Some thoughts I’ve had on intersectionality lately:

white queer people who are silent on Palestine and other similar issues/ignore such issues fall in line with white supremacy/fascism more than their queerness challenges it.

In their desire to maintain the comfort that remaining blissfully ignorant on these issues gives them, they put their whiteness before their queerness and become unsafe people for queer poc and poc in general.

A lot of white queer people that do this pinkwash their own identity, I.e they say they are progressive and inclusive but they remain silent on issues that do not directly affect them/issues that their whiteness protects/shields them from - such behaviour cannot truthfully be described as inclusive, these people are not inclusive and so, as said above, are unsafe people for poc

in all seriousness, if you're craving ice cream, it's likely that your body needs fat and carbs. If ice cream isn't an option for whatever reason, you can try to feed yourself something else with a significant amount of fat and/or carbs. You may also be dehydrated if you're craving sweets.

That said, sometimes your body and brain do genuinely just need a pick me up.

The more frequently you practice intuitive eating like this, the better you'll get at figuring out what it is that your body is asking for.

Also, a great trick is to take a look at what you're craving, note the nutritional contents (fat, carbs, protein, plant matter/fiber) and try and figure out what else sounds tasty for your particular craving. This can give you more data points to go off of. For instance, if you're craving ice cream, but a sweet roll sounds just as good, it's probably carbs your body is asking you for. That said, if you're craving ice cream and a sweet roll doesn't sound good at all BUT a bagel with strawberry cream cheese or avocado toast DOES sound good, you know it's fat you're needing.

If all you're craving is ice cream and nothing else sounds worth the effort, you may just need a low effort mood boost, which is also totally valid! This can also help you even if you can't have ice cream, because now that you know what your body actually wants, you know there are more ways to fulfill that order than the way it asked you to!

If you're craving sweets, you probably need protein. Your body is looking for a quick energy burst so it can acquire long-term energy resources.

If you're craving salty things, you probably need water and electrolytes. (If the pickles or olives taste sweet - you need more of them; your internal salt balance is out of whack. Happens a lot in summer when you sweat, especially if you're drinking water but not replacing nutrients.)

If you're craving carbs, your blood sugar may be low.

If you're craving chocolate, you may be depressed. It has serotonin & dopamine effects. (So do other things, but chocolate's the one you're likely to have direct experience with outside of other contexts, so your body remembers it as the feel-good candy.)

If you're craving fats, you may be short on vitamins - a lot of them are fat-soluble and present in fatty foods. And your body doesn't really have a way to tell you "I need vitamin E," so it falls back on "plz gimme sunflower seeds."

If you're craving a food that fits in more than one category, you'll have to figure out which one is relevant this time.

The Nazis had issues with their death squads having ptsd and suicides too. Mass execution by rifle was severely traumatizing even for hardline Nazis. They tried giving them copious drugs, alcohol, monetary incentives, but nothing worked and the execution squads kept having morale and suicide issues to the point that they were no longer meeting kill quotas by a large margin.

This lead higher channels to develop various gas systems as an alternative method of mass killing.

Revulsion to gore and carnage is basically innate, and says nothing about the morality of the person suffering from it.

There’s also an anecdote about Himmler throwing up after touring a liquidation camp and watching his first mass rifle execution, but I can’t find a solid source for that.

jabalia in northern gaza has been under siege for over a week. no food aid in. constant bombing. journalists being openly targeted. the bbc describes israel's plan to use medieval siege tactics to ethnically cleanse and settle the north of gaza as a "controversial plan" while acknowledging that not only does israel not allow people enough time to use the humanitarian corridor to evacuate, they also shoot at people evacuating and are still targeting the south. they have also made it clear that whoever leaves will not be returning.

i don't really understand how the news can describe the process of genocide in such stark terms and call it a "controversial plan" instead of what it is: a horrifying crime against humanity.

everyone (including kamala harris) has acknowledged that aid isn't going into gaza and aid trucks are at the lowest they've been since the genocide began (and of the aid that enters, NONE reaches jabalia camp, currently under siege).

israeli reservists have confirmed that the so-called general's plan is, in fact, being acted out.

the biden admin issued a "thirty day notice" for israel to start letting aid in—people in jabalia have had no drinking water for ten days already. like rafah, the humanitarian pier, and all of biden's other "red lines" this is political theatre. the people of jabalia are being exterminated and have been for over a week.

as a side note, which many have forgotten: this happened with al-shifa hospital and the surrounding area. when israeli forces retreated (which will not happen if the general's plan is carried out) they found mass graves at the site, with nearly 500 people buried (some buried and bulldozed while still alive) in the courtyard.

I cannot emphasize enough that you not only COULD, it was ENCOURAGED. Blank video tapes for recording whatever you wanted were available everywhere and it was hard to miss the record button on the machines. They also deliberately designed stuff like VHS players that you could tell when to start recording things - as a kid I'd tell the player to record the cartoon channel beginning at 6 or 7 and then sleep in and watch the tape later - and then they would tell you how to do it in the owner's manual, this was no secret. You were SUPPOSED TO record shows you wanted to keep or that you wouldn't be home for to watch later.

The essential piece of information missing here is that the people who made the VHS machines and the people who made the TV channels were, and I cannot stress this enough, different people.

Like, of course Disney didn't used to want you to record their stuff for free and watch it forever. When VHS home recording came out, the companies that invented it were...sued! Of course they were!

It's just that the TV companies lost the lawsuit. It was deemed that once the signal got to your house legally you could do whatever the hell you wanted with it as long as it was for personal noncommercial use. It would have probably gone differently if the TV companies had the ability to detect whether you were recording them and then shut the signal off.

Like, I am 100 percent on the side of "you should be able to keep and own stuff permanently, I just also think there's a limit to how much breathless mythmaking about the halcyon days of the early nineties I can handle before it starts drifting into low-key misinformation.

Friendly reminder to listen VERY VERY CRITICALLY if someone tries to convince you not to register for federal disaster assistance following a declared disaster. Helene is still moving north and I see the usual rants picking up steam already.

That person trying to win social commentary points online is not your friend. That person can’t give you funds for house repair or to restock on food and meds. And if they say they can - that is a scammer and not someone you can trust.

Scammers and developers trying to take advantage after a disaster intentionally spread rumors/misinformation to convince survivors not to apply for federal disaster assistance. Many well meaning people pick this misinformation up and spread it further without understanding how the assistance process works. It’s happened more and more over the years and it will happen with Helene.

If you do not apply for assistance, you lose the chance to receive federal funds. APPLY APPLY APPLY. This doesn’t guarantee you will meet eligibility requirements, but you definitely can’t meet them if you don’t apply. The application process isn’t perfect but it continues to be updated - and was updated in 2024!! - to try and make it easier for survivors. If you have damages or lost power for an extended time, APPLY.

You can check on FEMA.gov or with local news to see when disaster recovery centers will open, how long the application period will last, and what information you’ll need when applying.
