funniest moment in moby dick is when they meet another captain who lost a limb to the white whale and ahab goes like “and dost thy blood not boil, aye, and the very marrow of thy bones too, to know that the wretched creature and very devil of the sea that harmed us both still draws breath??” and the ship captain is like no i’m fine, it wasn’t the whale’s fault or anything. i mean imagine actually holding a grudge against a fish lmao that’s actually the funniest thing i’ve ever heard and ahab goes you don’t know what the FUCK you’re talking about. and stamps his foot so hard he breaks his ivory leg
I'm gonna be real explicit because some of y'all are dumb as rocks. If we don't pay for their overpriced bullshit, they will have to make it be more reasonably priced bullshit. Do not buy $70-$80 video games. Don't fucking do it. I don't care that you own every Mario kart and Mario party and Zelda game and that's what you base your personality around. You're gonna have an identity crisis for like 2 months and then they'll lower the prices because we all did good and didn't buy them, and then you can have your favorite piece of shit game, ok?
I cannot believe there's absolutely no way to watch free shows and movies anymore, there are too many paid streaming platforms and pirating websites have viruses and ads preventing you from watching it uninterrupted((.)) id rather follow the rules and purchase media moving forward because it is too inconvenient. Seriously, free and no ads or viruses with 1080p streaming is DEAD.
Exactly! It's freaking annoying when I want to watch movies but I would have to subscribe to like 24 different services . Just to watch the shows that I like.
i like using streaming apps but there are waaaay too many and they're all stealing my data .i wish there was a secure and organized way to have millions of shows and movies available one one app. but alas. we've truly gone full circle back to cable + now it spies on you. its a real shame. i dont want to fill my device storage with tons of boring and stupid cash grabs.
Don't u hate it when ur finally getting over your (canonically almost world-ending) situationship so u try maybe kinda flirting with a man u meet at some fancy party (or w/e) only to find out later that he's the estranged brother of your best friend and u were attracted to him BECAUSE he reminds you of said best friend.
Tldr: rumi doesn't realise she's talking to miras brother (he really reminds her of mira ie same eyes, same speech pattern etc, but rumi doesnt quite realise it). Her brother knows who she is ofc and figures that he should probably keep his distance, but rumi reminds him of mira and he can't help but want to spend some time with, if not his sister then with his sister's new family. (Also the Japanese movies mentioned are her brothers fav that he showed her when they were younger, so he's taken a back when rumi mentions that mira watches them with r and z the way that she used to w him)
EDIT: I'm just now seeing the typo in the last text panel for rumi FCK (your not youre)
Also rumi is mocking the whole corporate jargon vocab at the end there
Also the lighting at the start on his face is supposed mirror miras bit in the golden mv (for in my head they are foils/mirrors or w/e). And their meeting is reminiscent of how rumi met mira too (I think I made a post abt that ages ago?)
You can pry my hc that mira and her brother are so alike (physically obvs but low key in many other ways too) from my cold dead hands. serving cunt is a hereditary trait. They come from a farming family (An aura farming family):
Also I think it would be funny if not everyone assumes that huntr/X killing demons on-stage is part of the act like her brother sees the whole boss battle w gwi ma on TV and is like "oh I guess they're mudang? Ok"
I Always envision an introduction of her brother on a balcony or rooftop etc, half in half out. Looking out to the open, (open sky) but still stuck in the building. U kno for the symbolism
Context/ plot list/ vibes under the cut
For context: Huntr/X is invited to a fancy elite party or w/e but it's not the glitz and glam kind it's the %1 of the %1 kind of thing.
And they're invited when other entertainment people aren't is bc their economic impact when they tour/ release new stuff is comparable to like a small country's gdp or smth. But zoey can't go bc she's scheduled to appear on like idk physical 100 and she's not missing that for anything. And Mira has some fashion thing idk on but also is like ugh, you couldn't get me to go to on of those things if u paid me.Rumi who after the whole demon reveal thing (weight off her shoulders) is like fuck it I'll go by myself idc I look hot it could be fun.
Mira: "you haven't been to many of those things have you"
And she goes and it's yea bougie af but she can't help but feel like everyone there is looking at her like wolves do a lamb. And this senator dick won't leave her alone (idk doesn't have to be creepy but I feel we've all met people who talk at you foreverrrrrr) so she's having face but ready to tell him to fuck off.
