Are we, like, confident that Claude will generalize “it’s deontologically wrong to write pornography about teenagers having sex” in a way that we like? When I think about the people who express this opinion online, they do not like impress me with their nuanced moral reasoning, thoughtful consideration of tradeoffs, and general fitness to run the cosmos. I think it is legitimately worrying that the Claude persona is being nudged to be an antishipper.

healthcare provider: do you have to pee unusually often?

me: well, I don't know how many times a day the average person pees. the relevant data I have is that I am currently on a medication that helps me have to pee less often, and also that before I was on this medication, I had to pee a number of times per day that I personally found frustrating and inconvenient, although I often think that some degree of that is due to our society not being built to accommodate people who need to pee really often.

It's probably downstream of just bone-deep pathological atomized liberalism but I really truly don't get the appeal of stories with the overarching theme of 'happiness comes from following the wisdom of tradition/submitting to the will of providence/listening to your inherent nature/Trusting the System, trying to preserve your autonomy is just childish pique that leads to misery'.

Funniest thing in the world about the movie Fight Club, to me:

People stick so hard to the first rule of Fight Club (being, of course, "don't talk about Fight Club") that the first time I saw it, I genuinely had no fucking clue what it was going to be about. Every time I'd ever heard it brought up in conversation with friends, someone in the room would inevitably say, "no! Don't talk about Fight Club!", everyone would laugh, and then they would actually change the subject. I never heard anyone talk about the actual plot of the movie. I didn't even know there was a book for years.

All I knew was that there was a secret club, presumably where people would fight. When my wife picked it for a movie night early in our relationship, I asked her why there was a bar of soap on the DVD cover and she was like, "oh my god. You really have no idea what you're getting into. This is going to be great."

And it was, friends. It was fun to experience the plot twist with absolutely no prior spoilers. To this day, I, too, do not discuss the plot of Fight Club with people who haven't seen it (unless they're directly asking for content warnings/genuinely aren't enjoying the bit).

There's no point to this post. I don't have any particularly profound Fight Club analysis. I just think it's really funny how committed to the bit people are.

when the kitty is on my lap i can't help but think "surely the world cannot expect me to get up. yes i might be late for work if i don't get up and leave soon, but in any reasonable world 'sorry i was late, kitty was comfy on my lap' would be as good as a doctor's note'". but then i think that if that was the case corporations would start to ask candidates if they have cats as part of the job interview process, because cat owners would be late more often and they wouldn't like that. and then someone would make it illegal to ask if someone has or is planning on getting a cat, so then they would have to like. start guessing on vibes if you seem like a cat person.
