dcst artists!! help a fic writer out? i'm writing a postcanon fic and in it there's a mechanism where the reader can 'choose' cards to read about that character! i want them to look kinda like this twitter post, except the official ones don't have all the characters i want :(

here's where you come in (if you want): help me draw some of these cards for my fic because i am 1) lazy 2) not artistic and 3)busy. you WILL be credited, but unfortunately i haven't got any money or anything for compensation other than my utmost thanks and as much clout as i can give you. it'll be on ao3 and i'll be sure to notify everyone when it gets published !!

how to help: choose at most 4-5 of the following characters to draw cards for, check out which characters are still available (not crossed out), and please do DM me if you decide to participate!

you can send the drawings by posting and tagging me or dms, however you'd like :D

note: the cards don't actually have to be as detailed as the twitter post. as long as it's thoughtful it could literally be a stick figure idrc bakhdfbdasdkb try to keep dimensions similar to like a card, or like the twitter post + the fic has a melancholic ish vibe if that helps with the creative juices? so women are supposed to grin and bear the books, the comics, the movies, the plays, the tv shows, the stories, the sci-fi, the translated ancient poems, the fucking millennia of men writing about their self inserts torturing women and it being declared as High Art by other men, we’re supposed to read it in our free time, study it in classrooms, include their styles in our own writing, accept their cultural influence as natural, watch it in the cinema, write about it, talk about it, accept it, aspire it, but men can’t tolerate three seconds of female wish fulfilment of a woman snapping the wrist of a creep without feeling personally kicked in the balls.

This reminds me of something I observed in college while I was doing my honors thesis on women in modern horror films. I watched a LOT of horror during that time as part of my research, and sometimes that was done with my family around.

And my dad and brothers? Were deeply disturbed by the movie Jennifer’s Body. I was flabbergasted. It’s not scary! It’s not even that gory. But they were horrified by it. These men who grew up on 70s slashers were legitimately shook by 90 minutes of Megan Fox eating a few teenage boys, mostly off-screen.

Similarly, my all-male reading panel for my thesis? Were so disturbed by my synopsis of the film Teeth that they couldn’t even talk about it. One of them said he couldn’t look at his wife for a week after reading it.

Again, grown-ass men who study and teach media for a living. Who definitely watch and enjoy horror movies. One of whom was a huge Tarantino buff. We watched and read worse in his intro to mass media class! But one movie about a girl whose vag could bite was enough to haunt him.

Then of course you have things like the Gone Girl backlash–men yelling that Amy Dunne is evil and women clamoring to assure everyone that they know she is not someone to emulate–the backlash against Carol Danvers, and, more recently, the griping from MRAs against the upcoming film Hustlers, which is about strippers scamming their Wall Street clients.

My conclusion? Most men–at least most straight, cisgender men, who are both my sample population and most of the ones whining that Carol is a “villain”–are perfectly fine with, and desensitized to, media where men do violence to women (horror movies), or men do violence to men (horror and action movies). They’re even sort of fine when women do violence to women (“ooooo cat fight!”).

But they get intensely uncomfortable when women are depicted doing any kind of violence to men, especially in films that tilt the balance of power to the other side of the m/f gender binary beyond a single moment or scene.

So woman as flesh-eating monster with men as her preferred cuisine? Woman who responds to unwanted sexual contact by biting it off? Woman who frames her cheating husband for murder? Woman whose response to harassment–behavior that many of the loudest whiners know is both creepy and reflective of their own thoughts/actions–is to break something?

Too scary. Unacceptable. Disturbing. These men hate being presented with the idea, even in fiction, that their position of power is socially constructed, that it could easily be flipped the other way. It terrifies them.

In feeling that terror, they experience a tiny modicum of what living, existing, moving, being perceived as a woman in the world is like.

And they flinch every time.

ronin is the monster, and you'll do well to remember that.

taking down ai slop of ronin means encountering horrific characterisations of my boy and it frustrated me enough to write this:

the point of ronin beaufort is he IS the monster. he is your thoughts whispering sick things in your head. kill, kill, kill this town, ther.

purity is a saccharine lie that will meet ruin. (ethereality estridge is a false idol to be broken down.)

he does not give a shit. he does not feel sorry for himself. when he says he revels in his devilry he means it. he's not some tragic, pathetic pathos, you all see me as a monster but estridge you dont look at me like that. you see me as a better man than i am.

can i repeat. he does not feel sorry for himself. there is no world where hes comforted by ther / mc / whatever character telling him he isn't monstrous and where ronin. fucking. beaufort thinks "oh yay [they] think im a good man and dont think im a monster". that specific dialog in killer chat! "i think the devils a better man than he says he is" drops so many favor points im not joking.

im sorry that is just a fundamental and gross misunderstanding of his character. he is ROT. ROT IS HIS SOLACE. ROT IS WHO HE IS. and i mean this in the most beautiful way. i mean this in that the grotesque has given him breath, has let him live. rot is everything he wants because the perfect, everything-hes-nots have ruined everything he holds dear. he cant accept anything but monstrousness, the devils fall from grace into autonomy and self-determination, so blatant and blazing in it.

so when a man is born out of a body of his rot why won't he revel in it?

