Years ago, when Tumblr was still owned by Yahoo, Yahoo wanted Tumblr to use their video player, rather than Tumblr’s own video player. This was partially to unify analytics, but mostly because Yahoo planned to put pre-roll ads on Tumblr videos. You know those unskippable Youtube ads? That’s what was going to happen to Tumblr videos.
The only reason it didn’t happen out is because Tumblr staff pushed back on the idea, saying it was absolutely idiotic and would anger users beyond their breaking point.
The next time you’re angry at staff for fucking up something a lil bit, or trying to make money in some optional way, keep this in mind.
In my experience, Tumblr staff cares more about their users than the staff of any other social media website. Most staff members are longtime users themselves and care deeply about the culture of this platform. I understand it’s become kind of a funny meme to get mad at and tear down tumblr staff, but I would warn against taking them for granted, we all know how much worse it can be. Absolutely call them out on terrible/harmful decisions when warranted, but know that they do care, and they are trying, and maybe it’s ok to appreciate that just a little bit, every once in a while.
Spicy take but "trans fems are disproportionately accused of being predators because of transmisogyny" and "Baeddelism as well as TIRFism continue to recruit trans fems while encouraging predation among their ranks because they believe only mascs can be abusive" can and should coexist. No identity is immune to bigotry. If we talk about predatory trans mascs (AS WE SHOULD. No predators should be let off on it.), then we need to do this all the way around for the entire community, because certain pockets of all branches of the community are oblivious and letting this shit go bc they think it "died years ago".

ive been off tumblr for a while bc ive been sad mode but have this
john green didn’t “deserve” the way that early ‘10s tumblr treated him technically, but I feel like the discussion around whether he “deserved” it or not is completely missing the point. he was an adult in a space that was largely recreationally used by teenagers. why would he not get the substitute teacher treatment. what else did you think would occur here.
This is not the hot take you think it is.
John Green in 2010 was 32; Tumblrs largest demographic of USA users is between 18 and 35. It has been since the sites inception and the only shift in that demographic has occured in the last 10 years as computers and tablets have become more common and accessible.
Tumblr was not and never has been a website for “children and teenagers” and frankly, I’m getting a little bit sick and tired of people rewriting their own history in favour of their* blatant sexual harrassment of an innocent man - or people they don’t particularly agree with.
It’s all “trans rights are human rights”, “love is love”, “black lives matter”, “disabled people deserve respect and self determination” - but all of that crowing is legless if you even refuse to acknowledge that a heterosexual white man was sexually harrassed and verbally abused off a platform where he should have been able to interact with people in relative safety!
Let’s be real - if John Green had been black and a woman at the time this was going on, Tumblr would be uwu'ing him left, right, and centre for being a brave, accessible voice for the general masses; but because despicable idiots who were incapable of nuance or even remotely understanding that their actions were despicable, unethical, and immoral EVEN when they’re directed to a heterosexual, white, man - everyone on this website (bar a small few) limp wristed, hand waved it off like “oh well, shit was fucked but who cares, amirite?”
Where’s your #MeToo energy for straight white men, people? Why must they be exempt from your compassion and respect? Or is it because all you see in them is their “privilege” and name it reason enough to lambast them for things beyond their control? No one can help what they’re born as - this goes for people born into privilege too, and yes, they need to be held accountable - perhaps more than most - but that does NOT give you wholesale licence to bully someone off a website just because they wrote novels about kids in love and doing their best.
Now, I’m not calling John Green perfect by any means, I’m sure he’s made mistakes and bad calls throughout his 40 years of life - and who hasn’t?? - but to remove him from your “x people deserve human rights” narrative as most Tumblr users are so happy to trumpet about, is to wilfully become someone of poor character and moral standing through refusing to acknowledge that just becauae someone has privilege, does not make them immune to abuse and harrassment. Nor does it mean who shouldn’t stand up for them and in fact, if you actually believed in your “x people deserve humans rights”, you should especially stand up for people even if they have the so-called privilege to “avoid the consequences of their actions by simply not signing up to a website where their target demographic for their novels tended to congregate”.
Sarcasm aside, what people on this website did to John Green just because he was “an adult in *checks smudged notes dubiously* childrens spaces, how scandelous”, was goddamn awful.
THANK YOU!! FINALLY, SOMEBODY WITH ACTUAL COMMON SENSE.
I’m so sick of the hypocrisy of “bullying is bad…unless someone is X, then bully them till they croak” on blogs that are supposed to be positivity and “safe”.
