On August 5th 2017 about 150 activists occupied a bridge at Amsterdam to drop four banners to protest the commercialisation of pride and the participation of racist and imperialust boats. Statement by the group:

Reclaiming Pride

The 5th of August is that time of the year again: the boat parade of Canal Pride in Amsterdam. COC but also VVD, PVDA, the Police, ING, Rabobank, Google and Uber apear in rainbow boats this year. Where Pride once began as a movement that fought for freedom, these days it has grown into a party about commerce and money. Pride involves the participation of corporations and political parties that represent arms trade, the Dakota Access Pipeline, the war over natural resources, the ethnic profiling and using racism to win votes.

We also see how LGBTQI+ rights are being used for a racist, populist, and far right smear campaign against muslims and refugees. They are said to threaten ‘our values’. But the Netherlands isn’t really that ‘tolerant’ and many white people discriminate on the basis of sexuality and gender identity. Like many other people who are fleeing poverty or war, LGBTQI+ refugees are mercilessly being deported.

We stand up against our rights being hijacked and used for racist political arguments and homonationalism. We want the Pride to be ours again, instead of a commercial party. We want our Pride to be intersectional, to connect the struggle against discrimination on the basis of sexuality and gender identity to the struggle against racism, sexism, class and other formsof exclusion. We cannot celebrate the freedom of one group at the expense of the freedom of other groups

That is why on this day we reclaim our Pride and bring it back to the fight for our liberation. This is why we gather―in all our diversity―on a big bridge, during the Canal Parade on August 5th, to show what the LGBTQI+ fight is about: radical liberation. Stop the scapegoat politics! Reclaiming the pride!

I made the comparison because furries get more shit for being furries than aces get for being aces, but furries don’t try to say we’re oppressed for being furries. I wasn’t even comparing being ace and being a furry - I was comparing how people treat aces and how people treat furries.

The whole point was to say that if aces were oppressed, furries would be, which they aren’t. It’s just an example to show that. I don’t understand fully the problem, because things are compared to other things frequently even cross-categorically. And especially when I’m comparing two groups who aren’t systematically oppressed, I don’t understand what the problem is.

My main question is mostly: if furries aren’t oppressed, how are aces oppressed?

I don’t know exactly how to explain it to you, it seems kinda obvious to me not to compare someone’s orientation (intimate, not a choice) to something you basically to choose to get invested in and practice. I won’t discuss oppression since I think it’s a complicated issue and I haven’t set my opinion about it. But my experiences as a non straight person being compared to someone having uuh…non conventional hobbies is not something I appreciate?

The basis is basically that there’s more discrimination towards furries for being furries than there is to aces for being aces, and because furries face more discrimination, if aces were oppressed, it would make furries oppressed because they experience more discrimination.

I’ve figured out why this pisses me off so much. You’re parroting the same shit that conservative bigots have been hurling at gay and m-spec people for decades. Like… this is the small-white-conservative-LNP-safe-seat-town “we must protect the children” brand homophobia that I grew up surrounded by.

It’s a weird mash of 3 interrelated arguments:

1. ‘your oppression is trivial-to-nonexistent and a direct consequence of your Deviant Sexual Choices™ and if it was really so bad you’d just Change Your Lifestyle to one that I approve of’ 2. ‘because you’re oppression is a result of Deviant Sexual Choices, if we acknowledge that you’re really oppressed we’d have to let the kinksters bring their fetishes into public spaces and that would be an Abomination’ 3. ‘I deem you to be the same as the kinksters, so if the kinksters can deal with us being squicked out by their kinks then you can stop being so sensitive and let us continue to oppress you’

I can’t opt out of being Ace any less than you can opt out of being Gay, and yet here you are repeating homophobic arguments verbatim.

Ok now to answer your question. Just as an example we’ve all brought up the fact that a-specs regularly face sexual abuse and corrective rape for their ace-ness, that undeniably Straight people think that we’re defective and subhuman, and multiple people have come forth saying that they’ve been kicked out for coming out as ace, which is a hell of a lot more than furries get. But then you turn around and deny our experiences and accuse of us of lying because a-specs and inclusionists are some comically evil monolith, apparently.

Hi. I’m autistic. a-spec is not and has never been an autism-specific term, that’s “The Spectrum” and it’s still a term I have full access to whatever the case may be, but we’ve argued about that too much as is, so w/e I’ll use ace/aro-spec. I won’t mention SA on posts you’ve interacted with in future, sorry, I wasn’t aware and I should have checked your blog first. Also, I wasn’t aware that furries “get gassed en masse” either, in which case if systematic execution doesn’t meet the standard of ‘oppressed enough to warrant our support’ then there’s a Big Fucking Problem because gassing people for their affiliation with a particular subculture is definitely oppression.
