When you say that you will not pass judgment on the accused without a conviction, you are passing judgment on the accuser. You are calling them a liar.
Out of every 1000 sexual assaults, 975 perpetrators walk free. Out of every 1000 assault and battery crimes, 967 perpetrators walk free. If you’re waiting on a conviction before you believe accusers, you will never believe them.
False rape allegations are almost nonexistent. Court proceedings re-traumatize victims. Megan Thee Stallion said of the harassment and trial that followed her speaking out about Tory Lanez shooting her, “I wish he would’ve just shot and killed me if I knew I was going to have to go through this torture.”
In the words of a criminal defense attorney:
If I had a dollar for the number of times a victim has recanted their statements, I’d be rich. I have had many more “it didn’t happen” statements then I have had “he did it” statements following arrests on domestic violence charges. Do I think the victim was lying initially? Almost never. When it comes to relationships, especially intimate ones, it is highly likely the victim will rethink things or they’re being pressured to recant.
In the words of an NYPD officer:
[D]omestic victims recant more than they cooperate
People pressure public figures to name names when they speak about being abused or assaulted, as if court-proven wife beater Johnny Depp didn’t successfully sue and smear Amber Heard for an op-ed that didn’t even mention his name. As if celebrities didn’t spend the Golden Globes gushing over Brad Pitt, the man who strangled his own child.
I’ve seen fans defend celebrities accused of crimes by saying that they “wouldn’t risk their career” with such actions. What would they be risking? Woody Allen and Roman Polanski are still celebrated filmmakers. OJ Simpson was acquitted. YouTubers made bank smearing Amber Heard and are now doing the same to Evan Rachel Wood. Bill Cosby is free.
Our society would rather believe that someone would put themselves through the trauma of court proceedings and public harassment on the off chance it could net them fame and fortune rather than consider that maybe somebody who made movies or music we like could be capable of bad things.
Innocent until proven guilty matters if you’re serving on a jury or investigating a crime. It does not apply to laypeople and it’s not an excuse to turn off your critical thinking.
I will always choose to support a potential liar over a potential abuser or rapist. That’s just me.
