The more we find out about Olruggio and Qifrey's backstory the more absurd it is anyone allowed Olruggio to be his watchful eye and expected it to work. Like "would you tattle on your best friend?" is already a stretch. But it's not just that. It's-

"Hey Olruggio, you know Qifrey? The person whose life you saved when you first met? How you were his only friend in childhood? To the point that, when he disappeared, you were the only person Beldaruit could think to ask? (Which worked) How the two of you ran away together and exchanged hat tassels (but you both won't tell anyone the exact details of why and how)? So anyway we want you to live with him and be responsible for his students' well being. By which we mean narc on him to the cops. You'll definitely do that right? Cool."

So I was thinking about if Loki got banished to Midgard after The Battle of New York, he would somehow acquire a phone and end up knowing a shit ton of Gen Z things in like a week. But the main thing I thought about was Gordan Ramsay, like can you imagine Loki getting on his show because the Avengers want to kinda at least try to give him some good PR, and the episode comes out and it ends up being the most viewed episode. Cue like an hour of just them going at each other's throats, Ramsay being brought to tears, Loki threatening people who won't stop taking the seasoning he claimed, and Loki winning?? Like nobody knows how Loki 'would-be conquerer' Odinson ended up winning, least of all himself, and Ramsay complimenting his work. Memes were born, and the internet broke when Gordan Ramsay tweeted that he wanted Loki on the show again, not as a contestant but as a fucking judge.

I just had a sudden realization about this scene that I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone else point out. Think about this: Loki just finished shouting at the top of his lungs at Odin, but it isn’t until after he explicitly calls for the guards that they show up. I mean, the guards knew Loki and Odin were in the chamber, surely they heard Loki’s shouted monologue (if nothing else there is no way they could have missed his infamous ‘tell me’ moment). They knew Loki was verbally coming after Odin, and yet they didn’t step in until Loki explicitly asked them to. Generally guards are only supposed to enter when told to but wouldn’t such clearly angry shouting make the guards concerned? So, my question is why? Why wouldn’t they rush in to see if the king is alright? Is it simply commonplace for Loki and his father to get into huge shouting matches so they figure it’s nothing to be concerned about? Because if I was a guard and heard someone shouting at the king the way Loki is, I think I’d poke my head in just to make sure the king isn’t, I don’t know, being verbally attacked until he falls into the Odinsleep?

I have wondered about that before but assumed they were just very well trained. But you make a good point, we can infer from that that Odin used to argue with his sons often enough that it was not that unusual. We’re there guards near enough to hear Odin banish Thor?

But one thing I hadn’t really thought about is that they must have overheard a large part of the conversation. So did they hear enough to know that Loki was Laufey’s son? I had assumed that Ragnarok was when it became public knowledge across Asgard that Loki was Jotun, but possibly it was known amongst palace staff much earlier.

Maybe the guards did poke their heads in on the regular when they heard shouting in the beginning, but after like the sixth or seventh time Odin barked at them “This doesn’t concern you!” or “Get out!” they figured well, he’ll call us when he actually needs us. And then that just became part of Royal Household Protocol that the castellan imparted to all the new staffers and guards.

“It’s a very shouty household. You’ll get used to it. It sounds like he’s flaying his sons alive every night at dinner, but that’s pretty much just how they talk. The hammer might bang against the wall every once in a while, but if the wall stands, it’s okay. If you see light flashes, that’s the younger prince’s seidr. Again, if the wall doesn’t fall down, you don’t have to open the door. The only time you have to hop to is if one them yells the word ‘Guards!’ That’s a summons, and you’d better be there on the double if that happens. Beyond that, you’re part of the furniture. If you aren’t getting blood splashed on you, just look the other way.”

@thesaltofcarthage, Okay, that last little bit just fucking broke my heart! Ouch. Especially the “that’s just the way they talk”, cause damn, it’s probably true. I don’t see any of the house of Odin having a normal conversation. (Searches for a WIP to weasel this guard conversation in there…)

But yeah, I think that is an explanation.

I expect it was Thor and Odin most often; look at them in the beginning of Thor (2011). They’re the loudest and most hot-tempered members of the household. Either that, or it was tied with Loki and Odin and three-person battles. No wonder the guards are used to it. These three have so much verbal warfare over the course of Thor (2011) and TDW….

And that’s not even counting the ones with just Thor and Loki.

I don’t think Frigga was involved in many, except as the peacekeeper. That would be more or less her role as the enabler who loves her children but will not defend them from Odin.

I would say a lot of the three-person battles involved Thor and Odin ganging up on Loki. He’s the scapegoat, the one whose mistakes are wildly condemned while others’ of the same type are ignored. Considering Odin’s no-holds-barred style of verbal beat-down, and that Thor’s no slouch himself, it’s really no surprise that his self-esteem is as mangled as it is. No wonder Loki got really good at it himself. He’s had it done to him so many times….

Not to disagree with teh sentiment that this is a very shouty family (Odin and Thor, Loki seems to ususally get shushed)

Either that or Odin has to cast some sort of spell every single time he has a private conversation. If this was the case then perhaps it unravelled when he fell into the Odinsleep and Loki didn’t have to do anything to remove it before calling the guards.

But I’m just not sure I can believe the guards would hear all sorts of private or state secrets and not tell anyone else. But perhaps they do. Perhaps they have an incredibly strong loyalty to the throne and the royal family. I have to assume in this society that it’s an incredibly prestigious position for a soldier to have.

On the other point in this thread, my take on this is that there have always been underlying tensions in this family, but it’s only at this moment when so much is at stake and everything comes to a head that this boils over into the amount of shouting and angst we see in the film. Not that there was never drama in the family before, I’m sure there was, but I don’t think we can take the events in this film as representative of their typical day.