Then some man comes up, politely interrupts and says that the senator is needed elsewhere. And the senator, who was talking a big game, doesn't protest and immediately leaves with the stranger. Rumi didn't get a good look at the man but as they leave he glances back at her, not a wink or a nod but enough to acknowledge, like "gotchu girl"
And later she sees him by himself outside, and as they talk she has this uncanny feeling like she knows him. She can't put her finger on it but she feels comfortable w him, and there's something more to him than he's letting on. He also seems cagey and evasive, but not disingenuous. But then he mentions the "demon type", which sets alarm bells off like does he know? How? Is he just referring to the lyrics from takedown? That seems way too specific tho that would be weird for him to do that.
Then they're interrupted before she gets any answers, but before she goes back inside she pauses. He's like "it was a pleasure". But she has this weird feeling abt him and the demon reference makes her even more suspicious, so she grabs his hand to see if patterns light up. They don't (not a DEMON woo)He's like "tf are you doing"She bails after that it's a bit embarrassing.
Later she's telling zoey abt the guy (damn she can't remember his name) and she's describing him/ his vibes like she's sure they've seen him before. Zoeys like "I mean I can't think of any GUYS like who you're describing". Not mentioning she's pretty much described Mira exactly.
This isn't anything related to anything else storywise, just riffing off my fav hc that despite mira being the "black sheep" and not getting on w her family they are actually a lot alike (like that other post I made w the gala penthouse thing)
Key differences tho are:She's driven by love where as her father is driven by existential insecurity and fear.
Her mother (although v smart) is v selfish/ emotionally immature where she is the opposite.
Mira knows who she is (secure in her identity) but her brother doesn't know himself anymore (a consequence of trying to win the love of their parents.
Like they both have the same core wound (not seen/loved by their parents - in the right way anyway) but they have vastly different responses to it.Ie Mira becomes so bold and audacious and successful that they are forced to see/ recognise her. Whereas her brother distorts himself in an attempt to match what he understands them to want.
Neither approach is successful, not the kids fault tho it's the parents.
Something so funny to have a character who is the visual of a famous kpop group with a core wound of wanting "to be seen" ie recognised and loved by her family for who she is. Also her name literallymeans look in spanish lol
Tho I will say any story abt her family to me isn't rich parents = bad and mean, it's more about how tragedies of the past ripple through generations and how, try as we might, we can never be completely separated from family bc it's literally in our blood.
I will say that I think it would be funny if at first the brother seems to be another example of the chaebol son trope. Only for that to not be the case ie he looks/seems the part so people assume it's the case ie seems aloof and laconic but is actually disassociating so hard and doesn't speak a lot bc his parents were like omg dude shut tf up when he was younger rip self esteem). And wears the suits that people might associate w that east Asian Mafia aesthetic but he's like damn I can't wear t shirts to these meetings tf do u what me to do. He can't help that he has resting bitch face an high cheekbones.
I like to think that unlike her parents, she misses her brother deeply, and he does as well. And they both love each other deep down but both think that the other resents them. And it's easier to hate than to love. But love is persistent. And so they keep memories of one another (maybe her brother is a huuuge kurosawa fan, and used get mira to watch his favourite movies with him. And so she loves to watch those movies with rumi and zoey. Bitter-sweet. And maybe mira would put on performances as a little kid dancing to her favourite songs. And her parents were always too busy. But her brother would sit and watch and applaud. And now he has a playlist of all of those songs. That he listens to when he's sad/lonely. Which is often these days. Bitter-sweet). Also so much time has passed since they last saw each other that it would take Mira like 8 seconds to recognise him now
Anyway I love the intro scene in silence of the lambs where you expect lecter to be a monster but when he's first on-screen he's v clean and presentable, and then later he bites someone's face of like the juxtaposition is tastyyyy. So this is my little version of that w rumi assuming that her brother would be a dick, bc Mira doesn't get on w her family and she's cool so he must not be, then when she realises who he is she's taken aback bc he's actually a lot like mira. But also like mira and herself amd zoey (kpop stars who moonlight as demon hunters) there's a lot more to him than just appearances
i fucking hate the “this is the good luck post.” Girl stop contributing to a superstitious environment with ur anecdotes there’s a million goddamn notes on it it’s statistically reasonable that a bunch of people remember the good things that happen after they reblog it
A man is driving down the road and breaks down near a monastery. He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, “My car broke down. Do you think I could stay the night?”
The monks graciously accept him, feed him dinner, even fix his car. As the man tries to fall asleep, he hears a strange sound.
The next morning, he asks the monks what the sound was, but they say, “We can’t tell you. You’re not a monk.”
The man is disappointed but thanks them anyway and goes about his merry way.
Some years later, the same man breaks down in front of the same monastery.
The monks accept him, feed him, even fix his car. That night, he hears the same strange noise that he had heard years earlier.
The next morning, he asks what it is, but the monks reply, “We can’t tell you. You’re not a monk.”
