i know we talk a lot about kit not treating ty differently because of his autism but i want to also give julian blackthorn his flowers because that boy was standing on business about ty in tda. his conversation with diana in lady midnight is especially touching because not once he even implies that ty's differences are something that makes him bad. that seventeen year old boy understood his autistic brother better than any adult around him ever did.

the amount of times jules describes ty's mind as "beautiful" and calls him genius, and his anger that is directed mostly at the clave and their mishandling of anything that is deemed different.

and, of course, the way jules handled ty was not always perfect (especially as we get to qoaad) but that poor teenage boy was trying so fucking hard. and also there wasn't a day where he or his family thought that something about ty should change rather than then the system that might abuse him.

And you know what else? the fandom tends to minimize Kit's role in the necromancy spell too. He used his connections to the shadow market to help Ty get what he needed, he went along with the whole thing up until the very last moment. The fact is the necromancy spell was a two person job. But some people like to absolve both Kit and Ty of their wrongdoing and pretend like Livvy came back on her own.

I personally think that Kit and Ty both acted quite selfishly in this situation. Ty obviously in the way that he wanted Livvy back and was willing to do everything for her to come back to him. And Kit in the way that he went along with that to not lose Ty. These decisions and actions are deep down based on selfish motives (even if Kit tries to tell himself he goes along with it for Ty and Ty tells himself that Livvy wouldn’t want to be dead). And I therefore think, as you said, it is elemental to accept and address both of their faults in this.

I think the fandom infantilizes Ty so much. Some of his actions are objectively bad (the necromancy is a very big one) but some of you guys get angry with anyone, real or fictional, who call him out. the reactions to the conversation between Ty and Magnus at the end of qoaad were insane. the next character that calls him out to his face is gonna get dragged through the mud

It's neat that this scene demonstrates the ways in which, despite Tessa's relative youth, she's still experienced things that Magnus never has. Magnus is over 400 years old, so he thinks he understands how it works: you love someone, they die, you keep living. Tessa, on the other hand, is the one who knows what it's like to truly find your soulmate and to outlive them.

I think part of Tessa's different approach to love comes from the fact that she was welcomed into a found family while she was still a teenager. She met Will and Sophie and the rest as peers, even though she eventually watched them grow old in ways that she couldn't. Magnus, on the other hand, spent most of his youth with the Silent Brothers. He didn't start really interacting with mortal humans until he was already aware of his warlock nature, and so all of his relationships kind of left him as an outsider. Magnus was the mysterious stranger who blows into someone's life, or the powerful warlock they go to for help. He describes how even the people who lived with him until their deaths still saw him as something temporary, because they assumed that they must be temporary to him. This is why Alec is different, because he fully sees Magnus as an equal human partner. He welcomes Magnus into his friend group and into his family, because that's what you do with a boyfriend. For the first time, Magnus is being treated the same way Tessa was treated in 1878: as another messy person who needs friends.

It's just interesting to me how much the experience of being a warlock is shaped by how they're perceived. Tessa spent an entire mortal lifetime as part of a group of Shadowhunter friends. She was treated with unconditional love, and so she learned to give unconditional love in return. Because of this, she knows that the love she had for Will continues to live on long after his death. The love was part of her and part of the world, because they all accepted it without limitations. Magnus has never had that, and so he doesn't know how to approach a romance without thinking of the inevitable heartbreak. He's only ever been an immortal in love with a mortal, not a person in love with another person.

Somewhat connected to this; I always think about the effect the rest of the tmi gang had on Magnus’ relationship with Alec. Like I think it’s less “Alec lets him in”, and more “they all keep appearing & won’t leave so now you have to deal with it.” Like if Magnus didn’t get bullied into their found family over the course of tmi would Alec still be the exception? Would they even still be together?

Because it really was bullying 😭 he didn’t want them there at all & tried to deter them constantly (complaining, calling Simon every name under the sun except Simon etc) before relenting for Alec’s (or sometimes Clary’s) sake. When they break up, Izzy subsequent actions are definitely grounds for a restraining order. But also, the fact she organised a giant harassment campaign… kinda worked. Warlock friendships are typically held at a distance, none of Magnus’ friends were constantly checking up on him (especially for something as small as breaking up with his shadowhunter boyfriend of three months). Meanwhile Jace is at his apartment calling himself Magnus’ friend and calling him friendless among other things. But he also there, so Magnus does unwittingly get dragged into their group by the end and he just has to deal with it.

Maybe obvious but do we think this is actually a bit of a retcon in Jesse’s story or just Tatiana lying to Magnus and also probably herself, since she twists most of the narratives with the Shadowhunters because she sees them all as her personal enemies. Like she’s justifying it to herself and removing the blame because its entirely her fault he died in reality

More reason why I’m made to wonder if it’s a retcon is because Magnus sees a portrait of Jesse and does observe that he looks like someone who’s basically terminally ill and marked for death. He recognizes how weak and tired he looks. The portrait is painted knowing Jesse will die soon, very young, and is for the benefit of his living loved ones. Which just doesn’t seem right with how his death is talked about later. Because he may or may not have been in great health prior to his rune ceremony at 17–at best I guess that part is now just vague—but he seemed fine after getting the rune initially just to die terribly later in the night. He would have been totally fine—as far as we know—if he hadn’t gotten the rune.