"you're the nicest boy angelwood has to offer" ther tells him and ronin points to the fucking bloodsplatter and is like "yeah even with this?" and ther is like "especially." ronin fucking laughs because ther's perfect rot, he's absolute rot. he is happy in his monstrosity because his monstrosity is what. allows him to be.

he is the shoulder devil. im gonna drag you to the depths. youre gonna give into your worst impulses. im gonna make you into your wretched apotheosis and you'll thank me for it.

and ther estridge is no saint. ther styled his horns. when ronin asks them if they want it back:

"no of course not. i like them on you".

they love him for his devilry. of course they do. (because the perfect girl-not-a-girl needs the devil to make them fall.)

ronin is toxic and monstrous and that is the point. that is what makes him who he is. lets not sanitise my son please it makes me sad when i see it. and it makes me even sadder when i see people making him white and cis. just stop.

Making Ronin white and cis is definitely a problem, as is the AI stuff, but the rest of the stuff is just normal fanon mischaracterisation that you're just going to have to deal with when your characters become popular and gain a fandom.

Having headcanons or interpretations of your own character that don't align with your views of them is fine, and this post is super weird and antagonistic towards differing interpretations of your character.

It also just feels really edgy good grief.

I do really love this game, and Ronin and all the characters but like, I do think the response to the mischaracterisation is a bit harsh- and a bit sensitive.

i understand that my post can come off as harsh, though misinterpreting how ronin views his grotesqueness inherently changes who he is as a character.

ronin views his grotesqueness, his "rot" as beautiful. that rot (if i haven't made it clear in the original post) is his transness and his queerness, and his asian identity; not just his fight to be who he is, but his absolute revelry in his own self. no shame. only a reclamation of what others see as his shameful monstrous rot; only a reclamation of his "beautiful rot".

so, we can extrapolate from this and see what the wider issue is. if people want to make fics that see him in a different light (like, picking up on the ronin ai example i had in mind while making that post - whitewashed and cisgender yandere boy who thinks he's a irredeemable monster but wants mc to save him) then by all means. however, it's just not something i can ever endorse because the specific erasure of how he views his rot (his reclamation of his identity) erases how he views his identity (something so beautiful, never to be ashamed of) - as an asian trans guy - and inevitably, also erases his identity entirely. you know, the white and cis stuff we seem to always end up at. from this, we can see why an interpretation of ronin being ashamed of his grotesqueness (aka the transness he fought for) might be a problem.

i won't respond to your other comments but i did find "feels really edgy good grief" kinda funny... unfortunately, that's just how he is? both killer chat! and gluttony gods show that. mister edgelord is being an edgelord, go figure.

Adding onto the conversation about identity a little…

I can’t be the only one who wishes ronin’s Asian-ness was more… well… visible? It certainly isn’t as evident as his trans identity in dialogue, nor is it anywhere in his design (his trans and pride bracelets in kc and some kind of tape/binder in gg). I also understand he’s meant to be Asian American, but as an ABC, er I feel like there are aspects of my character that are undeniably Asian and I embrace those because yk proud of who I am and all that jazz— ronin doesn’t have that? At least nothing i or anyone I’ve talked to can really identify. He acts white, he talks like a white person (if ur an immigrant ykwim), his last name is white, he’s voiced by a white person (who ftr I think did a great job!). The only reason I know he’s Asian is because I read the wiki, and a lot of his Asianness like his canto name is accessible only through a paywall of patreon (which ftr I think is fine but just a little sad cuz the Crumbs of representation we get must be paid for)

I like how he’s written as unapologetically rotten and proud, but if he’s really proud of his whole identity including being Asian, why don’t we see more of it?

And I understand an argument could be made that he is the way he is Because of the town he was raised in— but preservation of culture/relearning it isn’t hard? Embracing it isn’t hard? If he’s truly descended into his rottenness and embraces everything Including his Asian identity, we should be able to see it imo

I love this character and these games, but wish representation was more visible? Idk 😭

to preface: i write dr stone fanfiction. im not trying to be snobby im trying to point things out

anyone else think that a sizable portion of the dr stone cast—ty my witch hat playlist for playing ‘done for’ from epic the musical—does anyone else think that a sizable portion of the dr stone cast genuinely wasnt there at the start

like i dont mean werent introduced i mean didnt exist initially until a new threat was needed (or until a new ally was needed)

the earliest example i can think of for threats is ukyo bc he really just comes out of nowhere and for allies i think the main one is probably soyuz tbh (although i think the nanamis generally were also pulled out of the ass, and i like the nanamis too!)

i do have a theory that the writer just straight up didnt know how to use a cast of characters and would just make up new ones when they ran out of ideas for the current cast. im reasonably sure its true but theres no way to know that unless its been admitted in an interview 🤷 cos the cast has just been growing almost definitionally exponentially and yet the storys problems with the cast have only continued to go up

i like dr stone btw. i am also someone who has been practicing writing for about five and a half years now. and the whole story sounds like a first draft

Yeah I think this is a fairly like common writing tactic? Maybe a little elementary, but there is definitely a pattern of just introducing characters when needed. In dr stones defense, it serves a motif or idea of “science and people and connection” or smth like that imo lol. But I do agree that to an extent the writers were like “um we don’t know how to do Medusa stuff… ah ok Joel!”
