Viktor Antonov, art designer of Dishonored 1 & 2, has passed.
His designs were fundamental to the world of Dishonored 1 & 2, he brought such a unique flare to the environments he designed that truly made them come alive in such a unique way. I personally was such a fan of his work on this series as one dear to my heart, let alone the series he is even more well known for, Half-Life 2. I cannot express enough how sad I am to hear of his passing. He had such a truly unique vision and style to his work that made him one of the greatest artists of this generation.
Thank you for your amazing work, Viktor, and all the best to his friends and family, please know his work was so deeply appreciated and adored!
THE SIMS 3 STORE PRE-INSTALLED
Today marks 25 years of The Sims. Since EA forgot TS3 exists, Iām releasing the entire The Sims 3 Store as an Anniversary Gift. It's all pre-installed and works flawlessly!
It comes with all available fixes and collection folders Iāve personally created for every set. You'll get over 5000 new Buy/Build and CAS items, 11 new worlds, and tons of new gameplay!
INSTRUCTIONS
Go to "Documents/Electronic Arts" and rename the "The Sims 3" folder (or move it).
Create a new folder and name it "The Sims 3" (or whatever the name is in your language).
Extract the contents of the ZIP file in "The Sims 3." Now launch the game.
You'll have to adjust your setting again. Don't forget to disable the in-game Store so you don't get duplicates.
Quit the game. Copy the "Saves" folder from the folder you have previously renamed. You can also copy your Mods and CC in package format.
CAUTION
Never copy over or overwrite the DCCache folder.
If you have content installed through the Launcher (Sims3Pack), you'll have to reinstall it.
I strongly recommend you don't install things through the Launcher from now. It already has a lot of content and it is a known fact the Launcher becomes more and more unstable the more content it has to handle.
Since the entire Store has been decrapified, if you want to install lots or world that contain Store content, you'll have to decrapify those too using MATY's TS3 Recompressor.
If you encounter any issues, feel free to reach out to me. I've put a lot of effort into making the installation process as smooth and straightforward as possible. Dag Dag!

Impressive work! Couldn't not reblog
someone wrote a pretty long and detailed technical overview of the differences between the old sims 1 and sims 1 legacy collection if someone's interested

i thought my laptop was on its last leg because it was running at six billion degrees and using 100% disk space at all times and then i turned off shadows and some other windows effects and it was immediately cured. i just did the same to my roommate's computer and its performance issues were also immediately cured. okay. i guess.
so i guess if you have creaky freezy windows 10/11 try searching "advanced system settings", go to performance settings, and uncheck "show shadows under windows" and anything else you don't want. hope that helps someone else.
hey this is apparently helping a lot of people! adding that on top of this you can also go to settings > personalization > colors and turn off transparency to also boost performance. this wasn't the Big Fix for me but might as well do that too if you're trying to optimize.
past a certain note threshold on tumblr posts you unlock a bloodborne-esque insight and the strange lives of this site's users become visible to you

