So I follow N. D. Stevenson (comics writer and animator, most famous for Nimona and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) and his husband Lee Ostertag (also a comics writer and animator) on Instagram. When I started following them, they were both publicly presenting as women, and then a few years ago N. D. came out as transmasc nonbinary, and then earlier this year Lee also came out as transmasc. Anyway this is all setup to say that Lee had the chance to make the funniest post of all time and he took it:
Absolutely iconic.
I want to throw in that part of the context behind this meme was N.D. talking about how he sometimes gets hatemail for marrying a man as a former lesbian, and how many people seem to think he divorced his wife.
I have not managed to find anyone who thinks that in the wild, but it is so damn funny.
the king has abruptly fired 60% of his wizard staff, so he’s about to be abruptly surprised at who floated 100% of his formerly floating sky castle
I heard they're planning to maintain their levitation rites with autonomous constructs from now on, saying wizards are going to be totally obsolete within the season... so, ah, I'd invest in falling island insurance.
Preserving not-prev-but-someone-elses funny tags in this chain as well because I love both these additions actually,
[Image ID: Tumblr tags reading: #Ironically the castle has only stayed floating because Archmage Dave was holding all the institutional knowledge from the original team #and also maintaining the Levitation Widget which is crucial to maintaining the gyroscrope spells that stop the castle from flipping over #anyway Dave was axed because he wasn't 'innovating' #because instead he spent all day every day maintaining the Widget #hope His Majestoy enjoys sitting in his throne while his house does a barrel roll /End ID]
please stop harassing black people off this website. it's like stormfront for toddlers on here. it sucks, stop it
idk how "black people should feel welcome on this website" became something you have to say out loud. if black people aren't comfortable or safe on here then that is our failure. be anti-racist or die.
it's not enough to be passively non-racist. whether you're chasing people off here yourself or choosing to ignore "discourse" (meaning the rights of black people to basic respect), the end result is a big whites-only sign outside your little clubhouse. when the tide is pulling toward bigotry, refusing to swim against it just means you'll be carried along too. passivity is acceptance. get mad, get loud, don't value the comfort of the oppressor over the dignity of the oppressed.
steven is a really funny character actually. he never went to school. one of his powers is astral projection for no real reason. hes a musical prodigy. he was so traumatized by the end of the show they had to make an entire epilogue series about it. he spent seven years looking like a 3rd grader. he was even bisexual
he went to the center of the earth. he saved the world in flip flops. he broke his bones every day and didnt even notice. he killed someone
he didn’t have a bellybutton. he actively chose to eat super crispy bits of potato that got left in the deep fryer. he lived in a house but his dad lived in a car within walking distance of his house. he could revive people from the dead. all of his clothes were concert merchandise. he had an outdoor washing machine. he was put on trial for murder. he broke both federal and state child labor laws
The murder he was on trial for was different than the murder he committed
The murder he went on trial for was a murder his mom committed. The victim of the murder was also his mom.
he plead guilty
Uhhhh let me be queer
A late brunch for @montereybayaquarium and @mbari-blog's #deepseadecember!
Mola mola munchies! ❤️
Ocean sunfish, or mola mola, mostly eat jellies and other gelatinous organisms. Molas can indulge in this potentially painful diet thanks to a mucus-like lining in their digestive tracts that keeps them from getting stung.
So like genuine question is there any social media that isn't kind of evil or are we all just picking a poison and dealing with it.
I do think the trope of the tumblr-user-who-doesn't-like-rap-due-to-an-audio-processing-disorder is a bit of a red herring. Lots of people don't like rap or only like some styles of rap, it's fine. It's just one genre, it's not going to be for everyone. It's when you don't listen to rap... or any other music by black artists. There are lots of genres of predominantly and historically black music out there to enjoy. I can't really believe there's a person alive who would hate all of them, unless it's for a very specific reason. Disco? Cool Jazz? Bebop? R&B? Reggae? These are just the ones that were enormously mainstream-popular in the US!
