I work with kids and sometimes we have to do safety lessons with them about like, not telling strangers on the internet your home address or something. And sometimes the kids wont understand why, so you have to impart upon them that, well, some adults want to hurt children. And thats kind of difficult to do, because you have to beat around the bush, both because you dont want to scare them (while still making them understand how serious it is) and because you might lose your job if you explain it too straight forward.
Luckily, for some reason, the villain of one of the most popular franchises with children for the last 10 years happens to be a serial child murderer. So when a kid asks why they shouldnt trust strangers, instead of hand wringing and humhawing my answer out, I can just say "we dont always know when a strange adult has good intentions with children, or when they are William Afton."
We need more women characters who are Male Protagonists. You know. Slightly haggard. She's splashing cold water on her face and gripping the edge of the sink staring in the mirror for a minute. She's coping badly with her deadwife
Ok listen I get that people tagging posts with men is a rule of physics on this hellsite but it's kind of bizarre how badly some of you have failed the assignment on this one. A generic male protagonist archetype who is a man is nothing. That's just the normal cliche I'm talking about subverting. What?
Like if you are For Serious headcanoning your blorbo as a trans woman I am kissing you on the head. But I KNOW most of you are not doing that. Come on. For one dollar name a fictional woman. No being a loser does not make him a woman try again

nasa employee: yeah, but why are you guys back so early?

nasa employee: what?
astronaut: *loading a pistol and getting back on the rocket-ship* moon’s stuck in a time loop.
*sticks head back out the door of the rocket-ship* by the way, if you go to the break-room in exactly 2 minutes and 45 seconds, you’ll catch the person who’s been stealing your lunches for the past two weeks.
nasa employee: what?! WHO IS IT?!
*alarm begins blaring*
nasa employee: *running for the break-room* FUCK!!!!
nasa employee: oh hey u guys are back early

astronaut: what do you know about project floyd?
nasa employee: I mean, the usual amount? i’m not really on the project anymore, why?

nasa employee: what? also, hey, where’d you get that duffel bag?

