Actually, I Am Still Mad About This
And Other Essays I Write In My Head
I get shit from people at work for wearing a pride mask with a power fist on it from time to time, weird looks, snickers, pointing and laughing, but once in a while I'll get meek little "I like your mask :)" comments from people passing by, nods and waves from others, I saw a kid with the nonbinary flag painted on their shoes shopping with their dad, a trans woman completely relaxed when she saw me, and two girls walked around holding hands, carefree. That I think. That is worth it. To let others know that they are safe.
friendly reminder that the satanic temple is an official recognized religion in america and therefore if you're a member you can't legally be denied an abortion, due to them believing in bodily autonomy & right to reproductive healthcare :)
Hell of a loophole lmao
not to be a hedonist but. pleasure IS the whole point, my loves. we are made for pleasure. humans have not survived out of spite or sheer grit or simply to make more humans. we live for pleasure. the pleasure of licking the last delicious crumbs off your fingers and feeling sunlight on your skin and massaging a loved one's shoulders. we're made to fill our bellies with delicious food, to nap in soft grass, to touch each other in joy and comfort.
there is no shame or guilt in our bodies doing what they were made to do. and we are made for pleasure.

Heres the thing you gotta understand about statistics.
“Increases your chances by 80%” does not mean “there is now an 80% chance”.
If your chances were previously 10%, your chances are now 18%, not 90%.
if your chances were roughly 1%, they’re now just slightly less than 2%.
thats how that works.
Wow I don’t understand math at all
‘if you have a baby after 35, the chance of deformities goes up by 100%’ is a line I hear alot.
It goes up from .5% to 1%
I think my brain just stopped working
100% is just another way of saying twice more likely. So 100% more basically means multiply the number you do have by 2.
Imagine how many woman are scared to have kids because of that statistic
This is why I took stats instead of calc. Because I don’t build engineer bridges in my everyday life but I sure do read studies that affect how I might live my life if I misinterpret them.
I’m terrible at numbers and math but I knew this and I really take it for granted. The average person definitely assumes, quite understandably, that “600% INCREASE!!!” must always mean a whole lot even if it literally only means that one of something is now six of something. Politicians probably take a shitload of advantage of this confusion.
just remember that increased BY and increased TO are very different things.
Oh god I didn’t even think about that whole other layer of confusion. Yeah if you’ve got 100 people and one of them is sick, that’s 1% of them who are sick, so if it “increased BY 100%” then that means now two people are sick. If it’s “increased TO 100%” then all 100 people are sick.
I was recently introduced to the concept of being a “receptive bilingual”, or “passive speaker”. Essentially, its a speaker of a language who has had enough exposure to have an advanced comprehension of it (reading/listening) but little to no active command of it (writing/speaking). I think its so fascinating! I wonder how many of us are receptive bilinguals?
Here’s the thing.
Sometimes you fuck up and make mistakes in friendships or any type of relationship. Sometimes, the other person can’t or won’t forgive you. And that’s their right. They’ve been hurt and have a right to decide that.
But this doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to forgive yourself. You are allowed to forgive yourself and try to move on from it. You’re allowed to let it go and aim to do better.
It’s okay to try and forgive yourself and progress beyond your mistakes. This is partly how we grow and do better.
Good for her.
The initial “punishment” for refusing media was a $15,000 fine.
She was completely okay with paying that, and said it was “worth it” to her, to pay the fine and just play tennis.
Only after that statement from her & her team did the Powers That Be decide the original stated “punishment” was not harsh enough (likely because she was a Black woman who wasn’t doing as she was told, because this ABSOLUTELY is about race) and tell her that she might not even be allowed to play at all.
And she still refused to be intimidated- to jump because they told her to.
I stand with her, but she shouldn’t have to do any of this.
And yes- notice how people on the right and racists will say “shut up and play” over and over... until someone (particularly a Black woman) literally says “I would very much like to shut up and just play”, and then it’s “we’re going to fine you if you don’t talk, and not even let you play”.
george floyd is not a martyr. he is not a hero. he didn't sacrifice his life. he was murdered. stop thanking him for bursting your bubble of ignorance. stop talking about his legacy as if he chose to die. stop ignoring that police violence continues to exist and continues to murder people.
remember that black lives matter. all over the world.
the idea that “technological advancement” should strive for the elimination of mentally ill, autistic or physically disabled people, instead of easier and better accommodations that allow us to live healthy and fulfilling lives, is ableist
I don’t understand what this post is saying…medicine should stop striving for cures because it’s discriminatory towards sufferers of mental and physical illness or disability?…um
Hi, sorry to butt in again but I’ve been working in disability for two and a half years as well as being disabled myself, so perhaps I can clear something up. There are two models of looking at disability. There’s the old model, the medical model, which sees disability as something inherent in the person - a person who uses a wheelchair is disabled because their limbs don’t function in the same way as other people’s, for example. Then there’s the new model, the social model, which sees disability as a symptom of society, so a person who uses a wheelchair is disabled because society does not fully cater for people in that position (think, for example, about how many buildings, transport systems etc. don’t have step free access).
You’re thinking about disability in terms of the medical model. The issue with this is that many disabled people don’t. For example, for many autistic people, their autism is an inherent part of who they are - it shapes their behaviour, mentality and personality to an extent that without it, they would lose all sense of their identity. Suggesting that they should be cured suggests that there is something inherently faulty about them - that who they are is bad and wrong and they need to be turned into a new person, instead of wider society being educated about autism and there being less pressure to behave and process information in a certain way.
Now, some disabled people do want a cure. I suffer from joint hypermobility syndrome, a chronic pain condition which makes everyday living very unpleasant a lot of the time, and I would love for that to be cured, but that is because only the medical model can apply to me. There is nothing that could be changed about society that could make my condition easier to live with, the only way my life could be improved is if my joints stopped hurting. Also, my condition doesn’t affect who I am other than hindering me due to the constant pain - without it, I would still be me, just more comfortable.
Please listen to disabled people. We all have different perspectives on and understandings of disability. When someone says that they don’t want to be cured (or that they do), please listen to them and try to understand why. It’s only a cure if it’s genuinely going to help the people it’s intended for, and the people it’s intended for know whether or not it will better than anybody else.
This is one of the very best breakdowns of the different models I’ve ever seen. Thank you! :)