The man says, “All right, all right. I’m *dying* to know. If the only way I can find out what that sound was is to become a monk, how do I become a monk?”
The monks reply, “You must travel the earth and tell us how many blades of grass there are and the exact number of sand pebbles. When you find these numbers, you will become a monk.”
The man sets about his task. Forty-five years later, he returns and knocks on the door of the monastery. He says, “I have traveled the earth and have found what you have asked for. There are 145,236,284,232 blades of grass and 231,281,219,999,129,382 sand pebbles on the earth.”
The monks reply, “Congratulations. You are now a monk. We shall now show you the way to the sound.”
The monks lead the man to a wooden door, where the head monk says, “The sound is right behind that door.”
The man reaches for the knob, but the door is locked. He says, “Real funny. May I have the key?”
The monks give him the key, and he opens the door.
Behind the wooden door is another door made of stone.
The man demands the key to the stone door.
The monks give him the key, and he opens it, only to find a door made of ruby.
He demands another key from the monks, who provide it.
Behind that door is another door, this one made of sapphire.
So it went until the man had gone through doors of emerald, silver, topaz, and amethyst.
Finally, the monks say, “This is the last key to the last door.”
The man is relieved to no end.
He unlocks the door, turns the knob, and behind that door he is amazed to find the source of that strange sound.
But I can’t tell you what it is because you’re not a monk
the way i learned this, it was always told through spoken word. And you’d do the door thing for ages. AGES. literally just making up any old material. ‘behind the foam door is a door made of spinach’ that kind of shit. Go on until whoever is listening has already begged you to stop and has now gone on to pleading, clutching your shirt on their knees pleading. And when you finally said the last line? People went fucking nuts Like there was a good chance of just getting the teeth knocked out of you after telling that joke.
A friend of mine did that shit for 30 minutes on a camp once. The entire fucking bus just exploded in anger when she finished. It was a fucking massacre.
We're at the "JK Rowling is personally funding litigation to try and destroy AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL" stage of rabid UK terf brain.
Screenshot via Alejandra Caraballo @esqueer.net on bluesky
Tldr Amnesty International, global human rights organisation, published a report called 'A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK'. In it is detailed, amongst others, a whole bunch of transphobic groups and organisations, including Beira's Place, JK Rowling's trans exclusionary sexual violence support service. JK Rowling threw a shit fit and got Amnesty to take the report down by threatening libel. This was obviously not enough, because you can't appease a fascist, so now she's going to bankroll a bunch of lawsuits anyway through the JK Rowling Women's Fund.*
You can read an archived version of the report here, please save it and share it.
*Not so friendly reminder there is no way to engage in the wizard books without enabling this shit.
The above is explaining three semantically similar statements with different connotations, in decreasing order of prevalence. In the early twenty-first century, native English speakers would understand the connotations implicitly, and would not need the detailed explanation of the above, which draws from the pattern.
In all cases, these statements serve as the prologue to some correction for a mistaken assumption, as explained above.
In the first case, the word "easy" is used to emphasize that the mistake is common, natural, and understandable, and that there is no shame for being mistaken on the given matter of topic. This is a very common turn of phrase.
In the second case, the word "tempting" is used to emphasize that the mistake is born out of some desirable motive. The biases that caused one to form the mistaken assumption as potentially sympathetic to the corrector. This is an less common, but known, turn of phrase, implying a harsher critique.
In the third case, the word "comforting" is used to emphasize that that the only reason someone is making an assumption is because they are coddling their own biases, even though any attempt at thinking things through would prove it irrational. It is the equivalent of accusing someone of sticking their head in the sand, like an allegorical ostrich. "Read for filth" is an idiomatic expression meaning to offer full, unfiltered criticism of something, ripping it apart. This is even less common to use, but the point would be understood as being a prelude to the harshest criticism of the three.
okay, for those interested, here is a full timeline of how we got to Count Binface:
1977: Star Wars is released, featuring, of course, Darth Vader
(Pictured: Darth Vader)
1984: Director Todd Durham releases his Star Wars parody movie, Hyperspace, featuring Darth Vader inspired villain Lord Buckethead.
(Pictured: Hyperspace poster featuring two Jawa-esque aliens flying through space in a shopping trolley.)
1987: Hyperspace is released on video in the UK, under the new title Gremloids.
(Pictured: Gremloids cover in the style of the original Star Wars poster, featuring Lord Buckethead.)
To promote the film, Mike Lee, the owner of the distributing company, ran for parliament as Lord Buckethead. He ran in Margaret Thatcher's constituency, Finchley, in order to get on TV. Lord Buckethead was representing the Gremloids party.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead on TV with Margaret Thatcher.)