You can't possibly persuade me that your audio processing disorder is somehow capable of precisely differentiating white 60s pop from Motown. And if it is, it should be studied in a lab.
I think this is actually why half the people on the "You have to listen to rap!" side choose rap as the One True Exemplar of Black Music. It's always the same playbook:
Equate "rap" with "black music"
Insist anyone that doesn't like rap hates black music
Insist this means they also hate black people
Aha, they're racist and I'm not! I win!
An argument designed from the start to paint as many people as racist as possible not to fight against racism, but to manufacture an excuse to hurl insults.
Yeah sure if someone listens to absolutely zero black music, to the point of actively avoiding it? Something bad is probably happening there.
But if someone listens to jazz or reggae or R&B but not rap? They probably just don't like the genre and insisting they're racist makes you look like an asshole who's more interested in looking for someone to shit on than actually working on equality.
I'd be inclined to be slightly more charitable to the argument, since I don't think it came quite from the place you say. But it's still a bad argument.
I think the original version of the argument was more like 'if you think rap is just crude, misogynistic, violent trash, you have a racist bias that needs examining, and actually listening to some rap music will disabuse you of that bias fast'. That's perfectly reasonable. If you're walking around with a reductive view of a genre rooted in your parents' racist stereotypes, you really ought to do the work necessary to stop having that reductive view. If you stubbornly refuse to do so, I might be justified in thinking ill of you.
But the thing is, nothing in that argument actually requires you, the listener, to end up liking what you hear. I think there's a reasonably good chance you will - I like a lot of rap, it's just that my preference is for older styles that aren't currently very popular on the radio - but even if you don't, you should have gained enough understanding by doing some listening to stop treating this art form like frivolous garbage.
Somewhere along the line that part of the argument got a bit twisted. People forget that it's totally possible to respect art you don't personally enjoy. I don't enjoy watching ballet, but I respect it. Everyone has their aesthetic preferences.
But yes, if your aesthetic preferences line up suspiciously well with a colour gradient, you might want to think a little about why that is the case. And try listening to some Stevie Wonder or something. Who could possibly not like Stevie Wonder?
More favourite useless wizard archetypes:
Wizard who knows exactly four spells, and who suffers from the world's worst case of "when all you have is a hammer" syndrome
Wizard whose magic has predictable side effects that it somehow never occurs to them to take into account until after the fact
Wizard who could have done that at any time, but nobody asked
Wizard whose "magic" is mostly legerdemain, except for one specific, completely unhinged miraculous feat they can do for real
Wizard who's never tried this before, but the theory is sound
Wizard whose powers kind of suck, but who insists they're the greatest in the land, and you can't prove otherwise because you don't know any other wizards
Wizard who wishes to make it clear that they advised against this and will not be held responsible for the consequences

it’s hella transmisogynistic & just disingenuous when people act like trans women have some sort of privilege by not being able to conceive children & act like infertility among women is a privilege under a natalist patriarchy.
trans women are a class of women & we are treated as such, we are compared to the cis standard of womanhood & not being able to meet these standards is a basis & justification of our oppression. under a natalist patriarchy we like all infertile women are oppressed for not meeting reproductive standards placed on women. natalist patriarchy views women as baby factories & thus infertile women are bad product, there’s no privilege in being viewed as bad product.
like ik these people don’t saying shit like: “you are privileged for being infertile” to infertile cis women because it’s extremely apparent that fertile women are treated beater in society at large than infertile ones.
why doesn't anyone use tumblr anymore, you ask me? well how could they? the site burned down years ago.
yes terrible fire. raged all through the night. by the time anyone saw the smoke the flames were so strong, not a soul could get close. whole town heard the screams. terrible business, just terrible.
what do you mean you logged in yesterday? son that's impossible. there's naught to be found at that URL but ash and ghosts.
some fandom disagreements are like "I see your point but I think this other aspect of the narrative is more significant," and some are like "I don't think you can read."
