a self-proclaimed terf reblogged my meme post about eelgrass a little while ago. i deleted my initial response because i realized i didn't want to give them any publicity, but i did want to take a moment to clearly state that i am a transgender woman and i love and support my fellow trans people of all sorts. if you're a terf (or radfem, gender-critical, etc.) who has found my blog, be aware that we are not going to find each other kindred spirits. even if you came to radical feminism with the genuine best of intentions, you're part of a movement that is doing tangible harm to some of the most vulnerable members of society, and i sincerely hope that you'll reconsider and change your ways. if you're here in a good-faith effort to expose yourself to other perspectives, i commend your decision and you're free to keep following me (though you may be better served following a blog that's specifically focused on outreach and education, which mine isn't), but the moment i see you acting with unkindness towards me or any of my fellow trans people, you will be shown the door. and if you're not here to listen with an open mind, please do us both a favor and move on. find another blog to read, or better yet, log off for a bit and go transplant some eelgrass. i think that would be a much better way to spend your time.

so i just found out that, as detailed in the post i just reblogged, matt mullenweg (the ceo of tumblr's parent company) has engaged in what was at the very least serious wage theft, and quite possibly human trafficking. i've been considering leaving this site for a while due to mullenweg's other terrible behavior, and i've decided this is the last straw. i'll probably leave my blog up, but i'll be logged out for good (unless mullenweg is removed from his position, in which case i might come back, but i don't expect that to happen any time soon).

i'll stick around here for a week or so to get contact info for some folks i'd like to keep in touch with, and then it's sayonara you weeaboo shits

okay i am pretty fucking triggered by it but today's "how is there more matt mullenweg shit happening", quite apart from the (comparatively minor) bullshit he himself has been up to today, is learning that he has allegedly trafficked at least one woman

because that's what this sounds like to me

i'm also a bit upset about the tone that the easiest website to find both complaints on takes, where it's all about matt's mother as a gotcha against him. like it's approaching things entirely sideways, in terms of the seriousness of what's alleged by each complaint. it's (unfortunately) par for the course for people caring for the elderly, especially once there's cognitive decline, to be exposed to bigotry. it's not acceptable for there to be money laundering and falsifying arbitration agreements as is implied in those complaints, and it's certainly not fucking acceptable to engage in human trafficking. so like. i don't actually care what this man says about how smart he is or how rude he is on twitter any more. justice for these two women, and may the truth come to light. jesus fucking christ

(also, if you do go look at the complaints: know that there's a hell of a lot of homophobic, transphobic, and incredibly racist content documented, as well as significant sexual harassment. read with care.)

Thinking about junk heirlooms.

I don't mean family heirlooms that feel like junk but that you can't get rid of because they're important. I mean the opposite -- things of no importance that were passed down through generations incidentally.

My grandmother owned a dish towel with a distinct checkerboard pattern. It wasn't important to her, just one of many dish towels. When she died my parents kept some of her stuff because of sentimental value, but some just because it was perfectly fine stuff they could use, and they ended up with it.

Years later I was moving to another state and my parents asked if I needed any old towels since they were getting new ones. I got a box of rags, which included my grandmother's dish towel (which had been downgraded to 'rag' by then, tbh it was in that category even when my grandmother owned it.) I literally have a rag that's been passed down through multiple generations.

It's not sentimental or anything, I still use it as a rag, but sometimes I look at it and picture it on the handle of my grandmother's oven door and feel shrimp emotions.

I want to tell a story to the artists and would-be artists out there.

When I was 19, I made a large oil painting of the nerd I would eventually marry. I poured all my attention and care into this painting. It's the only art I have from back then that still holds up as a work I'm proud of today.

I entered it into a judged show at the local art center. It got an honorable mention. I went to see the show with my beloved model. One of the judges came up to talk to me, and highlighted that all the judges really liked the painting. It would have placed, except, you see, the feet were incorrect. They were too wide and short, and if I just studied a bit more anatomy-

I called over my future wife, and asked her to take off her shoe. Being already very used to humoring me, she did. The judge looked at her very short, very wide little foot. Exactly as I'd lovingly rendered it. I would never edit her appearance in any way.

The judge looked me in the eye, and to his credit, he really looked like he meant it when he said "Oh I'm so sorry."

Anyways the moral of the story is that all of those anatomy books that teach you proportions are either showing you averages, or a very specific idea of an idealized body. Actual bodies are much more varied than that.

So don't forget to draw from observation, and remember that humans aren't mass produced mannequins. Delight in our variation. Because it's supposed to be there.

how does one go about choosing what kind of onion they want to use? i'm at that stage of cooking where i feel comfortable freehanding stuff but i don't have a decision process for white/yellow/red onion beyond what's already in my fridge, lol.

Yellow Onion: Good all-around, general use onion. Good for Caramelizing, and just about any onion need.

Sweet Onions (Vidalia): A particularly mild version of a yellow onion, grown around Vidalia, Georgia. Crunchy and sweet! Walla Walla is another brand of sweet onion, grown in Washington, USA. Can be eaten like an apple tbh. REALLY GOOD for people who are sensitive to the strong flavor of onion.

White Onion: A little sweeter and milder than the yellow onion, but not as sweet as a sweet onion. Good for dicing and serving raw if you don't have red onion. Yellow and White onions are pretty much interchangeable.

Red Onion: Great Raw! Have a bit of spice to them, and make a very interesting savory flavor when cooked. (Red onion skins can be made into a dye!)

Green Onions/Scallions: Immature onions with white bottoms and green tops. Usually diced/sliced and used raw as a garnish or a mild raw onion flavor. Can be used to replace raw onion in bulk for a milder alternative.

Chives: Tinier, punchier alternative to green onions/scallions. While in the same Allium family as the rest of these, they never get bigger than their little grassy figure. Teeeeny tiny! Great for adorable garnishes and just a hint of onion in a salad. Not good for cooking with, they get bitter fast.

Shallots: Garlicky! Kinda a halfway point between 'onion' and 'garlic'. They stay small when fully matured, and have quite a bite when used raw. Cooked, they become mellow and have a less-intense garlic-onion flavor. Often used in sauces where you want a little onion and garlic flavor, but subtly. They're REALLY good roasted.

Leek: Basically like a giant green onion, except they're always like that. Can be used in place of Onion in nearly any recipe that doesn't require caramelization. Fun slice shape! Gentle onion flavor without a lot of bite. Best when cooked, not raw imo.

Kurrat (Egyptian Leek): Like a stronger, punchier version of the leek. Excellent roasted, sauteed, used in soups - very strong flavor and KEEPS its flavor, so its usually used in smaller quantities than other alliums.