1992: Gremloids is re-released. Lord Buckethead rides again, this time against prime minister John Major in Huntingdon. (Here's a fun fact about Huntingdon: I was born there! :D) 87/92 Buckethead seems to have leaned pretty hard into the space supervillain thing, with campaign promises including 'demolish Birmingham to build a spaceport'.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead on TV with John Major. Other notable candidates include Screaming Lord Sutch of the Monster Raving Loony Party.)
2017: comedian Jon Harvey, having recently watched Gremloids and learned of Lord Buckethead's candidacy for parliament, decides it's a great bit. He runs against Theresa May in Maidenhead. 2017 Buckethead seems to have a wackier and also more political approach, with campaign promises ranging from nonsense like 'nationalise Adele' to gesturing at actually sensible policies with stuff like 'lower the voting age to 16 and restrict voting after age 80'.
He also made an appearance on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. As with his previous incarnation, he was a member of the Gremloids party.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead dabbing on stage with Theresa May.)
2018: Director Todd Durham asserts his legal ownership of Lord Buckethead. Jon Harvey opted not to go to court over Buckethead and handed over the reins. Todd Durham extended an invitation to anyone who wanted to be the 'authorised' Lord Buckethead.
(Pictured: the new Lord Buckethead.)
2019: Lord Buckethead, now played by journalist David Hughes, stood against Boris Johnson in Uxbridge and South Ruislip. He ran for the Monster Raving Loony Party, the UK's pre-existing gag candidate party. He ran with a similarly silly manifesto as the 2017 incarnation, but with a bit less of a political edge. His promises included 'All doorways to be increased by 1 foot (30 cm) in height' and 'Nigel Farage to be sold for parts'.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead and Count Binface square up.)
Meanwhile, Jon Harvey in his new persona Count Binface, also ran against Boris Johnson. Buckethead and Binface face off! Binface ran as an independent with a manifesto once again blending silly and semi-serious promises such as 'nationalising model railways' and 'giving £1 trillion a week to the NHS'. This was also I believe the debut of his promise to 'move the hand dryer in the men's toilet at Uxbridge's Crown and Treaty pub to a more sensible position'.
(Pictured: Count Binface presenting the offending hand dryer, inconveniently close to both the sink and the urinals.)
He has a point.
2021: Count Binface runs for the position of Mayor of London for the first time, with promises such as 'London to join the European Union'. He notably finished ahead of far right party UKIP.
2023: Count Binface runs in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election following Boris Johnson's resignation. He once again gets more votes than UKIP.
May 2024: Count Binface once again runs to be Mayor of London, debuting his now iconic 'build at least one affordable house' promise. Notably, he finished ahead of far right party Britain First.
(Pictured: Count Binface with Rishi Sunak. Also pictured: Monster Raving Loony Party candidate Sir Archibald Stanton with a ventriloquist's dummy.)
July 2024: Count Binface stands in the general election, running in Richmond and Northallerton against prime minister Rishi Sunak. He debuts his promise to cap the price of 99p flakes at 99p. This is his most successful election to date with 308 votes.
(Pictured: Count Binface with Andy Burnham. Also pictured: independent candidate Robert Pownell, dressed as a fox for his own reasons.)
June 2026: Count Binface stands in the Makerfield by-election against Andy Burnham, (recently) former Mayor of Manchester running for parliament with the intention of standing in the Labour Party leadership contest.
(Pictured: Count Binface on BBC's Newsnight.)
July 2026 (this week): Count Binface announces his intention to run against Nigel Farage in the upcoming Clacton by-election. He is briefly the only other candidate in the race and by the time other candidates announce themselves the narrative of 'Nigel Farage vs Count Binface' has already bedded in. And then it was now, and then I don't know what happened.
Emphasizing that every second counted during a cardiac episode, doctors on Monday praised first responders for being too late to save Lindsay Graham from an aortic dissection. “Paramedics had a very short window to save Sen. Graham, and thankfully they did not make it in time,” said George Washington University Hospital cardiologist Dr. Eric Fallstaff, who suggested that EMTs should receive special commendations for arriving at the four-term Republican senator’s house long after they could have successfully delivered life-saving care.
Thank-you to all of my new Internet stranger friends for being so gracious about having my post shoved onto your dashboards. I loved reading all of your kind tags and comments! Both Martin and Bosco have been gone for several years now but for 24 hours, they felt very present in my life. I greatly appreciate this gift. ❤️
Thank you to everyone who commented in their tags or messaged me. Indeed, today is “Martin and Bosco Day”. I originally whimsically blazed this photo on 13 July 2022. I never expected Martin and Bosco to travel so far and make so many new friends. The experience has been such a gift for me.