I wonder if it’s an age thing, because I’m 41 right now and a lot of this harassment seems to come from teenagers, though young adults have done it too. It happens in fandoms as well, it’s getting worse and it’s terrifying. The internet used to be an escape and now it’s becoming another bully pulpit for people.
As an antibullying activist, I’m appalled.
Don’t forget he’s disabled. He has severe OCD.
So it’s also “disabled people deserve rights” until you’re asked to actually show some basic decency to a disabled person.
There is no group that it is acceptable to dehumanize.
None.
Period.
There is no age at which it is acceptable or ~understandable~ for someone to bully and sexually harass another human being.
You’re sick little proto-fascist shits when you do it to substitute teachers too.
I think a lot about how, with trans people becoming more accepted and trans healthcare becoming more widely available, there are going to be a lot more detrans people in the future simply because the number of trans people is going to increase. And like, I really hope we figure out a better way to deal with detrans people within the LGBT community because the amount of assumptions people make about me and the shit that gets thrown at me for stating that I detransitioned?? Like, some people regretting their decision is always gonna be a part of the outcome when you’re able to make irreversible changes to your body??? We’re gonna have to deal with that in a constructive way, rather than just lashing out and saying you’d never detransition??? ‘Cause it fucking happens sometimes.
agree with all this AND want to add that the narrative in the online queer scene of "u can do anything for any reason with your gender and change your name as many times as you want" is actually very much in line with how detransition should be viewed which is that if you feel like transitioning for a period of time and then detransitioning or transitioning again then that's not weird or degenerate or destructive it's just what was best for you or your circumstances at the time and also isn't anyone's business. this is how i viewed detransition before i got involved in the internet discourse about it and know several elder queers irl who were "just a man for a while" or "just a woman for a while" and then decided later to do something else. and it's just not a big deal.
it's a little unhelpful that as a community we've absorbed the term 'detransition' from people who largely use it to imply transition is dangerous and a mistake. going back is also a process of transition. It's just Transition II (or 3 or 4 or however many times in your life you undergo a process). 'detransition' has a lot of false implications embedded in it, primarily the idea that transition can only ever be in one direction and that there is a static default to return to.
most damaging idea of the 21st century: the conviction of vast numbers of people that human history will end within our lifetimes
climate change represents world-altering tragedy if unchecked, but not even in the worst-case scenario does it mean “literally everyone dies”
yet so many people have jumped already to “it’s over, the world is going to end, we can do nothing about it” and are just paralyzingly cynical. How do I explain that the power to imagine a future is essential for creating it
you know the thing where trauma can cause you to just. not expect to live much longer so when you get to 30 you don’t know what to do because you thought you’d be dead by 25
That is happening to all of us right now on a society-wide scale
A lot of people are like. REALLY angry at me for suggesting that “be depressed and do nothing” isn’t necessarily the only response to climate change.
this, this, this, this, this, this, and like, 700 other sources will tell you that most of the effects of climate change will be reversible even if we pass the ‘threshold’ of a 1.5 degrees Celsius increase in global temperature
BUT. Even if the worst happens, it will be important to be doing things other than wallowing in misery???
I’m not trying to be callous but for people living today it’s wildly unlikely for the results to be “literally immediate death.”
People will get displaced from their homes by rising sea levels. We have like, years, probably decades, before that happens. It seems so fucked up to decide that we should do nothing, because we’ve already decided they’re going to die anyway????
If a bunch of us are going to die, why not die trying to help each other? Why not try to make sure fewer people die? Why not do something that might reduce someone’s suffering or give them food or clean water or a place to sleep?
I don’t know how to explain to you that people need socks during the apocalypse
Important.
You are so brave and an inspiration to us all!

Nothing brings me more joy than people learning from history and then modernizing it up a bit.
Like you wanna grow your hair long? Stop washing it so often and brush it more to keep it clean. Your hair will be way healthier too. And stop cutting it (and use a boar bristle brush, it’ll work better)*for straight hair!!!! Does not work on curly hair!!!
You want to keep cool in the summer? Out with the polyester and in with the linen, cotton, and wool. Natural fibers are going to keep you cooler because they’re literally made to breathe
You want to preemptively stop the underwire in your bra from poking through? There’s a very simple embroidery stitch you can do that the Edwardians used to do to stop their corset boning from coming through.
We don’t have to just learn from our ancestors mistakes, we can learn from their stakes too
[ID: Screenshot of a youtube comment by Terri Juanette which reads as follows - "When I learned (months and months ago) that shifts and camisoles were worn under the garments that had boning, I began wearing camisoles under my underwire bras. OMG, what a game changer! They no longer hurt!". The comment has 530 likes and 25 replies. End ID]
Terfs really dug up feminism from the 70's and think that they're revolutionary
They're not even coming up with anything new with it. Ideas are supposed to grow and evolve but here we are 50 years later with the same shit huh.