nasa employee: oh hey u guys are back earl-

astronaut: *grabbing two pistols, an extra box of ammo, a pair of scissors, some duct tape, a space harpoon, and a booklet of operating instructions that says “AIRLOCK MANUAL OVERRIDE INSTRUCTIONS,” shoving them into the bag, then cupping nasa employee’s cheek with free hand* moon’s stuck in a time loop.
nasa employee: the moon’s stuck in a what?!
astronaut: a time loop, sweetheart, but we don’t have much time ourselves, so you have to listen to me RIGHT now
nasa employee: *faintly* …“sweetheart”?!
astronaut: in 2 minutes and a few seconds, you need to go into the break-room and find frank.
nasa employee: wait, frank from IT?
astronaut: yes.
nasa employee: how do you know he’s gonna be in the break-room? i can’t just call him at his desk right now?
astronaut: how do i know this?! because, one, time loop, ok? and…also…because…heismaybetheguywhohasbeenstealingyourlunchfortwoweeks
nasa employee: that BASTARD i KNEW it
astronaut: BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT’S IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW. hey! listen to me! go in there, catch him red-handed with your burrito, and tell him lunch is on you FOREVER if he goes RIGHT NOW and checks the last security patch - because there’s a virus and the whole system’s compromised. then you need to get the hell out of this base, ok?
nasa employee: …ok. ok. and…and what about you?
astronaut: *cocking pistol and getting back into rocket-ship with duffel bag* me? i’m gonna shoot for the moon.
EPILOGUE:
nasa employee: so, how many loops in total?
astronaut: i mean, it was hard to keep track. somewhere around six months, if i had to guess.
nasa employee: damn.
astronaut: yeah.
nasa employee: and in those six MONTHS, the best zinger you came up with was “shoot for the moon”?
astronaut: hey, you know what, i had some other stuff on my mind!
nasa employee: i mean, i guess. it sounded like you found time to flirt with me each time.
astronaut: yeah, like i said. other stuff on my mind.
*they look at each other, blush, and look away*
astronaut: sooooooo. you’re sure your mom is cool with me coming over for dinner?
nasa employee: can’t make the day any weirder. plus, i owe you for ratting out frank, right?
astronaut: he did help us save the world; we can’t be too mad at him.
nasa employee: you’ve had a little while to get over it, i might need some more time. and it wasn’t even your food!
astronaut: ok, that’s fair. what if i buy you lunch to make up for it?
nasa employee: hmm, when?
astronaut: tomorrow?
nasa employee: well, i’ll have left overs from my mom, and you might too if you play your cards right. day after tomorrow?
astronaut: honestly, anytime is good for me.
I hate that there's no room for nonbinary people in media. When a character's gender is "ambiguous" (neither seen as masculine nor feminine) and solely referred to with neutral terms such as "they/them" and person, individual, etc, people can't stand that. They can't stand the idea that a nonbinary person wouldn't want to be a boy or girl, isn't a boy or a girl. They have to be a girlthing or a boything (why are all nonbinary people things? Why is it never girlenby or boyenby?), they have to be transfem or transmasc. When they're put into relationships, they have to be either lesbian or gay. Nobody can be cenelian or enbian or diamoric or gai or strayt or trixic or toric. That doesn't exist.
I'm sick of it. I'm sick of seeing nonbinarity be shoved into category after category after category when the whole point of being nonbinary is that we want to opt out.
It's not romantic. It's not platonic. It's "I would walk through the ends of the world for you and you would do the same, so who cares what everyone else thinks as long as I have you by my side."
The backlash was a major lawsuit from 9 tribes alongside other lawsuits from advocacy groups like NDN Collective. You can support NDN Collective by donating to them here.
Yesterday I was looking for good reference photos to use for practice at rendering darker skintones, and I noticed a lot of the same kind of racial bias photography pitfalls happening that made so many photos 'bad' photos to use as ref material, to the point that my friends helped me put together a guide on how to determine if a photo is a good photo to use as reference material when it comes to darker skintones.
I thought sharing it with you and your followers would be a good idea!
Example of a good vs bad photo reference (of the same model ie Khoudia Diop) below and why:
The good reference photo aka the left photo: balanced neutral lighting, good exposure, good range of values across her face, nothing is overly washed out or in shadow, the variance of undertones in her skin are visible, and the whites of her eyes and highlights of her face don't overtake the rest of her skin in prominence.
The bad reference photo: the white balance is shifted to focus on the details of her white outfit, and so her face and hair are underexposed. This flattens her face so that it appears as just a few muddied desaturated dark tones, while her teeth and highlights starkly pop out from the darkness. If you aren't zooming in to see the details, it all blends together in a disappointing flatness. This photo does this Black model a disservice, as the photographer and/or editor did not take the time and effort to re-balance the values so that her face would be exposed properly.
Photography, like every other facet of life, has problems of racial bias. Kodak didn't even start accommodating for rich darker skintones because Black families complained about how their photos developed; it was furniture and chocolate companies complaining that the color film couldn't properly capture the differences of their light brown and dark brown products that finally pushed Kodak to change their film color formulations to better depict the darker browns necessary to render dark skin. The history of photography and color film is quite interesting, just as the history of racial bias in the artform is depressing.
There's a short video from Vox that talks about the subject.
The full guide I put together can be found here if you wanna see and/or share it. I hope it is helpful.
Thank you for your time and I hope you have a pleasant day!
Khoudia!! I wanted one of her smiling that was still nice. Her teeth contrasting her skin is not necessarily a bad thing, that's not something she can help, and she should always smile! I love seeing her skin shade in the sun, it really is a beautiful dark. But for sure, every time they take pictures of her outside, they never do right by her skin tone. Oh, the modeling industry! Thanks for sharing your guide!
@modelsof-color do you have some pieces for Khoudia?