we fucking found them?
Ok I know we joke about this but I just went to the settings and first clicked "adjust for best performance" and then re-checked only 1 box:
"Smooth edges of screen fonts"
My computer was running hot before I turned everything off; the office I'm in is very warm, I could feel the heat of my CPU through the keyboard. The fans were going, not as loud as they usually get, but they were still blasting.
Y'all.
I can barely feel the warmth through the keyboard now. It's been like 2 minutes. The fan is nearly silent.
Click the Windows key and start typing "System settings", and "View Advanced system settings" will pop up. Then click "Settings" under Performance:
Then you'll see this:
TURN IT ALL OFF.
I turned "Show window contents while dragging" and then turned that off again. It's up to you.
My computer is so quiet and reasonably-temperatured now and I barely notice a difference in utility, why is windows like this
maybe I can even play computer games again
The second best thing you can do for a Win10 computer is turn off whatever unnecessary services it's decided it needs to run in the background always. Some services it does need, but others are useless. Here's an article that goes into step by steps.
10AppsManager lets you uninstall bloatware. Winaero Tweaker lets you disable crap like Cortana/Copilot, ads, telemetry, internet search results when you search from the taskbar, and all kinds of other stuff, plus it gives you lots of other little options that are just nice to have (like, it can restore the old MS Paint program in place of Paint 3D). Both are totally free.
Oh, and check your startup programs in the Task Manager tab to make sure your computer isn't automatically starting eight million programs every time it boots. But I think people mostly know about that. (Unless this is me going "they only know one or two feldspars... and quartz of course.")
The first best thing you can do for a Windows computer is install Linux Mint. But some of us do need a few pesky Windows-specific programs. Bleh. Still, if you're up for a project, you can have both (and it's awesome). Here's an article about setting up a dual boot Windows/Mint system.
Hey everyone, I know it's going to be a busy day for a lot of people, but Google enrolled everyone over 18 into their AI program automatically.
If you have a google account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off.
Then you need to go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and turn off all Gemini activity tracking. You do have to do them in that order to make sure it works.
Honestly, I'm not sure how long this will last, but this should keep Gemini off your projects for a bit.
I saw this over on bluesky and figured it would be good to spread on here. It only takes a few minutes to do.
Writers: It's asking to read your Google Docs and be able to 'summarize' things from them and such things. I just turned all mine off.
Because this isn't mentioned above, also go to google.com/drive/settings and turn off all the annoying bits that interface directly with docs there.
This is all in the "privacy" tab of your settings. How fun that everything is hidden two layers deep. š This DOESN'T get rid of the stupid little star constantly asking you to use it, unfortunately, but that's what the picker in ublock is for. š
More detail instructions for OP's post for those who are confused. This is done from the browser on my laptop, I don't know what they look like on phones.
When you click the first link gemini.google.com/extensions, you need to click on the setting icon at the bottom, then choose "Extension", like this:
Scroll down a bit, you will see the options, turn them all off.
Then, you click on the second link myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, you'll see it tells you that it's already "turn off". NO! IT'S NOT! You have to click on that "Turn off" option, it'll drop down a menu like this:
Turn that thing off. Until that button shows you have to click to turn it back on like this:
And then, click on the delete button down there too, even if it says there's nothing to delete, just do it as a caution.
After you's done with those two. You go to your Drive, find the Setting button.
Click on the "Privacy" tab, choose the button "Manage Workspace smart feature setting"
Tick both of those off, then click Save. Or if you still want to use Google AI assistant for some reasons, please read the fine lines very very carefully.
Only then, you can feel safe enough with this force AI assistant bullshit. FOR NOW 𤔠All these steps still can't get rid of that Gemini blinkblink icon though >:(((((
Repeat for every one of your google accounts š

Please don't use the Patreon app on any iPhone. Apple is charging Patreon users an additional 30% fee.
Patreon is the main source of income for many creators and not everyone can afford an extra 30% on top of what they're already paying.
This is 100% corporate greed and it hurts all of us. If you can avoid using the iPhone Patreon please do so.
Hank Green made a video about this kind of thing! But yes, the TL;DW is subscribe to stuff using a browser if at all possible! Otherwise either you or the creator/company you're subscribing to is getting screwed over.
hey what the fuck
to stress: this is true about EVERYTHING you subscribe to via an app on your iphone or ipad
Remember, you can use the browser version of a site on your phone too. Use that instead of the app

