if you have little girls in your life, make a point to prioritize them. listen to them. don’t interrupt them or let others interrupt them. make sure to compliment them on things besides their appearance. tell them how clever and creative and brave they are. it’s so important.

Teaching English to third graders, I used ‘she’ as the default.  The first day I did this, a few weeks into the semester, I noticed the girls noticing.  They sat up in their seats, they paid attention, you could see them going ‘wow’ internally.  

I continued over the course of the class to only use ‘she’ in example sentences. Towards the end of the semester, I assigned a piece of writing, and used ‘she’ in the example piece.  I announced that it was just the example, but the boys (who never listened to instructions) kept coming up to ask me privately if they could also use ‘he’ in the stories.   

The default matters.  People don’t feel comfortable to deviate from the stated norm, especially in a classroom setting where the teacher is the arbiter of ‘correct’.  The boys in my class felt they had to have permission to not use the standard ‘she’.  Imagine how girls feel all the time.