She's so close to understanding.
Wanna make a bet on it then? I could use the rent money.
If I'm wrong you're still ignorant and if I'm right you don't have rent money. So it's a lose-lose for you.
Also have you tried working for your money?
"Radical feminism is inherently anti capitalist" as I've been told.
I'm content with not knowing shit if that means I don't have to worry about being as strapped for cash. Speaking of which I can afford rent, do have a job, and worked two at one time this summer before starting full time college again. It would have been three at one time if one didn't fire me because I'm disabled.
You can call me ignorant all you want, but if you seriously think that not being able to afford shelter is something to be blamed on personal faults and not the society we live in, then you're definitely below me on the ignorance scale.
I was just trying to make a joke and usually that doesn't pull out more asshole but hey you jumped right in.
Nothing pro capitalist about calling you out for ebegging
I hate to tell you this, but "calling you out for ebegging" literally is pro capitalist.
"The aim of all this brutal legislation was to turn the dispossessed into a disciplined obedient class of wage workers who, for a pittance, would offer up their labour to the new capitalism. The state also clamped down on beggars, whose ranks were swollen by dispossessed peasants and ruined craftsmen. Able- bodied vagabonds were lashed or branded with red-hot irons, while persistent vagrants were liable to execution."
Seeing people who ask for financial help as less than has always been a part of capitalism.
If you're mad about it though you can always pet some sharks, they're really smooth.
You're literally the one asking for my money but go off.
“Mean girls all grow up to be nurses!”
“Mean girls all go into social work!”
“The mean girl to teacher pipeline!”
Y’all, these are just pink collar jobs. The reason you think there’s so many “mean girls” in these fields is because they’re all like 97% women. Of course some of them are gonna be assholes. There’s assholes everywhere.
We get it. Your job isn’t like other girls’ jobs. It’s a cool job.
it’s true that there are some incredibly cruel people in all of these professions.
it’s also true that they all suffer from chronic underpayment, overwork, lack of institutional support, and insane bureaucratic demands that would make them fail the people in their care all the time even if every single one was a saint.
That’s absolutely missing the point.
While those are all “helper” professions and they very much are pink collar (and are underpaid, that’s not an incompatible idea), they’re also ones that involve power over vulnerable people’s lives. (And I’ve only encountered it as a comparison to, say, male bullies becoming cops, it’s not like men aren’t being mentioned here.)
Secretaries/administrative assistants aren’t on that list for a reason. Flight attendants aren’t on that list. Housecleaners aren’t on that list. Receptionists. Customer service representatives. Dental hygienists. The people who style hair or do nails. That’s not a list of pink collar jobs. It’s specifically (pink collar) positions where if you want to abuse people you’re relatively likely to get away with it.
It can both be true that “nurses who care for disabled people need better pay” and “nurses who care for disabled people have a lot of opportunities to abuse their power and that’s something worth talking about.”
Women aren’t immune from treating people badly because they’re women, or because women are underpaid. They’re sure not immune from specifically seeking out jobs that will allow them to be cruel without any consequences to them, if they get personal satisfaction out of being cruel.
You are trying to shut down a conversation about abuse.
i know people use the word consent in weird ways but i want to say that i did absolutely did not consent to violating a complete stranger’s privacy today by having their private sexual fantasies catalogued in a “callout post”.
“here’s a collection of screenshots of a stranger’s intimate sexual fantasies on a clearly incredibly private blog with notes numbering less than 10 in each case. don’t these make you feel sick? don’t you feel uncomfortable looking at them?”
yes i do. but not for the reasons you want me to
“Thinking about these private fantasies of another person that nobody forced me to look at and that have 0 to do with me makes me uncomfortable, so I will now invest time and attention to tell everyone else about them, thereby making myself think about things that make me uncomfortable and doing my best to force this stuff on others. I am a reasonable person.”
So many “callout posts” are bullshit anyway, shit like “they follow a creator who likes another creator who drew cgl kink art once” is brought forth as “proof” somebody totally committed CSA at some point, “they’re x-phobic” is underlined with links, but instead of blatantly x-phobic posts on that person’s blog, the links lead to a post by a friend of the poster also saying the person in question is x-phobic without any proof, one link does lead to a post on the person’s blog but it isn’t even about x, and any actually bad things somebody has done, like idk doxxing someone, are buried under 2 pages of “ThEy ShiP tHe WrOnG sHiP and then they were mean to me after I harassed them told them why that ship is problematic and told me it’s none of my business what they ship :(”
