated poorly
There's a lot going on right now...

got a good thing going where these bandits give me a half share of whatever loot they pull from adventurers i send their way & the best part is i don't even need to lie or anything since every hero is born with the unshakeable belief in their ability to win a fight against ten guys at once. just gotta say "we've got bandit trouble in the west, let me mark it on your map" and a week later i get $15 from Wulfric the Hound on cashapp
i exist and i love you
I have a very "I paid for this blender so everything getting blent" attitude about owning a mortar and pestle. I didn't pay for these beautiful tools of smooth black-grey granite just to have them sit on a shelf, these beauties are getting used at every excuse. I'll use them to mush chickpeas, I'm this close to using them to make mashed potatoes. There's just something so grounding and inherently human about it, I'm using two rocks to grind up seeds and nuts like they did back in the day when my ancestors were fucking neanderthals.
I just don't give a fuck, everything getting pestled. This is the act that made us human. I'm gonna make these two rocks do the chewing for me to spend less headspace for big jaw and more headspace for big brain. Crunch crunch bitch, I'm about to go prehistoric on your ass.
Now I feel really lame just using mine to crush cat medication into powder to hide it in food for the creatures I've domesticated. I need to use these two rocks to smash something for human jaw purposes.
The thought has never occurred to me before, but around the time when people were figuring out how to use plants for medicines, and going about domesticating animals, the first incidents of "how do I provide medical care for this animal who has no intention of willingly letting me do that" probably happened around that same time.
why does everybody hate me [remembers my behaviour and personality] why dont they hate me more
hey. hey, you, us american adult who has to file taxes.
that shit has to be done by wednesday. it's almost april 15.
do not panic, you got this. this is just to help make sure you got this by wednesday. wednesday, april 15. you got this.
also google your state + "state return free file" and the state's tax dept website probably has a list of services that will e-file your federal AND state returns for free if you meet the income restrictions.
(you probably do.)
fuck turbotax. there are better, still easy options not trying to nickle and dime your broke ass for this nonsense out there, and you can probably use a few of them to file fed AND state for free.
by wednesday.
wednesday, april 15. 2026.
you got this.
Here's the official IRS website's list of free filing services. I've used both FreeTaxUSA® and OLT, and they both let you file state and federal returns together.
missing msr so i drew them
Hilariously cisgender question from this counseling screening thing im filling out, lmao. Like, I know what they're getting at, but... this opens such a philosophical can of worms. Did i have a Gender when i was born? Does gender start at conception? Without remembering the events of my own birth, how can i be certain that I didn't quietly identify as a ze/hir from ages 0-3 months? much to think about

can we kill Charlie kirk again that would just really cheer me up
I can tell my evil advisor has been feeling down lately so I've been pretending to take big sips from his cursed chalice and then roaming the palace grounds groaning and clutching my abdomen. Lowkey I know it's deceptive but I can tell it's really cheering him up. I heard him evilly cackle for the first time in weeks. WIBTA if I keep doing this
hrt should be free and they should give it out at every medical clinic
