from the last chapter mentioning him (ie: “Bookman doesn’t have a successor anymore”) there’s honestly multiple takes on it.
The most optimistic one would be that, Bookman being dying atm, the name had been passed down and Lavi officially became Bookman, so there’s no “successor” since now he’s an official bookman.… but I don’t believe in that theory much :)
to me, Lavi’s dilema was always about his duty as a bookman and his duty as an exoricst. As it is, I always pictured that at some point, both persona that he manages to ballance so far, is going to force him to make a choice. So I’m still a bit conflicted about what this “no longer successor means”
At “best”, it could mean that Lavi is still with the Noah while Bookman escaped. So the Campbells (?) could believe that Lavi didn’t make it out (since Bookman barely woke up), while Lavi is probably still in the hands of the Noah being tortured. It could also be because Bookman thinks he’s dead, or, worse even, than Lavi is “better off to be thought as dead”.
I’ve seen a theory that is plausible, but idk how much I like it, if Lavi has his memory that started to degrade because of the parasites, in which case he would have lost his abilities to remain a Bookman and therefore, cannot be considered as one. it’s possible, I’m just not too sure about it.
As it is, I think it’s a matter of perspective, that we have the words of the Campbells, not even of Bookman, who seems to relay what Bookman was saying. So it’s. Either that Lavi is no longer able to be a Bookman, can be considered as dead, or that he was left behind and is still captive. Or, best case scenario, that the Bookman name is officially passed down so Lavi isn’t a successor anymore.
imo I’d say he’s still captive. Now, why, how did Bookman escape but not Lavi, is another question. And even more, how did Bookman end up in the Campbell’s house. And I have no proper theory about that ;; Maybe the bookman bloodline is linked to the Campbell, maybe that’s why they were on Nea’s side in the past. (hell, that’s why we have the “Past!Allen was the Previous Bookman Successor”’s theory). But how did Bookman escape? if he escaped, why did he leave Lavi behind? If the Noah freed him, why did they do that? Why would they keep Lavi, aside for blackmailing?
I don’t think Lavi is dead, I mean, there’s no way he is dead. Hoshino has been hyped to write his arcs for so long, hell, originally she wanted to write a manga called Bookman about Lavi, so there’s no way he got this kind of send off. But we know Lavi’s fate is going to be sad.
As a believer that he’ll need to make a choice between his duty as Bookman and duty as Exorcist (and that even without the Heart theory, although it adds even more to it, but even without this theory this dilema is super interesting), I don’t especially like the “he lost his abilities to memorize stuff” theory, because it forces him out of his Bookman’s duty and I think he should keep a matter of choice in this dilema.
So I think he might still be under the Noah, and still be tortured. Maybe he is even suffering a serious trauma from it, maybe he’s getting mental consequences (not especially memory loss, but some stuff like hallucinations or lack of focus that could be more damaging for him as a person than for him as a Bookman). I’m pretty sure that, once we’ll see Lavi again, he’ll be suffering a hell lot of the trauma from the torture for months now. (especially if he gets to meet Allen soon again considering Allen is kinda being taken over by Nea at this point, and that I’m not sure Lavi will have a nice reaction to Noahs after what he’s been through.)
But to which extend, especially an extend linked to the “Bookman no longer have a successor” thing, I have no idea.
We ;; need to see Lavi again for more infos. For now, there’s just theories. His arc will start next so…. Let’s hope we’ll get some answers by then!
