HEADS UP: The U.S. Postal Service quietly changed how postmarks work.
Mail is no longer automatically postmarked with the date you drop it off. Instead, the postmark now reflects the date it’s first processed by an automated sorting facility — which can be days later.
If you mail something right at a deadline, the official postmark could be later than your drop-off date and may be considered late.
If mailing date matters to you, go inside the post office and request a hand-stamped postmark.
A new USPS postmark rule may cause property tax payments to look late even when people mail them on time. The change can create surprise lat

everyone reblog this!!
despite the fact that jud's form and view of christianity is a very pleasant one, i appreciate that no part of benoit blanc is converted. it's not like i expected benoit to become a christian obviously, but i expected him to potentially stay for a service at the end, when invited. or to show appreciation for what jud is building at his church. even just appreciation that he's welcome.
after the whole movie, when benoit is given the invite, he still says there's nothing he wants less than to stay in that church. it's very, very reasonable and realistic of a traumatized atheist, but i almost never see it depicted in this way. usually they come around to "see the beauty" in one way or another. i just really appreciate that they didn't do that.
I think what stands out to me is the Road to Damascus scene. Benoit doesn't convert, because being religious does not automatically make you a good person. You don't need it, it's a community and system that should not be a requirement, it can help you grow and shape you, but it has it's negatives (which many queer religious people have dealt with, including me). Benoit does not convert, but he is positively influenced by Jud. Jud talks about Damascus, and Benoit ends the movie by ending the game. He "loses", so that Martha has the chance to truly confess and repent, in fact realizing that Grace was a victim.
Benoit did "see the beauty", but not in the church. He saw it in the hope, acceptance, and genuine kindness that Jud had in him. He was changed by the people, not the organization
So, the other day, when I was discussing AO3's policy on solicitation, a tumblr user came at me saying that AO3's "no monetization/solicitation" rules were "bullshit" because nexus mods allows fan created mods to get paid.
Look at me.
Look at me right now.

now this is a gender binary i can get behind
Very generous of them to describe it as the "Thinking Period"
They correctly excluded the outlier Electroshocks Georg
Okay if anyone wants to read this themselves it's called "Just think: The challenges of the disengaged mind" (Wilson et al., 2014). DM me if you don't have university access and I'll hook you up with a pdf.
To summarize:
The paper starts with an epigraph from Paradise Lost, so you know it's gonna slap
The main focus of the paper was mind-wandering. The main questions: is entering "default mode" (mentally detaching from your surroundings and ~traveling inward~) a choice? And, is it generally a pleasing experience?
(^Answers: no and no)
Most previous research involves a given task for participants to channel their focus, and mind-wandering was measured by deviation from said task. So the present researchers said "Ok but what if NO task?"
This paper reports on 11 studies. In most, participants had nothing to do. In others, they had the option to read a book, listen to music, or surf the web. The first studies were college students; other studies recruited other locals.
The electric shock wasn't introduced until study 10.
Before the "thinking period" they were exposed to pleasant and unpleasant stimuli, including the shock. So they knew what they were in for if they chose to receive the shock in the thinking period. There was no "What does this button do?" They chose pain.
"Sit here and think" and "receive shock" weren't their only options. They could also revisit the "pleasant" stimuli from part 1 of study 10.
The sentence that gets cut off in the above screenshot is: "Note that these results only include participants who had reported that they would pay to avoid being shocked again."
That's fucking priceless because in the first part of the study, participants were asked which pleasant/unpleasant stimuli they would pay to experience again or pay to avoid. These people reported that if they were given $5, they would use that money to not be shocked again. And then they chose to do it to themselves for free.
Important update (and very concerning in the case of electroshocks Georg)
...am i just fucking weird then for having literally zero problem with mind-wandering?
I mean, if i have a distraction like phone or reading material I'll choose that over nothing, but if I have nothing?
I have a whole universe in my head that I VERY frequently wander to in my daily life with whole ass characters and story lines and scenes that I try to refine over and over again like I'm planning a movie....
like sometimes I even enjoy having no distraction so I CAN just go live there for a while....
I thought more people were like that, but some people are actually so bored by nothing that they would choose PHYSICAL PAIN over that?? wtf
Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, CEO of Mozilla, announced that AI will be added to Firefox. Public outcry prompted Enzor-DeMeo, and then Jake Archibald
Additionally, here are some interesting comments from a Mozilla employee who's been working on these features:
No, you should definitely keep calling it a kill switch. It helps describe my feelings on the matter.
I would also accept ai throttle. Not because I want to use levels of activity between fully on and fully off, but because I want to throttle the ai with my bare hands.
okay this makes me feel a lot better

let me take a moment to talk about Ed's truly excellent bedside manner, thank you
This guy has clearly been in Stede's position more than once and knows exactly how to behave to be as reassuring and non-threatening as possible.
Ed starts out by being there; he's keeping vigil to make sure Stede isn't alone when he wakes up and doesn't take his eyes off him once (this is a - normal thing to do). He's doing this because he is already obsessed with intrigued by Stede and he's also determined to make a good first impression, yes. But he also just knows how important it is for someone to be there when Stede wakes up, someone who knows how to handle the situation.
Then he does. This.
There's this thing in nursing called initial touch: You place your open palm on someone's shoulder or upper arm when you greet them. The idea is that if someone is not fully conscious, it is often easier for them to recognize touch than words; the patient feels your hand and that makes it easier for them to focus on your words. It's also reassuring to be touched like this, solid, calm, just a single but broad point of contact. That's basically what Ed is doing here, even though he does it to Stede's hand. Look how he makes sure there's skin-on-skin contact. He's wearing the gloves but he makes a point of touching Stede with his fingers.
It's also just this, just placing his hand there, not a stroke or a shake; calm and straightforward, easy to process. Just long enough for Stede to wake up.
And it's only then - only when he knows Stede is awake and can hear him - that he speaks to him. I've never been delirious with fever but I have had general anesthesia, and I can tell you how incredibly important it is to have someone there when you come to, who tells you what the fuck just happened. You wake up incredibly confused, maybe (certainly, in Stede's case) in pain, there's unfamiliar sensations and you don't know what's going on. It is so reassuring to have someone there who puts things into context, just enough to jog your memory.
Ed does it beautifully. He speaks calmly but not quietly, clear and simple sentences, before Stede can wake up fully and become agitated. He just gives him the basic facts, and he looks him in the eyes while he speaks. And just like that Stede knows what's going on and where he is and why, and that there's someone there who he can trust.
And then we see why it is so important to establish that kind of trust and reassurance because Stede instantly worries about his crew, and is about to get up (bad idea) but Ed is able to calm him down immediately.
Look at this! He's only using the heel of his hand this time. I had to watch it multiple times purely for research to determine hat there was any actual contact happening at all, but there is; he's only giving the lightest of pushes, and he's using the part of his hand that's clothed.
He is giving Stede space. He doesn't want to crowd him or make him feel restrained. He's there to be a reassuring presence so Stede doesn't do anything dumb to hurt himself, and he's so respectful about it.
That's clearly a man who has previous experience with these kind of situations and knows exactly what he's doing.
I feel normal about this.