that article going around abt firefox's new ad program is annoying bc it's phrased as though "mozilla has finally TURNED on its people and is SELLING YOU OUT for cold hard cash!!" when. that's not what's happening. it is specifically being implemented to discourage tracking behavior, and literally all the data they are giving to advertisers is aggregate and anonymized, which is like, the opposite of what that post wants you to worry about, lol
summary for those lacking energy/means to read the linked page:
firefox has very strong anti-tracking protections
advertisers keep trying to find ways around those protections
instead of wasting time and resources fighting all the ways these problems pop up, firefox is trying to remove the need for advertisers to track you at all
if you have this setting on, and you click on an ad (it's only when you click on an ad and interact with the ad's website - it's not counting misclicks), firefox will make a note of it (this is only stored in your browser, firefox is not selling this part)
firefox then encrypts all that data so it can't be traced back to you, before sending those notes to people who count them up
the advertisers will then periodically receive a report that says "hey, x amount of people clicked on your ad in this time frame. you can use this data to decide if this is the right place to put your ad"
hopefully this will get the advertisers the information they want without having to tell them anything about your specific browser history
if this still makes you uncomfortable, the way to opt out is very easy (go to settings -> privacy and security -> web advertising preferences, and uncheck all the boxes)
firefox is out here fighting the good fight guys. they're the only browser that even slightly manages to stand up to chromium, but it's a losing battle - spreading misinfo is just trying to sink the ship
Shopping for laptops fucking sucks ācause I donāt know shit about computers. Iāve never had a computer with a functional webcam or microphone or the ability to play computer games made later than 2005 or a speaker that could play anything loud enough to hear from more than a foot away. How the hell should I know what I want?!
wow that would be such useful advice if only desktop PCs were small and portable and did not require desk tops on which to place them and I could take them with me when I traveled
I know this is a haha funny post, but for anyone who needs it, here's a quick-and-dirty of what you're most likely going to see while shopping for a computer/laptop (w/Examples)!
Cores/Intel Cores (Ex. i3, i5, i9)= Processing Speed= how fast your internet and other programs run. More cores is better.
Hard [Disk] Drive(HDD)/Solid State Drive(SSD) (Ex. 250GB, 480GB, 2TB)= How much you can store on your computer (files and apps and programs). A Terabyte(TB) is 1,000 Gigabytes.
*HDD is cheaper and more storage while SSD is faster, more durable, and uses less energy.
Memory/RAM(Random Access Memory) (Ex. 4GB, 8GB, 16GB) = How many different things your computer can do At The Same Time.
Ex. A computer with 4GB of RAM will probably shit itself if you try to play a game with with the internet open.
Video/Graphics Cards (Ex. NVIDIA, Intel HD Graphics, AMD) = How much visual complexity your computer can handle without throwing a tantrum. Only important if you play video games, do digital art, or watch a lot of movies on your computer. (When you're watching a video and it pixelates and lags when the action stuff happens, that's a bad/small graphics card)
Also theĀ āavoid refurbished computersā tip is dead wrong.
āRefurbishedā means itās been in a technicianās hands recently and canāt be sold as new. Thatās it. Thatās all. In the US the FTC makes it illegal to sell something new if itās been sold to an end user, so by definition a lot of perfect, ready-to-go hardware must beĀ ārefurbishedā in order to sell it again, no matter the circumstances.
Reasons a machine might be a refurb:
- Customer bought the item, decided they didnāt like the color, and returned it
- Customer bought the item, couldnāt figure out how to turn it on, and returned it
- Retailer opened the box for some reason and lost some of what gets shipped inside (manuals, cables, charger) and returned it
- Company bought 100 computers but went out of business before they could be installed or used
- Customer got a replacement for a damaged computer under warranty, and the manufacturer fixed what was wrong with the old machine and is now selling it as a refurb
I HAVE PERSONALLY WITNESSED ALL OF THESE SCENARIOS
Bottom line: ārefurbishedā hardware has been repaired, tested, cleaned, and renewed back to original specifications by a trained technician. If anything, itās probably MORE reliable now that itās been doubly-tested.Ā
All responsibly refurbished equipment comes with a factory warranty... the only refurbs I would avoid are items sold āas-isā without warranty. Thatās dangerous unless you know what youāre doing, like buying stuff for parts.
A lot of my most reliable hardware -- servers, laptops, tablets -- were bought as refurbished goods at huge savings. When I go shopping for a new thing I always look at the refurbished options first.Ā
tl;dr: Refurbished is great!
This helped me recently and you might need it as well :)
